The Phillies were on their way to another horrendous week, losing 3 of 4 to Marlins.  But, as so often happens in the baseball world, we learned why you must play the games.  The Phillies won 2 of 3 games and salvaged the week with a 3-4 record.  And, although the Cubs outscored the Phillies 21-15 on the strength of a 17-2 rout in the middle game of the set, the Phillies easily handled the Cubs in 7-1 and 6-3 victories.   They have a 48-81 record and a .372 PCT.   Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of August 27th →

The Phillies were on their way to a truly horrendous week when they halted their 6-game losing streak with back-to-back wins before leaving San Francisco.  They ended their 3-week trip around the country with a 5-13 record.  They finished the week with a 2-5 record. The Phillies had another good week going 4-2, crushing Houston after dropping the first 2 games of the series and then taking 3 games from the Braves.  They have won 4 in a row and 8 of their last 11 games.  They have a 34-64 record and a .373 PCT.  They have closed ground on the peloton (if I can borrow a cycling term) and are no longer the consensus worst team in baseball. The Phillies have reached the All Star break with the worst record in baseball.  They have lost twice as many games as they have won, have a 29-58 record, and a .333 PCT.  They are 22.5 games out of first place in the East Division.  They are 10.5 games behind the fourth place Mets.  As far as the playoffs go, they are better off in the Wild Card race where they are only 21 games behind the Rockies.  “Playoffs? The Phillies were 3-3 last week!  The Phillies swept a two-game series in Seattle to end the west coast swing of their road trip.  They returned to the east coast and salvaged their series against the Mets with a getaway day victory.

The Phillies offerings under their redesigned Schedule tab are too annoying to navigate. The graphics and ads make the load back and forth between pages too long to bear.  I don’t have the patience to get the team and individual info I would like to provide here.  For this I am truly sorry.

The Phillies were 2-4 last week.  The Phillies had a modest 2-game winning streak when the won the getaway game in Saint Louis and the series opener in Arizona.  Aaron Nola and Mark Leiter pitched the Phillies to victories in those two games and the bullpen didn’t blow either game.
