During an Instructional game at Bright House this week, the conversation turned toward the catching situation in the organization. Of course, as you should expect, there were as many opinions as there were people in the discussion. This topic has been touched on in several comment threads so far. So, let’s get the discussion out in the open where we cover all the possibilities.
The above is just a suggestion for this week’s discussion. This post is reserved for the discussion of the top prospects in the Phillies’ organization. You can tout the merits of your favorite prospects, instruct us on why your ranking is superior, talk about a prospect who intrigues/worries you, ask about prospects you haven’t seen and don’t know much about, or anything at all as long as it is about the top prospects.

Okay, it wasn’t a pennant. But it was the Florida State League North Division’s First Half clinching game. On June 14th, the Daytona Tortugas beat the Tampa Yankees to raise their record to 37-26. That same day the Clearwater Threshers beat the Brevard County Manatees to raise their record to 32-31 and remain 5 games back with 7 to play.
While Daytona was dropping a four game series on the road against the Fort Myers Miracle, the Threshers split their series with the St. Lucie Mets. They crept back within 3 games of the Tortugas with a pivotal half-ending, three game series between the teams this week. A series sweep by Clearwater would tie the teams for the division lead. But the first tie-breaker was head-to-head play, and the Threshers entered the series with a 5-4 advantage. Continue reading The Threshers Win the Pennant! The Threshers Win the Pennant
Ricardo Pinto won his first Advanced A last night against the division leading Daytona Tortugas. The 21-year old began his stint with Clearwater in a high-leverage game. The Threshers can win the division if they sweep Daytona. Pinto was masterful through his first five innings. He allowed a two-out, first inning single then retired 10 Tortugas in a row until a leadoff home run in the fifth. He responded by striking out the side. The Threshers played two different games in the span of nine innings. In the first game they ran out to a 6-0 lead in four innings against the Miracle’s top prospect, RHP Kohl Stewart. Then they went dormant for four innings as the Miracle mounted a comeback that tied the game. Dylan Cozens’ walk off single in the ninth finally ended the suspense.

The Threshers played two 7-inning games against the Fort Myers Miracle on Thursday to make up for the game postponed Tuesday night. Mark Leiter pitched game one, and David Whitehead pitched the night cap. The Threshers dropped the opener 2-1. They rallied to win game two, 6-3.

The Threshers lost to division-leading Charlotte in the first game of a double header, 8-2. As I type this, water from a heavy, between games downpour is ponding in foul territory in front of the left field stands. The start of second game is in doubt.
This is probably not a bad outcome for the Threshers. Although they outhit the Stone Crabs 11-10, they still looked to be suffering the after affects of a virus that attacked the coaches and players at the end of their recently completed road trip. Some media outlets had reported that the team had contracted food poisoning, but those stories were incorrect.

Colin Kleven battled for five innings. His 28-pitch first inning set the tone for his night. He only threw 14 strikes in the inning, walked an uncharacteristic 2 batters, and reached a 3-ball count on another batter. Although the Manatees loaded the bases, Kleven was able to keep them off the board. Continue reading Threshers Lose Close One, 2-1; May 5, 2015
Clearwater pounded their way to an 8-2 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays Saturday night. The Threshers collected 14 hits, 5 for extra bases, in support of Brandon Leibrandt’s one-hit, nine strike out effort over six innings.

Clearwater lost 8-7 to the Tampa Yankees. The Threshers couldn’t hold an early lead, but came back to tie before falling behind again. Late runs conceded to the Yankees came back to haunt as the Threshers ninth inning rally fell short.

The Threshers broke a modest 2-game losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Tampa Yankees. Brandon Leibrandt picked off half of the 6 runners who reached base during his seven innings with a deceptive slide-step. Edubray Ramos picked up his first save.
