2011 Reader Top 30, #2

In less than surprising news, Domonic Brown took the #1 spot in a rout, so we’ll move on to #2 now and things should get more interesting now. Just a few reminders. If you want to write in someone not listed in the poll, vote for OTHER, and then give your choice in the comment section. Lets just get right to it.

1. Domonic Brown, OF

2011 Reader Top 30, #1

We may as well start this one now, since I don’t envision it even being close. For those of you new to the site, here’s how it works. We start with #1 and work our way to #30. Once a player wins the vote for a spot, you can’t vote for him again. Obviously. Most votes will be open for 2 days before a new one is opened up. In the event that the voting for a spot is within a few votes, a run-off will be done, the winner gets the first spot, the runner up gets the 2nd spot, and we move on down the line. Its easy, you’ll get the hang of it. Also, if you decide to vote “Other”, make sure you include who you are voting for in the comments section of the post.

So, here we go.

Phillies take utility man Mike Martinez in the Rule 5 draft

I was going to do a bigger writeup on him, but I’ll save the words. As you can see from his track record, he has a limited offensive skill set. His batting average has fluctuated wildly, he doesn’t draw many walks, strikes out a fair amount, and hes capable of swiping a few bases. His greatest strength is his ability to play all over the field. With Wilson Valdez making the league minimum in 2011, it would seem Martinez will be in camp to compete for the 25th spot on the roster. The Phillies will, almost assuredly, go with 13 position players and 12 pitchers. So…

C (2) Ruiz, Schneider
INF (5) Howard, Utley, Rollins, Polanco, Valdez
OF (4) Ibanez, Victorino, Francisco, Gload

SP (5) Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt, Worley, Blanton
RP (6) Lidge, Madson, Contreras, Reyes, Baez, Bastardo

That’s 22 of 25 spots. If Brown makes the team, or if another OF is brought in, that is 5, and will leave one spot open for a utility infielder. Last year, Dobbs would have been the extra infielder. So Martinez could fill that role. Who knows. The roster is still wide open, 3 spots are uncertain. We’ll see what happens.

Rule 5 draft discussion

Here is where we can discuss the Rule 5 draft tomorrow. Will any Phillies prospects (Savery, Myers, E Garcia, Brummett, Kennelly) be taken? Will the Phillies take anyone? I’m sure they will. Here are the guys that interest me. My assumption is we’d take another possible bullpen piece, as there won’t be much room on the roster to carry a position player who won’t really get a chance to play.

Wynn Pelzer, RHP (BAL)
Aneury Rodriguez, RHP (TAM)
Michael Dubee, RHP (PIT)
Josh Wall, RHP (LAD)
Zech Zinicola, RHP (WAS)
Dylan Axelrod, RHP (CHW)
Yohan Pino, RHP (CLE)

Full list of eligible guys here.

Phillies release Jesus Sanchez and Yohan Flande

Per Matt Gelb on the twitter.

I would imagine this is to clear space in case they see someone they like in the Rule 5 draft.

I have no issues with letting Flande go, but I think Sanchez had some potential as a reliever. Maybe they can bring him back on a minor league deal. I’m sure they’ll try to, actually.

Werth signs with Nationals, Phillies receive draft picks

As you’ve heard, Jayson Werth has signed an eleventy billion year deal for three trillion dollars with the Nationals. The Nats first round pick, #6, is protected, as the top 15 draft picks are every year, so the Phillies will receive the Nats 2nd round pick. Werth was the highest rated available free agent this winter, so the Phillies will receive the first compensation pick of the sandwich round, which this year will be pick #34. So the Phillies will pick #30 and then #34. The 2nd round pick is tougher to determine because a number of compensation picks will be doled out this winter.

Discussion topic: Opening assignments?

I was thinking about this today. There will likely be some interesting 2011 assignments, some of which will certainly be determined by spring training performance. Here are the guys I’m thinking about now, but feel free to mention any others that you find intriguing.

Josh Zeid – AA maybe?
Cameron Rupp – A? A+?
Phillippe Aumont – AA?
Trevor May – A+?
Justin De Fratus – AAA?
JC Ramirez – AA?
Domingo Santana – SS? A?

Lets hear it.

Scheduling updates

Hi everyone. I wanted to give a quick update as to my thought process going forward. The Rule 5 draft is December 9th, and my plan is to start the Reader Top 30 the next day. We’ll do one per day or so during the week. Factor in Christmas and stuff, and we’ll finish sometime in the middle of January. After we finish the Reader Top 30, I’ll unveil my top 30, in detail, and thanks to a suggestion in the comments, I’ll go one spot at a time. With each writeup, I’ll also include a poll question about the prospect, which should hopefully fuel more discussion. In the meantime, I plan on writing a few pieces, and I need to start collecting the data to plug into my spreadsheets to calculate the SONAR scores for 2010. So, look for more articles from me in the coming weeks/months, as well as the start of the Reader Top 30 and then a new approach to my Top 30. As always, thanks for reading!

Topic of the day: First to the majors in 2011

Today’s topic is this. Which Phillies prospect that currently has zero days of MLB service time will be the first to reach the major leagues in 2011? Vote for your choice, then explain why you think that below. If you vote “OTHER”, make sure you put your choice in the comments section.

11/9 Open discussion and a poll

I wanted to start a new discussion repository, so this is it. Talk about whatever you’d like. I’m currently working on my preliminary top 30, because I’m again putting together a Top 30 list for the Maple Street Press Phillies annual thing. Which got me to thinking. So we’ll have a poll, related to the Reader Top 30. Last year we started late and voted up through spring training. We can do that again this year, or we can start earlier, like after Thanksgiving, and then wrap things up after Christmas. I have no preference, I just run the thing, so its your call. Vote, and also express your opinion one way or another. I won’t necessarily just decide based on the vote totals (unless its completely lopsided), I want to hear rationale as well. Thanks.
