More on the FIL Roster: 9/17/2014

Just a few observations and answers about the Instructional League Roster.  It’s a little easier to address the questions that arose in yesterday’s thread here than after each comment.

A lot of the players you guys noted were missing attended the Instructs last year and maybe the year before, guys like – Anderson, Keys, Rivero, Viza, Rios, Posso, Canelo, Green, Greene, Pujols, Tocci were all included in the 2013 Instructs. I think Mecias, Cuicas, Marte, Hiciano, Tromp were included in 2012. Continue reading More on the FIL Roster: 9/17/2014 →

Phillies Instructional League Roster as of September 16, 2014

The Phillies have determined their roster for the 2014 Instructional League (FIL).  I apologize for the appearance, I just did a basic block and copy and haven’t ruined the integrity of the file, yet.  If you would like a copy, e-mail me at jimpeyton19@yahoo.com and I will forawrd a copy.  It is still in its original Excel format.

There are a couple of surprise attendees. Guys I didn’t expect to see, like J.P. Crawford. And guys I’m looking forward to seeing, like Jesus Alastre. I can’t wait to start covering the Instructs.

The first game is this coming Saturday morning. I have an updated schedule, too. If you would like a copy, e-mail me at the address above. I’ll get copies out tonight or tomorrow. I have an important lunch meeting at the Brown Boxer today. Yeah, meeting sounds more official than happy hour lunch. Continue reading Phillies Instructional League Roster as of September 16, 2014 →

Two Prospect Lists to Mull Over

About a week ago, Mike Drago, of the Reading Eagle, posted a prospect list that he compiled from the input of media members who cover the Phillies and their minor league affiliates.  I was honored to be included in Mike’s request of about 2 dozen writers.  We were asked to –

  • Rank the top players in the Phillies organization from No. 1 to No. 20, based on their present value to the organization and their major league ceiling/potential.
  • Consider the player’s age and performance relative to each level he has played.
  • Not include players who are no longer with the organization, nor players who appear to be in the majors for the long haul or have had significant big league time (example: Ken Giles, Mario Hollands, David Buchanan, Darin Ruf, Freddy Galvis or Cesar Hernandez).
  • Consider players who appear to be up for a brief time and/or who are likely to begin next season in the minor leagues (Cameon Rupp, Ethan Martin.).

The following is the 2014 Phillies prospect list as published in the Reading Eagle.  Players are listed with their position and current club. Continue reading Two Prospect Lists to Mull Over →

Threshers Close Home Schedule With 8-2 Loss; August 28, 2014

The Threshers finished their home schedule with a loss to the Tampa Yankees that lowered their home record to 21-51.  With three road games in Lakeland this weekend they can improve on their 25-38 road record.  Tonight, Colin Kleven got the start.  The big righty has been effective this season.  He came into the game with the fourth lowest walks per 9 innings in the FSL with 29 walks in 130.2 innings for a ratio of 2.0 walks per game.

The first batter Kleven faced seemed to set the pattern for his evening.  The lead off batter worked an 8-pitch at bat before lining a double to center field.  Kleven would continue to run deep counts through the first two innings.  At the conclusion of the second inning, he had already thrown 42 pitches to nine batters.  Kleven continued to battle until the Yankees got to him in the sixth inning.  His final line and pitching stats – Continue reading Threshers Close Home Schedule With 8-2 Loss; August 28, 2014 →

Phillies Close GCL Season With 3 Wins; August 28, 2014

The Phillies won their final three games, one against the Yankees1 team and two against the Pirates, but fell short on their goal of winning the division.  Today, Franklyn Kilome gave up a home run on the second pitch of the game then shut down the Pirates for five innings.  Tanner Kiest, Gregorio Santos, and Seranthony Dominguez each pitched a scoreless inning of relief before undrafted free agent Kyle Bogese added some drama in the ninth.  Jared Fisher came on to nail down his third save of the season in the 5-2 victory. GCL Phillies Drop 2 Games Back With 3 to Play; August 25, 2014

The Phillies lost a “must” game to the Yankees, 7-2.  Now, even if they win out, they need help from the Blue Jays to win or force a tie for the division.

Elniery Garcia started and battled with less than his best stuff.  The Yankee batters were able to sit on his fast ball and make solid contact in a lot of their at bats.  Even so, he kept the Phillies in the game and certianly deserved better defense than that played behind him today.  My line for Garcia was 4.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K.  However, I am not the official scorer and his actual line was – Continue reading GCL Phillies Drop 2 Games Back With 3 to Play; August 25, 2014 →

Nunez Pitching Gem Wasted; August 24, 2014

Miguel Nunez Faced the Brevard County Manatees Sunday afternoon and pitched one heck of a game.  He threw a season high 8 innings, and 67% strikes before leaving with a 2-1 lead.  The bullpen failed to hold on and a ninth inning rally fell short as the Threshers dropped a heart breaker 5-4.

Nunez got offensive support on solo home runs by J.P. Crawford and Art Charles.  Crawford came through again in the ninth but it wasn’t enough. Continue reading Nunez Pitching Gem Wasted; August 24, 2014 →

Walter Wins Again; August 23, 2014

Kevin Walter made his third start of the season and recorded his second win with 5 solid innings against the Brevard County Manatees.  The Threshers used a four run fourth inning to erase an early deficit, and the bullpen kept the Manatees at bay to post a 6-2 victory.

Brevard County is an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.  They boast 7 of the Brewers’ top 20 prospects.  Their line up includes #1 Tyrone Taylor (2012, 2nd round, 92nd overall), #2 Orlando Arcia (2010, international free agent), #9 Victor Roache (2012, 1st, 28), and #12 Michael Reed(2011, 5th, 161).  They hold down the second through fifth positins in their line up.  The Threshers’ staff held them to 4 singles in 15 at bats with a walk and 6 strike outs. Phillies Pull Within One Game of Yankees1; August 23, 2014

The Phillies came from behind to beat the Blue Jays 2-1.  They pushed across a run in the eighth inning to gain a tie, and scored the walk off win with another run in the ninth inning.  The game featured excellent pitching by both teams.

Lewis Alezones started for the Phillies and logged six innings of 2-hit ball.  Austin Davis chipped in two inning of 1-hit ball.  Jared Fisher threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning and picked up the win. Continue reading Phillies Pull Within One Game of Yankees1; August 23, 2014 →

… And Threshers Can’t Overcome 6-0 Second Inning Deficit; August 22, 2014

The Threshers followed up their come-from-ahead first game loss to the Brevard County Manatees with a 7-2 loss in the second game of the double header.  They continued their passive offensive ways with 4 hits in the night cap.  Newcomer Jesmuel Valentin was replaced by Angelo Mora in the second game.

Jeb Stefan was touched for a run in the first inning.  He allowed the first 5 batters to reach base in the second inning on the way to giving up another 5 runs.  He settled down after that and retired 13 consecutive batters before surrendering a solo home run in the sixth inning.  His final line was – Continue reading … And Threshers Can’t Overcome 6-0 Second Inning Deficit; August 22, 2014 →
