Mayberry Optioned

It seems that John Mayberry lost the coin toss, as he was optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley with the activation of Shane Victorino from the DL.  The Phillies options appeared to be A) Optioning Mayberry; B) Placing Gload on the DL with his hip issue; C) Optioning Francisco or D) Subjecting Martinez to Waivers and offering him back to Washington.  Mayberry was hitting .231 with 3 HR and 12 RBI to go along with 4 stolen bases.  He had started 12 games in a row, and 16 of the last 17 for the Phils, playing a solid CF in Victorino’s absence. Singleton moving back to 1B…for now

So this is the word. I have two really quick thoughts on this:

* He’s 19. He has plenty of time. Even with his slow start and the ankle injury (which didn’t help the slow start), he’s one of the youngest players in the FSL. He has all kinds of time, and this includes learning the outfield. If playing 1B for 2 months or even the rest of the year helps his ankle heal and gets him on track, fine.
* If his future is in Philadelphia, he’s eventually going to have to learn to play LF, because he’s not displacing Ryan Howard at 1B, and no one is taking Ryan Howard’s contract. Unless salaries inflate beyond belief over the next 3 years. But that’s a decision for 2-3 years down the road.

In the meantime, everyone take a deep breath on Singleton and relax. Time is on his side, yes it is.

2011 MLB Draft Notebook, v 3.0

With today’s article by Jim Salisbury, highlighting a number of guys the Phillies have expressed interest in, I figured now was as good a time as any to post my thoughts on these guys. I’m hoping Jim has another article this weekend with some last minute thoughts on who the Phillies are narrowing in on even further, as he’s in a class by himself when it comes to draft matters as they impact the Phillies. I’ll definitely have something else up this weekend, and then we’ll tune in Monday night to see the compensation round, and then rounds 2-30 on Tuesday, which I will be providing coverage for, and rounds 31-50, which Ryan will be helping with. The draft is always one of the busiest times of the year for the site here, and I’m grateful for all of my visitors, those who care about the draft and those who don’t just the same. In case you’ve missed it, v1.0 of my notebook is here and v2.0 is here. Now, 3.0 commences below the fold.

Box Score Recap, 2 June 2011

What if I was to tell you Trevor May had his best start of the year, and the Clearwater box score was a treasure trove of exciting nuggets. Would that be something you’d be interested in seeing?

A few loose ends

I wanted to give go over a few important links that have been pointed out to me.

Jim Salisbury, the only beat guy who makes a concerted effort to prep us for the draft, has up a column where he name drops a bunch of guys the Phillies are interested in. Read it here. My thoughts? Nimmo, Fernandez, Chafin, Hedges and possibly Miller will be gone by pick 39. I still expect the Phillies will take RHP Jeff Ames with either their 2nd or 3rd pick. Hes a Pacific Northwest guy, Phillies drafted him a few years ago, and his stuff has improved quite a bit since then. I think he’s rated in the 100-110 range or so, so our 2nd round pick seems like a good bet.

I also wanted to point out a website called Stadium Journey, which does extensive write-ups of lots of minor league parks, complete with pictures and other tidbits. If you can’t get to these places because you live thousands of miles away, its kind of cool to see the confines. You can see the tour of Brighthouse Field here and check out the rest of the site for some of the grounds of our enemies.

I present to you my new statistical toy: the Prospect Power Rating (PPR)

So here’s the thing. I get lots of ideas in my head, and most of them I either discard, or I begin working on it, then give up half way through and move on. The SONAR project, something I started years ago, is somewhere in category 2, because I have a lot of ideas for it, but its incredibly in depth, it takes a ton of time, and its imperfect. Until I figure out the ways to remove most of the imperfections, it will remain dead. But in the meantime, I had an idea that kind of comes out of that semi-failed project. I was thinking it would be fun to have a way to take a quick and dirty look at how our prospects are performing, but without doing a ton of heavy lifting and adjusting. I figured once I built the spreadsheet, I could do a lot of copy/paste work, and it would basically update itself. And I think I was right. Which means I should be able to maintain this with little effort, which means I won’t get bored with it and discard it. Maybe. Anyway, I figured I’d unveil it here, and we’ll see how it goes. Full explanation below the fold, as well as the inaugural rankings
