Clearwater lost 8-7 to the Tampa Yankees. The Threshers couldn’t hold an early lead, but came back to tie before falling behind again. Late runs conceded to the Yankees came back to haunt as the Threshers ninth inning rally fell short.

… And Threshers Can’t Overcome 6-0 Second Inning Deficit; August 22, 2014
The Threshers followed up their come-from-ahead first game loss to the Brevard County Manatees with a 7-2 loss in the second game of the double header. They continued their passive offensive ways with 4 hits in the night cap. Newcomer Jesmuel Valentin was replaced by Angelo Mora in the second game.
Jeb Stefan was touched for a run in the first inning. He allowed the first 5 batters to reach base in the second inning on the way to giving up another 5 runs. He settled down after that and retired 13 consecutive batters before surrendering a solo home run in the sixth inning. His final line was – Continue reading … And Threshers Can’t Overcome 6-0 Second Inning Deficit; August 22, 2014
Walter Completes Sweep of Lakeland; August 17, 2014
After 124 games and 37 series, the Clearwater Threshers finally swept a team in a three game series this weekend. Thanks to some timely hitting and excellent starting pitching the Threshers have their fourth 3-game winning streak of the second half and the season. Friday, Jordan Guth pitched 7 innings of 4-hit ball allowing 1 earned run. Saturday, Colin Kleven pitched 6 innings of 5-hit ball allowing 2 earned runs.
Today, Kevin Walter made his second start and registered his first win of the season. He pitched a strong game and was replaced after 5 innings. His final line was – Continue reading Walter Completes Sweep of Lakeland; August 17, 2014
Offense Supports Kleven; August 16, 2014
Colin Kleven posted his 4th consecutive quality start, and third win among those starts, with a solid 105-pitch effort against the Lakeland Flying Tigers. The offense, which was non-existent in Kleven’s 5-hit, 1-0 loss in his last start, staked him to 6 runs Saturday night. Kleven rebounded from a couple of mistakes and left after 6 innings with a 6-2 lead. The big righty kept the Tigers’ batters off balance most of the night and the Threshers held on to win 7-5. Kleven’s final line was – Continue reading Offense Supports Kleven; August 16, 2014
GCL, FSL, and Biddle; August 13, 2014
I attended my first GCL game in several weeks today. Denton Keys pitched a solid 5 innings against the GCL Pirates. He scattered 5 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batter allowing 2 runs, only one of them earned. The defense was a little shaky all day. The 3 errors charged were a little generous. A couple more could have been charged.
Austin Davis and undrafted free agent Kyle Bogese combined to pitch the final 4 innings. Davis allowed 3 hits in 2.1 innings but was aided by a pick off and a caught stealing. Bogese got the win with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball. Each reliever recorded 3 strikes out. The Phillies won 3-2. Continue reading GCL, FSL, and Biddle; August 13, 2014
Crawford Clubs Cubs; August 8, 2014
J.P. Crawford belted 2 home runs as he went 3 for 4 with a stolen base to lead the Threshers to an 8-7 victory over the Daytona Cubs. Crawford’s 2 home runs sailed over the Oakley sign in right field for those familiar with Bright House Field. The first cleared the back fence and left the stadium. Crabs beat Threshers; July 22, 2014
The Threshers were stymied in their attempt to take the third game of the four game series against the Stone Crabs. Jeb Stuart started and did a KK impersonation, allowing 3 runs on 1 hit in the first inning. The Threshers rallied for 4 runs in the fifth inning to tie the game but Stefan and Ethan Stewart combined to surrender 3 runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Crabs held on for a 7-5 victory.
Stefan has struggled in the first inning this season. Going into his 12th start, his first inning ERA was 14.34. After tonight’s first inning he had pitched 11.2 first innings and allowed 20 earned runs, raising his first inning ERA to 15.42. He has allowed the opposing team to score first in half of his starts. Continue reading Crabs beat Threshers; July 22, 2014
