Cord Sandberg

Name: Cord Sandberg

Position: CF
Bats: L
Throws: L
DOB: 1/2/95
Height: 6′ 3″
Weight: 215

Drafted: 3rd Round (89th overall) of the 2013 draft ($775,000 signing bonus)

Career Synopsis:

Hit: The swing can get a bit long and struggles to keep the bat head in the zone.  In his debut he often looked fooled and contact was often weak.  As he gets more reps you would expect him to get more comfortable at the plate.  The Phillies will likely make adjustments to the swing to allow it better use his athleticism.  20/50

Power:  There is at least plus raw power in Sandberg’s swing, but the hit tool limitations have limited game power to this point.  Right now the power is to the pull side, but if the hit tool improves he has the raw strength to take it to all fields. 25/60

Speed:  Sandberg is a plus runner right now and has the athleticism to keep it for a while.  There is a chance has he gets much bigger and thicker and it decreases over times, but for now it an asset. 60

Glove:  Sandberg’s size and lack of elite speed make center field a tough case long term.  He does not have the eye and route running right now to overcome those limitations.  He should be able to play either OF corner, but right now shows really good routes and feel for defense in LF.  If he keeps those instincts, his athleticism should make for plus defense in a corner spot. 40/60

Arm:  Before going pro in baseball Sandberg was slated to be the quarterback at Mississippi State and so the arm strength is there.  Sandberg will show a plus accurate arm, that will be an asset in either corner spot.  60

Summary: Sandberg might have better raw tools than any player in the Phillies farm system.  He is still really raw having spent more time focusing on  football rather than baseball.  However his makeup is universally praised and he has already put work in to be committed to baseball long term.  While not a CFer long term he could be a near elite player in a corner.

  1. Just wanted to point out a funny typo- you wrote Savery instead of Sandberg right by Scouting Report.
