2011 Draft Recap and Analysis

Another year, another draft in the books. In years past, I simply compiled a list of the picks on their own page, and then wrote a really long piece giving my opinions on every pick. This year, I did day by day analysis, but in addition to that, I created a much expanded draft picks register. Please see the links below for all of the content. You can also find all of this information at the top of the site under the “Draft” sub-heading. When the dropdown pops up, select “2011 Draft Picks”

Previews: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4

Day by day analysis: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3

Hot or Not 10 June 2011

Some obvious talking points: A horrible week for the Lakewood rotation, Vance Worley is back where he needs to be, nice work by the top of the organization in the ‘pen, and Joe Savery slumping.

Hot Starting Pitchers: Vance Worley (2W, 13IP 5H 0ER 2BB 15K); Brian Gordon (W, 6IP 3H 0ER 1BB 11K); RYan Edell (W, 13.2IP 10H 2ER 0BB 10K); Trevor May (5IP 4H 1ER 4BB 7K).

Not Hot Starters: Ryan Feireabend (3IP 9H 8 ER 2BB 3K); Mario Hollands (2.2IP 10H 7ER 2BB 1K); Ervis Manzanillo (2IP 4H 5ER 2BB 3K); Garrett CLaypool (3.2IP 7H 7ER 2BB 4K); Nate Bump (10IP 14H 11ER 3BB 5K); David Buchanan (3IP 6H 5ER 3BB 4K); Josh Zeid (4.1IP 5H 5ER 3BB 4K) Continue reading Hot or Not 10 June 2011

Around the System–Corner Infielders

A month has passed since we last looked at the Corner Infield, so here it goes.

2011 MLB Draft Day 3 Recap

Hey everyone. Thank you again for following along today. The draft is now complete, with 20 more guys to add to our collection. My plan is to do a brief wrapup of today’s picks, because frankly, I don’t know a whole lot about them, and then try to write up a more comprehensive review of the entire draft this weekend. In that piece I will try and figure out who is going to cost what, as well as providing more profile information and things like that. Until then, a few quick thoughts on today’s picks.

Lehigh Valley Weekly Report 08 Jun 2011

Lehigh Valley continues playing well, with a 4-2 record since the last report and remain atop the Northern Division of the International League at 36-22, five games ahead of 2nd place Scranton.  The ‘Pigs began a seven game home stand against Durham and Louisville on Tuesday, a home stand that runs through next Tuesday, before hitting the road for Pawtucket. 2011 MLB Draft Day 3

And then we came to the end. Today wraps up the draft with rounds 31-50. Some teams will call it quits before the 50th round, and some teams go right till the end. 99% of the players taken today will not make the major leagues at any point, and a lot of the guys taken today won’t sign at all. Teams generally look to fill out their short season league teams with guys today, so if they want another 2B body, they’ll take a decent college senior and patch the gaps. Teams will also focus on high school seniors with strong college commitments. Most of these guys will follow through on college, but in some cases, the kid might have a change of heart at the end of the summer, and there is a chance he can sign. The Phillies showed us this in 2008 with Jarred Cosart. More often, teams use this is as a chance to draft a high school kid they like and build some kind of relationship with them so when they are draft eligible again in 2-3 years, a foundation is in place if they want to re-draft them. With that said, check below the fold for the best names still available and then all of the Phillies picks
