Viza Stymies Manatees, Threshers Win 12th, 6-1; April 23, 2016

Tyler Viza scattered seven singles as the Clearwater Threshers defeated the Brevard County Manatees 6-1 Saturday night.  The Threshers provided Viza a five run cushion in the first inning, and he made those runs stand up as he shutout the Manatees over a season-high 6.0 innings.   Continue reading Viza Stymies Manatees, Threshers Win 12th, 6-1; April 23, 2016

Threshers Defeat Stone Crabs, 4-3; April 11, 2016

Tyler Viza made his Clearwater Threshers’ debut a memorable one with a 4-3 victory over the 2015 Florida State League Champion Charlotte Stone Crabs.  Viza (pronounced Veye-zah) threw 74 pitches in his 5.2 inning outing.  He was lifted in the sixth inning after a lead off single advanced to third on back-to-back ground outs.  Viza threw 54 strikes and allowed 4 hits, 3 runs, and 2 unearned runs.  He struck out 3 and walked none. 2016 Spring Training, March 15th

The Phillies won again today.  They beat the Rays 5-2 on the road.  Nola started and gave up both Tampa runs.  Andrew Bailey struck out the side in a 1-2-3 inning and was the pitcher of record when the Phillies took the lead.  Hector Neris followed with a one-hit inning where he also struck out the side.  Colton Murray came on to record the final out to get the save.  The Phillies are 11-4.  Dylan Cozens made his spring debut in the sixth inning in right field and went 0-1 with a BB and K.

I didn’t make the trip to Port Charlotte.  Rather, I went to the Carpenter Complex and watched David Hernandez make his first appearance since March 1st, as well as  Mark Appel and other Group One and Group Two players who took on the Blue Jays in their first Minor League spring training games.

Florida Instructional League – Game #4; 10/3/2015

Since Tuesday’s game, the Phillies have traveled to Tampa and had two camp days.  More camp days is a direct result of the Pirates decision not to schedule very many games this year.  I don’t believe they are travelling out of Bradenton at all this fall.

This morning at ten o’clock, the Phillies took the field against the Blue Jays.  Tyler Gilbert got the start.  He was followed by Edgar Garcia, Alexis Rivero, and Robert Tasin.  The top of the Phillies order was comprised of Roman Quinn, J.P. Crawford, and Domonic Brown. Cornelius Randolph batted fifth and Jhailyn Ortiz was the DH and batted seventh.  Sixteen year old Rafael Marchan also made a cameo at catcher but played the field for only half of an inning.

The Phillies received some good pitching and outscored the Jays 6-4.  Details below the fold.

Florida Instructional League – Game #2, 9/29/2015

Tuesday’s game against the Yankees provided a mixture of good, indifferent, and poor pitching with a very little bit of offense.  Starter Matt Imhof and reliever Felix Paulino both had poor outings.  Alexis Rivero and Will Stewart chipped in with satisfactory innings.  And Luke Leftwich and Kenny Koplove both pitched well.   Continue reading Florida Instructional League – Game #2, 9/29/2015

Winter Ball Round Up: Nov. 30 – Dec. 6

Updates on Phillies’ minor league players from around winter ball  during the last week –

GCL Phillies Drop 2 Games Back With 3 to Play; August 25, 2014

The Phillies lost a “must” game to the Yankees, 7-2.  Now, even if they win out, they need help from the Blue Jays to win or force a tie for the division.

Elniery Garcia started and battled with less than his best stuff.  The Yankee batters were able to sit on his fast ball and make solid contact in a lot of their at bats.  Even so, he kept the Phillies in the game and certianly deserved better defense than that played behind him today.  My line for Garcia was 4.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K.  However, I am not the official scorer and his actual line was – Continue reading GCL Phillies Drop 2 Games Back With 3 to Play; August 25, 2014
