Irvin was victimized by a home run ball with one out in the third inning.  He struck out the side in the inning, but the lead off batter reached on a fielding error by Mitch Walding.  Irvin’s only walk also occurred in the inning with two out.

The IronPigs were held to just three hits.  They scored the game’s first run on Mitch Walding’s RBI single in the first inning.  Their last scoring opportunity was Matt McBride’s lead off double in the second inning.  After a double play ground ball ended their fourth inning, the final 15 IronPigs’ batters were retired in order.

The BlueClaws took an early lead with a run in the first inning when Kevin Markham scored from third while Nick Maton was caught stealing second.  They closed within a run with 2 runs in the sixth on Quincy Nieporte’s 2-run HR (5).

The BlueClaws had 12 hits and 4 walks, but went 2-12 with RISP and left 11 men on base.

Williamsport (1-0) beat State College, 3-2.  Ethan Lindow (3.60) pitched five innings.  He gave up 2 runs on 4 hits.  He walked none and struck out two.  Randy Alcantara (1-0, 0.00) got the win with three, two-hit innings.  Luis Ramirez (0.00) earned his first save.

Lindow retired the first nine Spikes he faced.  Three of the four hits he allowed came in a two-run fourth.  All three went foe extra bases.  Lindow induced nine ground outs to four fly ball outs.

The Crosscutters tied the game with two rubs in the sixth on Julio Francisco’s two-run HR after Edwin Rodriguez’ lead off single.. They took the lead with a run in the seventh on Brayan Gonzalez’ RBI single following Danny Mayer’s lead off triple.

Mayer had 3 hits in 3 AB.  Catcher Rafael Marchan had 2 hits in 4 AB and a stolen base.

Julio Francisco is a 20-year old who hit .318 in the DSL last season with zero HR.  I would expect him to return to Clearwater and the GCL when the draft class is assigned to teams, but who knows.

  1. Wow can’t wait for The GCL both teams. Some please test Irvin in AAA please. He’s walking though AAA like it was HS baseball.
Can’t wait for daily Bohm reports .

  2. Great to see the short season teams get started. Wsport has a terrific rotation on paper. Let’s hope they perform well.

  3. My favorite catcher in the organization, Rafael Marchan, had a nice opener. 2 knocks and a stolen base. Like Whitey Ashburn used to say, he must have good speed for a catcher. Keep an eye on him. I predict he will be in our top 25 (if not higher) prospects in the off season.

  4. Romus I wonder what Middelton is thinking now about his hires for GM,and Manager

  5. Very very early in his career, and only two games, but 17-year old DR RHP Israel Alfonso Puello could be another gem down the road.
He was signed for a little less than $500K last year and so far mosy of his metrics are plus in the DSL, but again, SSS.
