Threshers Close Home Schedule With 8-2 Loss; August 28, 2014

The Threshers finished their home schedule with a loss to the Tampa Yankees that lowered their home record to 21-51.  With three road games in Lakeland this weekend they can improve on their 25-38 road record.  Tonight, Colin Kleven got the start.  The big righty has been effective this season.  He came into the game with the fourth lowest walks per 9 innings in the FSL with 29 walks in 130.2 innings for a ratio of 2.0 walks per game.

The first batter Kleven faced seemed to set the pattern for his evening.  The lead off batter worked an 8-pitch at bat before lining a double to center field.  Kleven would continue to run deep counts through the first two innings.  At the conclusion of the second inning, he had already thrown 42 pitches to nine batters.  Kleven continued to battle until the Yankees got to him in the sixth inning.  His final line and pitching stats – Continue reading Threshers Close Home Schedule With 8-2 Loss; August 28, 2014

Nunez Pitching Gem Wasted; August 24, 2014

Miguel Nunez Faced the Brevard County Manatees Sunday afternoon and pitched one heck of a game.  He threw a season high 8 innings, and 67% strikes before leaving with a 2-1 lead.  The bullpen failed to hold on and a ninth inning rally fell short as the Threshers dropped a heart breaker 5-4.

Nunez got offensive support on solo home runs by J.P. Crawford and Art Charles.  Crawford came through again in the ninth but it wasn’t enough. Continue reading Nunez Pitching Gem Wasted; August 24, 2014

GCL, FSL, and Biddle; August 13, 2014

I attended my first GCL game in several weeks today.  Denton Keys pitched a solid 5 innings against the GCL Pirates.  He scattered 5 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batter allowing 2 runs, only one of them earned.  The defense was a little shaky all day.  The 3 errors charged were a little generous.  A couple more could have been charged.

Austin Davis and undrafted free agent Kyle Bogese combined to pitch the final 4 innings.  Davis allowed 3 hits in 2.1 innings but was aided by a pick off and a caught stealing.  Bogese got the win with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball.  Each reliever recorded 3 strikes out.  The Phillies won 3-2. Nunez Stifles Cubs, Threshers Lose, Yada Yada, Biddle; August 5, 2014

Miguel Nunez pitched another gem tonight, and the Threshers lost 3-1.  Nunez faced a Daytona line up that featured 3 through 6 hitters – Kyle Schwarber (#4 overall in 2014), Dan Vogelbach, Rock Shoulders, and Bill McKinney (#24 overall in 2013).  They are all built like blocks of granite and all bat left-handed.  Vogelbach and Shoulders have combined for 27 home runs in the FSL this year.  Nunez’ line was – Continue reading Nunez Stifles Cubs, Threshers Lose, Yada Yada, Biddle; August 5, 2014

Threshers; June 3, 2014

There were a few more roster moves before tonight’s game.

  • Herlis Rodriguez assigned to XST.
  • Justin Parr assigned to Clearwater from XST.
  • Shawn Camp promoted to Lehigh Valley.
  • Pete Lavin promoted to Reading.
  • Anthony Hewitt assigned to Clearwater from Reading.

I don’t know what is normal for an affiliate, but the Threshers have 86 transactions.  By comparison, the Bradenton Marauders pre-game fact sheet lists 25 as of June 1st.  So, 86 seems a little high to me.  And there should be more in the next couple weeks if signed draft picks are assigned, if anyone is promoted from Lakewood, if anymore are demoted from Reading, and if anyone is released to make room for signed draft picks.
