Williamsport and GCL Report

Sorry for the lack of updates. I had been having some computer troubles that I finally got resolved. I’m sure you’ve all been faithfully following along the last few weeks so I’ll recap Williamsport’s last two weeks and the past week for GCL.

Jason Knapp Answers

As promised, this entry will respond to your questions about Jason Knapp.  However, before I get started, I would like to explain our relationship.  I met Jason during Instructional League last year.  Jason lives in New Jersey, and many of my relatives are from New York so we had an immediate connection. Ironically, when Jason was 17 he was looking into colleges and his dad called my dad to discuss the pros and cons of the University of Virginia.  Ultimately, Jason signed with the University of North Carolina before accepting the Phillies offer to be their 2nd round selection. ‘Pigs Weekend Update

8/07/09–Terry Tiffee had a huge night going 4-4 with a double in the ‘Pigs 4-0 win over Scranton.  Gustavo Chacin (7-3) continued pitching well in his quest for a major league rotation spot next year, going six shutout innings, giving up just 5 hits.  He walked 3 and struck out 5.  A Paul Hoover RBI double got Lehigh Valley on the board in the 4th and a sacrifice fly by Hoover tacked on another run for the ‘Pigs in the 6th.  A two run 7th featuring RBI singles by Tiffee and John Mayberry put the game away for Lehigh Valley.  Both Mike Cervenak and Rich Thompson added two hits apiece. Box Score Roundup, 8/9

This is something I wanted to start doing at the beginning of the season, but one thing led to another, and its now August and the season is almost over. gregg has been kind enough to try and start discussion threads, but as I mentioned in my site note, even those threads are out of control. So to help focus the discussion, I figured that I’d put a post up every night when all of the games have concluded with links to the box scores and then notes from each game. That will give everyone some talking points to focus on, and hopefully we can remove some of the noise from the site. So check below for our first installment

A quick site note

A number of people have mentioned it in other posts and in emails to me, so I guess it needs to be formally addressed. I’ve stated before in the site guidelines and in numerous posts, that I’d like to try and limit the discussion of the big league club here on this site. I know everyone wants to talk about Jamie Moyer, Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard and everyone else, but that’s not why this site was created. It was understandable that people were speculating on Roy Halladay, everyone in the country was, but that time has passed. There are only a few weeks left in the minor league seasons, so I’d like to focus on that. I created a message board for the purpose of giving people a place to discuss Phillies prospects every day, but it seems that it was forgotten this winter. I’d urge those of you who like to post quite frequently in the comments to discuss actively there. The people who contribute and write content for this site spend a lot of their time doing so, they’re owed respect, and that means not derailing their posts with whatever random thought pops into your head. Thanks.

Draft notes

* The signing deadline is one week away, and I’ve finally gotten around to updating the draft picks page. The Phillies have signed 7 of their first 9 picks (Colvin and Hudson remain), and have signed 31 of their 49 picks. Check below the fold for more

Daily Discussion

Pablo Ozuna was released by the Phillies organization after serving his 50 game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.

Brian Rosenberg made his AA debut on Friday evening and pitched two scoreless innings for Reading. Scott Mathieson followed that up with another scoreless inning of his own.

Down in Clearwater, friend of Phuture Phillies, Michael Schwimer has not given up an earned run in his last nine appearances, spanning 12 innings,  He has struck out 18 during the same period.

Jason Knapp was listed as the #4 prospect in the Indian system, while  Carlos Carrasco was ranked 10th  by Jim Calis of Baseball America in his recent list of the Top 10 prospects in the Indians organization.  Both Marson and Donald were not on the list.

Kyle Drabek went 5 innings and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits tonight against Binghamton. Here is one vote for shutting him down or significantly limiting his innings for the remainder of the year.  He is currently at 140 IP.

Pirates sign Colton Cain; Colvin implications

As reported by Baseball America today, the Pirates signed 8th rounder Colton Cain for $1.13M. Cain was ranked the 14th best prospect in Texas, #109 in the entire country. By comparison, Brody Colvin was ranked #3 in Louisiana, and #43 in the entire country. Cain’s bonus could provide the Colvin camp with some extra leverage, and this could basically confirm my suspicion that it was going take seven figures to keep Colvin away from LSU. I’d say now that we’re looking at $1.2M at least to get a deal done. The signing deadline is 9 days away, so there’s still time, and deals should start trickling in this coming week.

Slayden retires, Susdorf promoted

In a somewhat surprising move, 27 year old OF Jeremy Slayden has announced his retirement according to readingphillies.com.  Slayden has had a tough year after being demoted from AAA Lehigh Valley back down to Reading after struggling both at the plate and in the field for the IronPigs.  His production has picked up at the plate in Reading, and was hitting .281 with 9 HR and 30 RBI for the RPHILS, while seeing limited action in the field.  While having a fair amount of success through his minor league career at the plate, SLayden was a defensive liability because of a weak arm and a lack of speed.  After a solid season last year at AA Reading, SLayden was left exposed in the Rule 5 draft, however, was not taken.

Taking Slayden’s place on the Reading roster is 23 year old Fresno State product Steve Susdorf.  Susdorf started the year at (A) Lakewood, and hit .333 in 78 at bats before getting called up to Clearwater.  In CLearwater, Susdorf hit .373 with 3 HR and 22 RBI, with a .423 OBP.  He hit a huge .467 with RISP.  With Domonic Brown/Quintin Berry/Susdorf in the Reading outfield, it becomes an area of alot of interest.

Tyson Brummett was placed on the Reading DL with elbow inflammation, making room on the roster for Brian Rosenberg.
