Threshers Win on Astudillo’s Walk Off; April 11, 2015

The Threshers beat the Blue Jays in a game that featured a pitching duel between their respective pitching staffs.  They won the game 2-1 on a 2-out, RBI single by Willians Astudillo in the eleventh inning.

The teams used a combined eight pitchers who scattered 18 hits and 3 walks while striking out 15 batters.  Domonic Brown was given the night off after going 0-4 with 3 Ks in the first two games of the series.  Michael Saunders started in left field and led off for the Jays and scored their only run in the first inning.

Threshers Win on the Road in Dunedin, 2-0; April 10, 2015

The Threshers rebounded from their season opening home loss against the Dunedin Blue Jays by beating them in their own home opener.  The payback didn’t come easy as the Threshers were no-hit through 5 innings and scored their first run without benefit of a hit.  But fortunaetly they scored enough to reward David Whitehead with a win for the solid effort he produced.  Lee Ridenhour was perfect in a set-up role, and Ulises Joaquin persevered to save the victory.

The game again featured rehabbing major leaguers, Michael Saunders as DH and leadoff hitter for the Blue Jays and RF Domonic Brown batting third and playing 5 innings for the Threshers.  Neither figured in the scoring. Continue reading Threshers Win on the Road in Dunedin, 2-0; April 10, 2015 →

Threshers Drop Home Opener 5-2; April 9, 2015

The Threshers opened the 2015 season with a home loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays.  The game featured two rehabbing major leaguers, Michael Saunders as DH for the Blue Jays and Domonic Brown in RF for the Threshers.  Neither figured in the scoring.

These are not the Matt Boyd/Dalton Pompey/Dwight Smith Blue Jays that were so dominant in the FSL last season.  But they have restocked with prospects Mitch Nay (#11), Dawel Lugo (#18), and Matthew Dean (#19) who each hit opposite field home runs.  Pitcher Jairo Labourt (#13) stymied the Threshers thru the first four innings before tiring in the fifth and sixth innings.  The left-handed pitcher struck out Domonic Brown swinging in his only two ABs. Florida Instructional League; Intrasquad Game – 10/8/2014

Well, the Instructional League is winding down. Only a couple of scouts were on hand for the final intrasquad game on Wednesday. Two Phillies’ teams played six innings to a 2-1 conclusion. Florida Instructional League, Intrasquad Game – 10/1/2014

We’re at the tail end of the rainy season in Florida.  Tuesday’s game was played at an earlier time and over before I got to the stadium.  Today’s intrasquad game started at 1:00pm.  Phils1 played Phils2.  The game was called after 6 innings.  Phils 2 made up an early 3-0 deficit to win 10-3.  The pitching was a little sketchy, but some of the guys threw well.  Ismael Cabrera started for Phils2 and Carlos Indriago started for Phils1.  Each threw 2 innings. Florida Instructional League – Adam Morgan Edition; 9/24/2014

In Florida, Wednesday is Camp Day. After morning workouts, the players head over to Bright House Field for an intrasquad game. Today, a little past 12:30pm, Adam Morgan started a game for the first time since he was shut down in 2013.

Intrasquad games are a pain to score. The line ups are fluid, innings can start with runners on base, innings can last more or less than 3 outs, and there are double the number of pitchers to chart. Baseball, Prospects, and an Icon; 9/20/2014

The Florida Instructional League scheduled an intrasquad game for Friday at 1:45pm. In an effort to get the game in ahead of the rainy weather, they moved the game up to 10:00am, but still had to call it by 10:30am.

The rain was so heavy that Bright House Field was unplayable for Saturday’s 10:00am game against the Yankees, and was moved to Robin Roberts Field at the Carpenter Complex.

I arrived in the bottom of the first inning after getting a flat tire on Route 19. Those of you who have been down here know that is not the best place to get a flat.
