Nola’s Numbers Against Bowie; August 19, 2014

I listened to Aaron Nola’s outing on Baysox radio.  Brad was actually there, and posted his observations in the Box Score Recap.  Here’s what I charted during the game.

  • 5 IP, 5 H,  2 R,  2 ER,  2 BB,  2 K
  • 21 batters, 14 first pitch strikes
  • 79 pitches, 50 strikes
  • 5 swinging strikes, 13 called strikes, 15 fouls, 17 balls in play
  • both strike outs were of the swing-and-miss variety
  • 6 ground ball outs, 4 fly ball outs, 2 pop ups, 5 singles
  • 2 line drive singles, 1 ground ball single, 2 bunt singles
  •  2 of the fly ball outs were line drives
  • the radio announcers only mentioned his velo once at 91 mph
  • I saw Twitter reports of 92-93 with spikes to 95 and one at 96
  • he got no decision and left with the score tied 2-2

I would categorize this as another good outing.  These are still uncharted waters for his arm.  Even with inning’s limits and pitch counts, he is continuing a starting pitcher’s workout regimen much further into the summer than he ever has.

Walter Completes Sweep of Lakeland; August 17, 2014

After 124 games and 37 series, the Clearwater Threshers finally swept a team in a three game series this weekend.  Thanks to some timely hitting and excellent starting pitching the Threshers have their fourth 3-game winning streak of the second half and the season.  Friday, Jordan Guth pitched 7 innings of 4-hit ball allowing 1 earned run.  Saturday, Colin Kleven pitched 6 innings of 5-hit ball allowing 2 earned runs.

Today, Kevin Walter made his second start and registered his first win of the season.  He pitched a strong game and was replaced after 5 innings.  His final line was – Continue reading Walter Completes Sweep of Lakeland; August 17, 2014

Offense Supports Kleven; August 16, 2014

Colin Kleven posted his 4th consecutive quality start, and third win among those starts, with a solid 105-pitch effort against the Lakeland Flying Tigers.  The offense, which was non-existent in Kleven’s 5-hit, 1-0 loss in his last start, staked him to 6 runs Saturday night.  Kleven rebounded from a couple of mistakes and left after 6 innings with a 6-2 lead.  The big righty kept the Tigers’ batters off balance most of the night and the Threshers held on to win 7-5.  Kleven’s final line was – Continue reading Offense Supports Kleven; August 16, 2014

GCL, FSL, and Biddle; August 13, 2014

I attended my first GCL game in several weeks today.  Denton Keys pitched a solid 5 innings against the GCL Pirates.  He scattered 5 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batter allowing 2 runs, only one of them earned.  The defense was a little shaky all day.  The 3 errors charged were a little generous.  A couple more could have been charged.

Austin Davis and undrafted free agent Kyle Bogese combined to pitch the final 4 innings.  Davis allowed 3 hits in 2.1 innings but was aided by a pick off and a caught stealing.  Bogese got the win with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball.  Each reliever recorded 3 strikes out.  The Phillies won 3-2. Crawford Clubs Cubs; August 8, 2014

J.P. Crawford belted 2 home runs as he went 3 for 4 with a stolen base to lead the Threshers to an 8-7 victory over the Daytona Cubs.  Crawford’s 2 home runs sailed over the Oakley sign in right field for those familiar with Bright House Field.  The first cleared the back fence and left the stadium. Biddle Baffles “Bears”; August 6, 2014

A clean-shaven Jesse Biddle made his 2014 Threshers’ debut tonight against the Daytona Cubs. The young lefty had only pitched 2 GCL innings since his last start for Reading on June 23rd. He came into the game with a 5-inning limit. Continue reading Biddle Baffles “Bears”; August 6, 2014

Nunez Stifles Cubs, Threshers Lose, Yada Yada, Biddle; August 5, 2014

Miguel Nunez pitched another gem tonight, and the Threshers lost 3-1.  Nunez faced a Daytona line up that featured 3 through 6 hitters – Kyle Schwarber (#4 overall in 2014), Dan Vogelbach, Rock Shoulders, and Bill McKinney (#24 overall in 2013).  They are all built like blocks of granite and all bat left-handed.  Vogelbach and Shoulders have combined for 27 home runs in the FSL this year.  Nunez’ line was – Continue reading Nunez Stifles Cubs, Threshers Lose, Yada Yada, Biddle; August 5, 2014

Mets Drub Threshers; August 4, 2014

Nic Hanson made his first start of the season with the Threshers after 3 rehab starts in the GCL where he pitched 5 hitless innings in his last appearance. Hanson pitched well in Lakewood last season before being promoted to Clearwater for 5 so-so August starts. He’s tall at 6’7 and features 3 pitches – a high 80s fastball that ranges from 86-90, a change up, and a slider. The slider is still a work in progress, but the change up is an effective secondary pitch. Hanson came into the game on an 80 pitch limit. Continue reading Mets Drub Threshers; August 4, 2014

Leiter Struggles Against Mets; August 1, 2014

The Threshers 3 game winning streak came to an end when they returned home Friday night. Mark Leiter was coming off 2 solid starts where he had allowed only 2 runs in 16 innings, one his complete game shutout of Charlotte on July 20th. Leiter battled with control issues as the Threshers lost the first game of an 8-game home stand, 8-3. Continue reading Leiter Struggles Against Mets; August 1, 2014

Nola/Quinn Lead Assault on Fort Myers; July 31, 2014

Aaron Nola 2-hit the Miracle through 5 innings and the Threshers scored 9 runs in the second and third innings as Clearwater beat Fort Myers and took the series against the FSL South, first half division champions, three games to one. In the process, they helped drop the Miracle into a second place tie in the second half standings.

Aaron Nola pitched another good game. He allowed one run on 2 hits and a walk. He threw 73 pitches, 47 for strikes. He relied heavily on his fast ball, throwing predominantly 2- and 4- seam fastballs through the first 3 innings. One of his rare early inning curve balls resulted in a strike out to end the first inning. Continue reading Nola/Quinn Lead Assault on Fort Myers; July 31, 2014
