The Threshers Win the Pennant! The Threshers Win the Pennant

June 24, 2015; Clearwater, FL

Okay, it wasn’t a pennant.  But it was the Florida State League North Division’s First Half clinching game.  On June 14th, the Daytona Tortugas beat  the Tampa Yankees to raise their record to 37-26.  That same day the Clearwater Threshers beat the Brevard County Manatees to raise their record to 32-31 and remain 5 games back with 7 to play.

While Daytona was dropping a four game series on the road against the Fort Myers Miracle, the Threshers split their series with the St. Lucie Mets.  They crept back within 3 games of the Tortugas with a pivotal half-ending, three game series between the teams this week.  A series sweep by Clearwater would tie the teams for the division lead.  But the first tie-breaker was head-to-head play, and the Threshers entered the series with a 5-4 advantage. Pinto Pitches Lights Out; June 22, 2015

Ricardo Pinto won his first Advanced A last night against the division leading Daytona Tortugas.  The 21-year old began his stint with Clearwater in a high-leverage game.  The Threshers can win the division if they sweep Daytona.  Pinto was masterful through his first five innings.  He allowed a two-out, first inning single then retired 10 Tortugas in a row until a leadoff home run in the fifth.  He responded by striking out the side. Kelly Dugan Returns, Again; June 13, 2015

Even though the Threshers played a double header against the Brevard County Manatees, the big story was the return of Kelly Dugan.  He played right field in the first game and was the DH in the night cap.  He went a combined 2-7 with a BB, K, and his first HR of the season.  He hit the ball hard most at bats.  The original plan was for Dugan to play the outfield Friday and Saturday, DH on Sunday, then take stock.  Friday’s rain derailed that plan.  I expect that he’ll play the outfield Sunday.  He could return to Reading not long after that.  He looks ready.

The Threshers lost the opener.  Continue reading Kelly Dugan Returns, Again; June 13, 2015

Crawford Returns, Leads Threshers to 7-3 Victory; May 6, 2015

J.P. Crawford is an impact player.  There.  If no one has said it, there it is.

The long-awaited return of J.P. Crawford ended today when he strode into the batter’s box to leadoff the home first.  The Phillies’ top prospect had been sidelined with a left oblique strain he suffered during spring training.  During the past few weeks, he had been working out at the Carpenter Complex and recently completed his rehab stint with the XST squads, when he played the field in back-to-back, nine-inning games.  Today, he was the Threshers’ designated hitter and leadoff batter. Threshers Lose Close One, 2-1; May 5, 2015

Colin Kleven battled for five innings.  His 28-pitch first inning set the tone for his night.  He only threw 14 strikes in the inning, walked an uncharacteristic 2 batters, and reached a 3-ball count on another batter.  Although the Manatees loaded the bases, Kleven was able to keep them off the board. Threshers Thrash Blue Jays; May 2, 2015

Clearwater pounded their way to an 8-2 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays Saturday night.  The Threshers collected 14 hits, 5 for extra bases, in support of Brandon Leibrandt’s one-hit, nine strike out effort over six innings.

Threshers Fall to Yankees; April 28, 2015

Clearwater lost 8-7 to the Tampa Yankees.  The Threshers couldn’t hold an early lead, but came back to tie before falling behind again.  Late runs conceded to the Yankees came back to haunt as the Threshers ninth inning rally fell short.

Leibrandt Picks off Yankees; April 21, 2015

The Threshers broke a modest 2-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Tampa Yankees.  Brandon Leibrandt picked off half of the 6 runners who reached base during his seven innings with a deceptive slide-step.  Edubray Ramos picked up his first save.  Continue reading Leibrandt Picks off Yankees; April 21, 2015

Threshers Win Again; April 18, 2015

The Threshers began the day alone in first place in the FSL North Division.  They beat the Lakeland Flying Tigers 7-3 in a regular nine inning game.  The win raised their record to 7-3 and they remained in sole possession of first place in their division.

Threshers Win on Cozens’ Walk Off; April 17, 2015

The Threshers beat the Lakeland Flying Tigers in a game that amounted to a pitching duel between their respective pitching staffs.  They won the game 4-3 on a single by Dylan Cozens in the seventeenth inning.
