Instructional League games don’t begin until next week. However, I stopped by the Carpenter Complex to pick up some papers they were holding for me. And to my boundless joy, there were ball players on three of the fields taking batting practice. As I approached the offices, I could hear the distinctive pop of pitchers’ offerings landing in catchers’ gloves on the “Seven Mounds” behind the Complex . You would think that after five-plus months of games I would be “baseball-ed” out. But, to be honest, attending the Instructional games and work outs s are among my favorite times down here. Jesse Biddle Pitches in the Florida Instructional League; 10/10/2014
Friday morning’s game signaled the end of the Phillies’ 2014 instructional league season. A few players may move on to their winter league teams, most will return home and continue working out until they return to Clearwater to participate in spring training for the 2015 season.
The Phillies were taking on the Blue Jays from neighboring Dunedin. Attendance was a little higher this morning than it had been all week. We were ready to watch as many as nine pitchers take the mound for each team as they prepared to break for the winter. I don’t think any of us had the slightest inkling that Jesse Biddle would be taking the mound and that he would pitch two innings. Florida Instructional League; Intrasquad Game – 10/8/2014
Well, the Instructional League is winding down. Only a couple of scouts were on hand for the final intrasquad game on Wednesday. Two Phillies’ teams played six innings to a 2-1 conclusion. I don’t have velocities and didn’t bother to count pitches. Instead, here are a few observations. Continue reading Florida Instructional League; Intrasquad Game – 10/8/2014
Florida Instructional League Game #12; 10/6/2014
Monday afternoon, the Phillies played the Blue Jays at Bright House Field. The weather was as comfortable as we’ve seen down here in a while, and the game was among the best pitched so far this fall. The Phillies came back to win 2-1. The line up/box score/write up – Continue reading Florida Instructional League Game #12; 10/6/2014
Florida Instructional League Game #10; 10/3/2014
The Phillies’ game at the Englebert Complex was moved to the Blue Jays’ Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. The change in venue must have been unsettling as the Phillies lost 5-0 to the Blue Jays on Friday. The line up/box score – Continue reading Florida Instructional League Game #10; 10/3/2014

Florida Instructional League, Intrasquad Game – 10/1/2014
We’re at the tail end of the rainy season in Florida. Tuesday’s game was played at an earlier time and over before I got to the stadium. Today’s intrasquad game started at 1:00pm. Phils1 played Phils2. The game was called after 6 innings. Phils 2 made up an early 3-0 deficit to win 10-3. The pitching was a little sketchy, but some of the guys threw well. Ismael Cabrera started for Phils2 and Carlos Indriago started for Phils1. Each threw 2 innings. Continue reading Florida Instructional League, Intrasquad Game – 10/1/2014
Florida Instructional League Game #6; 9/27/2014
The Phillies and Orioles faced off in an Instructional League game this morning. It ended in a 1-1 tie after nine innings. The Orioles managed 2 hits, one an infield single, and scored an unearned run on a hit batsman, error catching a pickoff throw, and another error on a throw to try and get the runner at third. The Phillies amassed 4 hits, one an infield single, and scored their run on an Andrew Knapp ground out after Williams Astudillo singled to right and moved to third on a passed ball and a balk. Florida Instructional League – Adam Morgan Edition; 9/24/2014
In Florida, Wednesday is Camp Day. After morning workouts, the players head over to Bright House Field for an intrasquad game. Today, a little past 12:30pm, Adam Morgan started a game for the first time since he was shut down in 2013.
Intrasquad games are a pain to score. The line ups are fluid, innings can start with runners on base, innings can last more or less than 3 outs, and there are double the number of pitchers to chart. I can provide a lot of detail on Morgan and some sketchy highlights on the rest of the game. Continue reading Florida Instructional League – Adam Morgan Edition; 9/24/2014
Phillies Instructional League Game #3; 9/23/2014
Monday’s game at the Blue Jays’ Englebert Complex was moved up 10:00am to beat the weather. Unfortunately, I was unaware of the change and missed the game. Tuesday’s game against the Yankees at Bright House Field was played at the scheduled time. It’s not about the result, but the Phillies did win 5-1.
