Drafted: Drafted in the 6th Round (218th overall) by the Phillies in the 2012 draft.

Pre Draft Report:

Perkins was drafted in the 43rd round by the Mariners in 2009 but elected to attend Purdue University.  At Purdue, Perkins was the most dangerous hitter on the team showing an aggressive approach with good power and hard contact.  Scouts question how both the swing and approach will translate to professional ball.  He is ok at third base but scouts aren’t positive he will stay there.  His likely destination would then be an OF corner.

Career Synopsis:

Perkins signed quickly, and after a 5 game stay in the GCL he went north to Williamsport where he hit .304/.352/.407 over 67 games.  The lack of power was concerning, as was his low walk rate.

In 2013 the Phillies double jumped him to Clearwater.  Perkins started out on fire but lost over a month to injury and ended the season with a .295/.346/.444 showing a good uptick in power and a small rise in walk rate.

Scouting Report: Below is an assessment of Perkins’s raw tools, rated on the traditional 20-80 scouting scale. The grades are my estimation based on what I’ve read and those I’ve talked to. The second number is a future projection, the first number is the current assessment

Summary: Perkins makes a ton of contact but he lacks the power you would expect from a corner OFer, hitting more doubles than homeruns.  Additionally the approach is not great and may be able to be exploited at higher levels.  In the field he is still adjusting to the OF and should be at least average defensively.  His arm is average meaning he could play RF but is better suited for LF long term.

Upside:

Perkins tool set is not prototypical of a starting corner OFer and the profile fits more of a second division regular.  If he can handle both corner OF positions he does profile as a good bench bat that can find ABs all over the diamond.
