2016 Spring Training, March 15th

The Phillies won again today.  They beat the Rays 5-2 on the road.  Nola started and gave up both Tampa runs.  Andrew Bailey struck out the side in a 1-2-3 inning and was the pitcher of record when the Phillies took the lead.  Hector Neris followed with a one-hit inning where he also struck out the side.  Colton Murray came on to record the final out to get the save.  The Phillies are 11-4.  Dylan Cozens made his spring debut in the sixth inning in right field and went 0-1 with a BB and K.

Weekend Discussion, January 29, 2016; MLB Top 100

MLB announced their top 100 prospects tonight.  Seven players from the Phillies’ organization made the list.  Since I’m sure this will generate some discussion, here are our seven top prospects and a place to discuss.

  • #5      SS, J.P. Crawford
  • #55   RHP, Jake Thompson
  • #64   OF, Nick Williams
  • #70   RHP, Mark Appel
  • #84   OF, Cornelius Randolph
  • #96   C/1B, Jorge Alfaro
  • #99   OF, Roman Quinn

Crawford still at #5.  Quinn was not ranked in 2015.  Randolph moved up one slot from #85 to #84.  The others dropped slots, some significantly – Appel from #43 to #70, Thompson from #51 to #55, Williams from #55 to #64, Alfaro from #59 to #96.

The race for the #4 prospect in the Phillies’ organization was close.  It ended with Mark Appel edging Cornelius Randolph by 12 votes.  A record 593 votes were cast.  Appel received 184 votes (31%) followed closely by Randolph who received 172 (29%).  The real surprise was that the top two vote recipients accounted for only 60% of the votes cast.
