Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 16, 2018

I arrived at the Complex at 8:30 AM.  The players parking lot was full to capacity.  As I walked up the driveway, I could see some coaches working with a pitcher on the mounds between Ashburn and Schmidt.  They cleared out before I could get there.  Eshelman and Thompson were came out and played catch in left field on Ashburn. Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 12-15, 2018

The minor league camp had a scheduled day off on Monday.  Most players were in and out of the Complex by 9:00 AM.  They received their new group assignments as their spring training games were set to start on Tuesday.

Bad weather kept fans away from the Complex although the weather cleared by early afternoon.  I stopped by to see if copies of the work groups were available.  They weren’t. Continue reading Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 12-15, 2018

Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 11, 2018

Daylight savings time, I lost an hour of sleep, and arrived at the Complex a little late.  So, of course, the players were out doing their drills and BP earlier than normal.  One benefit for Groups Three and Four was that the Phillies were to play a night game on the road, so they didn’t have to trudge over to DiMaggio. Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 10, 2018

I arrived at the Compex at 9:00 AM.  Players and coaches were already filing out to the fields.  Two intrasquad games were scheduled for 1:30 PM.

The players were on all four fields and some pitchers were on the two sets mounds between Ashburn/Schmidt and Carlton/Roberts Fields.   Continue reading Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 10, 2018

Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 9, 2018

They played two intrasquad games at the Complex Friday.

I managed to make it to the Complex in time to see the post-break work out.  As I waited for it to start, I was the only non autograph seeker there and was delighted when Mr. Kingery arrived.  We talked baseball for a while before I finally noticed that the players hadn’t taken their break in the dugouts as they had in days past.  Then I saw an umpire waiting outside the umpires’ locker room.  Hallelujah!  Games instead of drills. Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 8, 2018

The Phillies buses pulled out at 9:15 AM for the short hop to Tampa and their game against the Yankees.  As I drove past the buses, I waved.  The bus drivers waved back.  I also passed Group Four as they made their way over to DiMaggio Field for the work out’s 9:30 start.  Upon arrival, I learned that in addition to the game against Villanova, there would be two scrimmages at the Complex.  Woohoo! Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 7, 2018

The Phillies were playing again today, so I arrived at the Complex early, around 8:30.  I spotted coaches Berrios and Bergesen and two other coaches working with four pitchers individually.  They were on the mounds between Schmidt and Ashburn Fields.  It looked like they were working on mechanics.  Coach Berrios is a proponent of using one’s hips. He was working with Adonis Medina, the only player I recognized.  Their gray T’s displayed “Take Nothing for Granted” in place of their names. Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 6, 2018

The Phillies had an off day today.  So, the minor leaguers were on all four fields at the Complex.  That doesn’t mean that nobody went to DiMaggio Field.  Group Four was split into two groups – the Williamsport staff remained behind on Schmidt Field, and the GCL staff hiked over to DiMaggio.  Position players divided accordingly, all the group’s pitchers remained at the Complex.

Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 5, 2018

I heard the players were reporting early on Monday for photo day.  I met a couple of Topps photographers on Sunday.  I guess they were taking photos for collectible cards.  Which begs the question, “Which affiliate’s uniform do the players wear?”.  I can’t even get the groups list.  How do they determine which uniform a player should wear?  One of those questions that make me go “Hmm”.

Today was a repeat of yesterday.  Schmidt and Ashburn Fields were reserved for the major league camp.  Groups 3 and 4 hiked over to DiMaggio Field for their morning work out. Groups 1 and 2 began their day on Roberts and Carlton Fields,
