Groups 1 and 2 traveled to Englebert Complex in Dunedin. Groups 3 and 4 played at Carpenter Complex. Group 5 played a local college team at Carpenter. Jay Hernandez started at third for group 4, so no serious injury from the other day. Zach Green made a couple good defensive plays today. Roster Moves
A busy morning for the Phils who announced several roster moves. C Lou Marson was released. P Kenny Giles, P Cesar Jiminez and SS Andres Blanco were re-assigned to minor league camp. OF Zach Collier, OF Tyson Gillies, P Jeremy Horst and C Tommy Joseph were optioned to minor league camp. I wouldn’t characterize any of these moves as a surprise absent mild surprise at Marson’s release. Thinking of that as a positive, maybe the Phils are feeling more comfortable with Tommy Joseph’s health.
MILB Spring Training 2014; March 12th, Phillies vs. Pirates rained out
The minor league games with the Pirates were cancelled today due to rain along the coast. It must have been heavier in the Bradenton area, because Group 5 was able to play their scheduled game against the Canadian Junior National Team. Groups 1 and 2 worked out on one of the fields and Groups 3 and 4 played an intra-squad game. Kyle Kendrick pitched for Group 3, Carlos Ruiz, caught, and Cesar Hernandez played third base. Innings started with different on base scenarios and Ruiz and Hernandez batted in most innings.
Kendrick missed a throwing session yesterday due to the flu. He threw 5 respectable innings today. Group 4 managed a few opposite field singles, but were generally over-matched when he threw his off-speed stuff. Jan Hernandez made a great diving catch but left the game afterwards. Spring Training 2014; March 11th, Phillies vs. Blue Jays
Groups 1 and 2 played at the Carpenter Complex. Groups 3 and 4 traveled to Dunedin. Group 5 hosted the Three Rivers College Raiders, an NJCAA member from the MCCAC. I decided to go to the Complex to watch Groups 1 and 2. Hoby Milner started for Group 2, Barry Enright for Group 1. I opted to watch Milner and the younger pitchers in Group 2. The Phils and the Draft–Few Hits, Plenty of Misses
Looking at the first three rounds of the major league baseball draft over the past 10 years, it becomes quite clear why the Phils have the lack of depth that they are currently suffering from. They have had very few high draft picks who have panned out in the manner you would hope and to some extent, expect. When you look at the teams around the major leagues and review their first three rounds of draft picks over the last 10 years, there are very few teams that have produced less major league talent (regulars) than the Phils.
The benefit that the Phils received from their drafts over the last 10 years is that specific pieces have helped land the likes of Halladay, Oswalt, and Blanton. Those pieces were critical to the success of the Phils (some more than others) in 2008-2011. It is notable however, that absent Halladay, there is no player that had prolonged success in the Phils organization. The future holds some degree of hope with the ultimate success of the last 3-4 years still to be determined.
Looking back year by year: 2013: (1) JP Crawford; (2) Andrew Knapp; (3) Cord Sandberg; (3) Jan Hernandez. It’s too early to pass judgement and the Crawford pick has the potential to erase plenty of bad draft memories. Knapp has been hampered by Tommy John surgery which he underwent late last year. Both Sandberg and Hernandez struggled mightily with the bat last year but have the talent to erase their first 100 professional at bats pretty quickly. MLB.com Phillies Top 20 Prospects
Today mlb.com released their Top 20 prospects in the Philadelphia minor league system. I will start by saying that mlb.com has always had the outliers on rankings and that I don’t always agree with their rankings. That being said they do talk to a lot of people who see these players so there are things that can be taken away.
Here is the list with writeups, but for the lazy here is the list. Continue reading MLB.com Phillies Top 20 Prospects

2014 MiLB Spring Training, Seve Gonzalez, and Other Observations
Severino Gonzalez threw two innings in Group 3’s game against Group 4 today. I had spent the previous innings watching Groups 1 and 2 square off, but came over to Ashburn Field to observe Gonzalez. He faced Nick Ferdinand, Cameron Perkins, and Edgar Duran in his first inning. He threw 5 strikes to Ferdinand before finally striking him out swinging. He threw 3 strikes to Perkins before tempting him with two purpose pitches low and just off the plate. Continue reading 2014 MiLB Spring Training, Seve Gonzalez, and Other Observations
