2016 Spring Training, March 18th

The Phillies lost their St. Patrick’s Day game against the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-1.  But the offense returned Friday with a 15-12 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.  The Phillies fell behind 5-0, scored 9 runs in the 4th inning, 6 more in the 5th , and allowed 7 runs over the final 3 innings.  Maikel Franco hit his 7th HR, Peter Bourjos hit his 1st, Ryan Howard blasted his second, a grand slam, over the batter’s eye in center, and Cameron Rupp hit his third.  The Phillies opted to play without a DH and starter Charlie Morton went 0-2 with an RBI and a run scored.  Luis Garcia struck out 3 in 1.1 IP.  The Pirates only brought 2 starters – RF Polanco and C Cervelli.  Freese made the trip as a DH.

Lots of stuff going on today at Bright House, the Carpenter Complex, and on the transaction wire.   Continue reading 2016 Spring Training, March 18th

2016 Spring Training, March 16th

The Phillies were scheduled off today as they prepare for their big St. Patrick’s Day game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Two Class A groups faced the Pirates Class A teams at the Carpenter Complex.  I don’t have much velocity to report or game action for that matter.  But I have a lot of video. Continue reading 2016 Spring Training, March 16th

2016 Spring Training, March 15th

The Phillies won again today.  They beat the Rays 5-2 on the road.  Nola started and gave up both Tampa runs.  Andrew Bailey struck out the side in a 1-2-3 inning and was the pitcher of record when the Phillies took the lead.  Hector Neris followed with a one-hit inning where he also struck out the side.  Colton Murray came on to record the final out to get the save.  The Phillies are 11-4.  Dylan Cozens made his spring debut in the sixth inning in right field and went 0-1 with a BB and K.

I didn’t make the trip to Port Charlotte.  Rather, I went to the Carpenter Complex and watched David Hernandez make his first appearance since March 1st, as well as  Mark Appel and other Group One and Group Two players who took on the Blue Jays in their first Minor League spring training games.

2016 Spring Training, March 12th

Saturday, the Phillies beat R.A. Dickey and most of the Blue Jays starting line up 8-5.  Vince Velasquez pitched four, 2-run innings;  and David Lough, J.P. Arencibia, and Nick Williams hit home runs leading a 14-hit attack.  Yoervis Medina struck out the side in the ninth.  The Phillies are 9-3 and have the second best record in the Grapefruit League.

Over at the Complex, a drama that will go a long way to determining the success of the Phillies’ regular season was held.  It drew at least six coaches as spectators, as well as Matt Klentak and Joe Jordan.  Jerad Eickhoff threw to live hitters for the first time since suffering a thumb injury before spring training started.  I don’t think it went well.

2016 Spring Training, March 11th

Thursday, the Phillies traveled to central Florida and whipped the Atlanta Braves 9-2, pushing their spring record to 8-3-2. Former Phillies Michael Bourn and Kyle Kendrick started for Atlanta.  Bourn went 1-3.  He fared better than Kendrick who faced 16 batters in 1.2 innings and allowed 7 ER on 9 hits and 2 walks.  The Phillies put up double digit hits again (16).  Ryan Howard returned from an illness and recorded his first spring base hit. Roman Quinn posted his third triple in 18 at bats.  Meanwhile, back at the Complex in Clearwater, the Phillies held two more intrasquad games at minor league camp. 2016 Spring Training, March 8-10

I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at Bright House watching the Phillies beat Pittsburgh and Baltimore.  They are 7-3 with 2 ties (against Toronto and Detroit).  They also have 2 wins against the Yankees and a second win over the Pirates.  Time to upgrade those win predictions for 2016!
