Call Ups

Quickly adding to what James posted earlier(Defratus call up), it appears both Cody Overbeck and Phillipe Aumont have been called up to Lehigh Valley from Reading and are on their way to Pawtucket for the ‘Pigs four game series.  The three corresponding roster moves for now it seems are the retirement of Ronnie Belliard, the release of Brian Gordon and a call up for Vance Worley.

Update: Add LHP Ryan Edell to the list of call ups from Reading to Lehigh Valley.  Edell threw the ball well in the Reading rotation, going 5-1 with a 3.50 ERA in 12 AA starts.  He will be plugged in to a rotation spot in Lehigh Valley.

Joe Savery goes from Clearwater to Reading, to take the spot of Cody Overbeck.  Savery was hitting .307 with 2 HR and 25 RBI with CLearwater and was the Phils Minor League Player of the Month for April.  Also going to Reading are relief pitcher Justin Friend, called up from Clearwater and RP Chance Chapman, sent down from Lehigh Valley.  Friend was recently named to the FSL All Star team and was 2-3 with a 2.12 ERA and 19 saves for the Threshers.

Update: The Phillies have signed RHP Tim Redding, 33, to a minor league deal.  Redding who has a good deal of major league experience, was pitching for AAA Albuquerque before opting out of his contract.  Redding was 2-7 with a 6.59 ERA in 12 starts this season at AAA. Redding last pitched in the majors in 2009 for the Mets.

Justin De Fratus promoted to Lehigh Valley

Per the man himself. And now its a race between Justin and Schwim to see who reaches the majors first.

Congrats Justin.

New site feature: Q/A

Hey, new feature. Instead of doing random mailbag posts, I created a new page at the top of the site called “Q/A”….post your prospect related questions, and when I have some time, I will do my best to answer them. It will be like a running question/answer log. Let’s try it.

And just because I know someone will post a question in this thread, I’m going to turn off the comments.

Lehigh Valley Weekly Report 15 June 2011

Lehigh Valley is now 41-24 (the high water mark in their history) after another good week (4-2) and in first place of the Northern Division of the International League, five games ahead of second place Scranton.  The ‘Pigs hit the road for a four game series in Pawtucket before they return to Coca Cola Park next Monday, when they begin a 8 game home stand (Indianapolis/Charlotte). Crazy Day In Allentown

Although not necessarily prospect relevant, the goings on today in Allentown probably deserve a post of its own. It goes as follows:

3B Ronnie Belliard announced his retirement pre-game. He had been the primary starting third baseman through the first part of the season but had seen his playing time decrease with the addition of Pete Orr.

Speaking of Pete Orr, he had been penciled in as the starting 3B this evening, but was pulled from the lineup when his wife went into labor.  Replacing him was Jeff Larish, who was supposed to be used in emergencies only after coming down with the flu circulating around the clubhouse. Around the System–Middle Infield

Not a whole heck of a lot to discuss in the middle infield from a prospect standpoint. Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez are the two who are on the 40 man roster, while Edgar Duran has been worth watching as well.

Lehigh Valley

Josh Barfield, 28, .271/.309/.389 in 203 AB’s; 4 HR 28 RBI; 7/13 SB; 6% bb rate/18% k rate; .245 vs. LH, .280 vs. RH, .213 with RISP; .344 in May. 53 games at 2B with 4 errors (.983); 4.49 R/F. Barfield has come on nicely at the plate with some key hits over the last month. Defensively he is adequate at best. Continue reading Around the System–Middle Infield

Clearwater Threshers Report (5/30-6/12)

Recap:  The Threshers went 6-6 over the past two weeks, including losing the first two versus the division-leading Daytona Cubs this weekend.  Clearwater is now 38-25 and sits six games behind Daytona in the FSL North as the first half winds down.  The magic number for Daytona to eliminate Clearwater from the first half title chase is now two.

Slightly different format this week:  as the daily box scores are posted and Gregg compiles his ‘Hot or Not’ lists that summarize weekly stats, I’m moving towards just throwing the stats up, then trying my hand at some commentary on topics that don’t bubble to the surface via these other posts.  I’m starting this week with some declining walk rates among Clearwater hitters and a tip of the cap to the Threshers bullpen.  Feel free to leave any yays or nays to this format in the comments.  On to the numbers: Continue reading Clearwater Threshers Report (5/30-6/12)
