2016 Spring Training, March 15th

The Phillies won again today.  They beat the Rays 5-2 on the road.  Nola started and gave up both Tampa runs.  Andrew Bailey struck out the side in a 1-2-3 inning and was the pitcher of record when the Phillies took the lead.  Hector Neris followed with a one-hit inning where he also struck out the side.  Colton Murray came on to record the final out to get the save.  The Phillies are 11-4.  Dylan Cozens made his spring debut in the sixth inning in right field and went 0-1 with a BB and K.

I didn’t make the trip to Port Charlotte.  Rather, I went to the Carpenter Complex and watched David Hernandez make his first appearance since March 1st, as well as  Mark Appel and other Group One and Group Two players who took on the Blue Jays in their first Minor League spring training games.

The Threshers Win the Pennant! The Threshers Win the Pennant

June 24, 2015; Clearwater, FL

Okay, it wasn’t a pennant.  But it was the Florida State League North Division’s First Half clinching game.  On June 14th, the Daytona Tortugas beat  the Tampa Yankees to raise their record to 37-26.  That same day the Clearwater Threshers beat the Brevard County Manatees to raise their record to 32-31 and remain 5 games back with 7 to play.

While Daytona was dropping a four game series on the road against the Fort Myers Miracle, the Threshers split their series with the St. Lucie Mets.  They crept back within 3 games of the Tortugas with a pivotal half-ending, three game series between the teams this week.  A series sweep by Clearwater would tie the teams for the division lead.  But the first tie-breaker was head-to-head play, and the Threshers entered the series with a 5-4 advantage. Pinto Pitches Lights Out; June 22, 2015

Ricardo Pinto won his first Advanced A last night against the division leading Daytona Tortugas.  The 21-year old began his stint with Clearwater in a high-leverage game.  The Threshers can win the division if they sweep Daytona.  Pinto was masterful through his first five innings.  He allowed a two-out, first inning single then retired 10 Tortugas in a row until a leadoff home run in the fifth.  He responded by striking out the side. Kelly Dugan Returns, Again; June 13, 2015

Even though the Threshers played a double header against the Brevard County Manatees, the big story was the return of Kelly Dugan.  He played right field in the first game and was the DH in the night cap.  He went a combined 2-7 with a BB, K, and his first HR of the season.  He hit the ball hard most at bats.  The original plan was for Dugan to play the outfield Friday and Saturday, DH on Sunday, then take stock.  Friday’s rain derailed that plan.  I expect that he’ll play the outfield Sunday.  He could return to Reading not long after that.  He looks ready.

The Threshers lost the opener.  Continue reading Kelly Dugan Returns, Again; June 13, 2015

Threshers Thrash Blue Jays; May 2, 2015

Clearwater pounded their way to an 8-2 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays Saturday night.  The Threshers collected 14 hits, 5 for extra bases, in support of Brandon Leibrandt’s one-hit, nine strike out effort over six innings.

Threshers Win on the Road in Dunedin, 2-0; April 10, 2015

The Threshers rebounded from their season opening home loss against the Dunedin Blue Jays by beating them in their own home opener.  The payback didn’t come easy as the Threshers were no-hit through 5 innings and scored their first run without benefit of a hit.  But fortunaetly they scored enough to reward David Whitehead with a win for the solid effort he produced.  Lee Ridenhour was perfect in a set-up role, and Ulises Joaquin persevered to save the victory.

The game again featured rehabbing major leaguers, Michael Saunders as DH and leadoff hitter for the Blue Jays and RF Domonic Brown batting third and playing 5 innings for the Threshers.  Neither figured in the scoring. Continue reading Threshers Win on the Road in Dunedin, 2-0; April 10, 2015

Walter Wins Again; August 23, 2014

Kevin Walter made his third start of the season and recorded his second win with 5 solid innings against the Brevard County Manatees.  The Threshers used a four run fourth inning to erase an early deficit, and the bullpen kept the Manatees at bay to post a 6-2 victory.

Brevard County is an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.  They boast 7 of the Brewers’ top 20 prospects.  Their line up includes #1 Tyrone Taylor (2012, 2nd round, 92nd overall), #2 Orlando Arcia (2010, international free agent), #9 Victor Roache (2012, 1st, 28), and #12 Michael Reed(2011, 5th, 161).  They hold down the second through fifth positins in their line up.  The Threshers’ staff held them to 4 singles in 15 at bats with a walk and 6 strike outs. Walter Completes Sweep of Lakeland; August 17, 2014

After 124 games and 37 series, the Clearwater Threshers finally swept a team in a three game series this weekend.  Thanks to some timely hitting and excellent starting pitching the Threshers have their fourth 3-game winning streak of the second half and the season.  Friday, Jordan Guth pitched 7 innings of 4-hit ball allowing 1 earned run.  Saturday, Colin Kleven pitched 6 innings of 5-hit ball allowing 2 earned runs.

Today, Kevin Walter made his second start and registered his first win of the season.  He pitched a strong game and was replaced after 5 innings.  His final line was – Continue reading Walter Completes Sweep of Lakeland; August 17, 2014

GCL, FSL, and Biddle; August 13, 2014

I attended my first GCL game in several weeks today.  Denton Keys pitched a solid 5 innings against the GCL Pirates.  He scattered 5 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batter allowing 2 runs, only one of them earned.  The defense was a little shaky all day.  The 3 errors charged were a little generous.  A couple more could have been charged.

Austin Davis and undrafted free agent Kyle Bogese combined to pitch the final 4 innings.  Davis allowed 3 hits in 2.1 innings but was aided by a pick off and a caught stealing.  Bogese got the win with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball.  Each reliever recorded 3 strikes out.  The Phillies won 3-2. Crawford Clubs Cubs; August 8, 2014

J.P. Crawford belted 2 home runs as he went 3 for 4 with a stolen base to lead the Threshers to an 8-7 victory over the Daytona Cubs.  Crawford’s 2 home runs sailed over the Oakley sign in right field for those familiar with Bright House Field.  The first cleared the back fence and left the stadium.
