Very Abbreviated Threshers News

With the draft dominating this week’s Phuture Phillies news the Clearwater Report is short and sweet this week. Continue reading Very Abbreviated Threshers News

Draft Day is here

My favorite day of the year, other than the clinching game of the World Series of course. The Phillies don’t pick until #75, and this year, the MLB draft heads to the MLB Network, starting at 6PM. The Phillies pick probably won’t come up till 10 PM or so. I’ll be following the draft once it starts, I’ll update picks here, and I’ll also post any Phillies related news that should pop up. Use this post to discuss everything draft.

Dominic Brown to miss 3-4 weeks

I figured it was only a matter of time until someone hijacked the draft thread to discuss this, so this is a pre-emptive strike.

Clearwater’s Dom Brown, one of the Phillies top positional prospects, will be out for three to four weeks after fracturing the fifth finger on his right hand after getting hit by a pitch Monday night.

“He’s got a slight fracture and that’s too bad because he’s been playing and swinging the bat well,” Phillies director of minor league operations Steve Noworyta said. “We’re going to have to hold off with him for a little bit.”

Doesn’t seem like a big issue. Link here.

VSL June Update – Who To Watch

Several readers had commented that it would be a useful exercise to highlight who to watch in the complex leagues this season.  The VSL started a few weeks ago, so now we have some idea of who is playing well and, frankly, who is playing.  These leagues are developmental leagues, so the better prospects generally play the most, and play at the most demanding defensive positions (SS/CF/C).  Without detailed scouting reports and eyewitness accounts of these players, we are really relying on their statistics and the Phillies judgement over who to play to form opionions on the players.

This article will deal with the VSL with a follow-up on the DSL next week.  One note on the DSL – A number of people have noticed the production of new 18-year-old signee Nevri Jimenez who started the year 17-30 with power (7 extra base hits) and speed (4 SB).  The only thing he has not done is draw walks, though it is hard to complain about that when you are 17-30.  While he is a little old to be considered a top prospect, the fact that he is a new signee batting in a prominent lineup position (leadoff) and playing prominent defensive positions (SS/CF) is a good sign.  He is clearly one to watch this season at DSL.

2009 Mock Draft

Unlike past years, this is the only mock draft I’m doing, mainly because the Phillies don’t have a pick until #75, but also because of the strangeness of this draft. At the top you’ve got arguably the best pitching prospect of all time, then a great college hitter, and then about 20 guys who seem like they could go anywhere from 3 to 22. Instead of just throwing out random names, I’ve spent some time compiling a database of the past 5 years of picks in the first three rounds. I’m a believer in teams going with what they know, meaning that they develop a trust with crosscheckers in certain states, or they target the same type of prospect and will lean that way when in doubt. So you’ll get lots of information here. If you don’t care about the draft, that’s fine, but I know there are those that do. Please keep the discussion on topic, thanks. Lets get started…

‘Pigs Weekend Update

6/5/09–Andrew Carpenter was on the hill to face Indianapolis in the final game of the four game series and looked outstanding once again in the 3-0 shutout ‘Pigs victory.  Carpenter (4-0)went seven very strong, shutout innings giving up just four hits (3 singles).  He walked two and struck out six. The game was tied at 0-0 until Rich THompson knocked in Jeremy Slayden on an RBI triple.  Lehigh Valley added two more in the ninth on a John Mayberry RBI double, and David Newhan RBI single. Tyler Walker pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 3rd save. Thompson, Mayberry, and Marson all had two hits for Lehigh Valley, who took 3 out of 4 from Indianapolis. Inky discusses Phils’ prospects

Jim Salisbury gives his take on the Phils’ ongoing search for starting pitching and the chances of certain players leaving the system.

He hits some on the head and misses wildly on others (i.e. Travis D’Arnaud).

Feel free to discuss.

Phillies will get the chance to re-draft Kyle Gibson?

As everyone knows, the Phillies took a late round flier on Kyle Gibson 3 years ago before he went to Missouri, where his career blossomed, including a dynamite showing in the Cape Cod league. Prior to his junior year, he was being viewed as a surefire Top 10 pick, but his velocity reportedly dipped into the mid 80’s in his last start, and its now being reported by BA that he has a stress fracture in his arm and won’t throw for 6 weeks. Last year, if you remember, Tanner Scheppers suffered a similar fate with a stress fracture in his shoulder that eventually saw him slip from a Top 10 pick out of the first round, eventually being taken by the Pirates and going unsigned. Scheppers has come back healthy and is now again being talked about as a top 10 pick, with many teams still waiting to get clearance from their doctors on him.

I’ll have more on Gibson when I finish my mock draft, but at this point I’ll probably drop him out of the top 32. Ideally, I’d love the Phillies to take him at 75 if he gets there, follow him this summer, and if he’s able to throw before the deadline, hopefully sign him for first round money.
