Box Score Recap – 8/31/2013

Some notes – Cesar and MiniMart were recalled to take the place of John McDonald and Michael Young. I’d imagine Freddy Galvis, Cam Rupp, maybe Tyson Gillies, (I’d say that’s a coin toss), and a bunch of pitchers will go up agfter tomorrow’s game. CLR finishes out their season today, LV, REA and LKW tomorrow, and WIL has games Tuesday and Wednesday to close out their season.

As for Saturday’s results, Trevor May struck out 10 RPhils in a no-decision. The bottom of the lineup came through, though, with all five guys from 5-9 picking up a double, and combining for all five runs and eight hits to take the win. Nice lines from Luis Paulino and Miguel Nunez – they went five and six scoreless innings, respectively. And another in a long line of not-great-looking lines from Mitch Gueller – 5IP/5R (4 earned)/7H/2BB/1K. He finished the year with a WHIP of 1.879. He’s not walking a ton of guys – 26 in 58 innings is just a shade over 4BB/9IP, so he seems to be throwing strikes. He’s just not missing enough bats. Let the “change him to a position player” debate commence. Or continue, I guess.

      1. At this rate Mini Mart should secure a spot on the Wall of Fame for resiliency alone.
Or the best photos of Ruben from 2011’s Christmas party!

      1. Everyone – please show this board tangible data that definitively proves that Mini Mart is as bad as everyone says vs the 25th man on other rosters in baseball.

        1. I agree that the Martinez hate is a little excessive. (And expectations too high for middle infield reserves.) But I do think the Phillies can and should do better, and I doubt many teams have a worst 25th man on the roster. I don’t have time to do detailed research, but how is this:

As a hitter, his wRC+ over the past 3 years is an horrendous 32. There are two players – but only 2 players – worse during that time period (minimum 300 PA).

Now you can say he isn’t in there for his hitting. But his PA still count, and almost every other team manages to do better even with it’s middle infield back ups. Besides, it’s not as if he is a defensive whizz out there; he is just okay.

In terms of WAR, he is -1.4 over that same span. An imperfect measure to be sure, but, to the extent it is accurate, by definition not someone who should be taking up a major league roster spot.

    1. If you are the same anonymous commenter who I ridiculed for suggesting the notion last week, I must apologize. Jim Salisbury just suggested it was a “long shot” possibility, so I guess it’s conceivable. The rationalist in me asks, “why burn the option and the 40-man spot a year before your have to?” but the fan in me would definitely like to see him.

      1. Two things:

        1. Why does it matter if they burn an option year…? if he’s not in the MLB in the next 3 years we might be in some trouble.
        2. Why does it matter if he’s on the bench (and if he is called up he wouldn’t be most likely) considering he wouldn’t be playing anyway.

        1. Once again Looper has said SEVERAL TIMES in recent days that Franco IS NOT going to be a September call up.

        2. Re # 1, two words, Dom Brown.

Now, that said, I tend to agree that burning an option year is not a huge deal. The real divide is between the people around here who think he is likely to be on the 25 man out of spring training next year, and those of us who think his ETA is 2015, with a September 2014 call up (and an outside chance at a mid 2014 call up, if things break right for Franco and badly for Asche).

If the former are correct, then bringing him up in September this year would make sense. If the latter are correct, then not – even the small price of burning an option would not be worth bringing him up now. Based upon public statements, the Phillies appear to be in the latter camp. Appear to be is the operative word. I would be very surprised by a call up, but stranger things have happened.

          1. I’m not necessarily advocating a call up, I just don’t think saving an option year is really worth it… especially if the front office truly believes he can contribute next year out of spring training. I’d personally like to see him get AAA time before a call up is even considered.

  1. very nice , Michael Young will have his chance to win a world series, retire in style. I can’t see Franco coming up anonymous. maybe you know something I dont. just seems he will go to dominican team and play winter ball. its a lot of ball for a 20 year old.

    1. dont think a player like franco will need to be optioned to many times. Need to get his feet wet and start his MLB career early. like aramas ramirez did @ 20 manny machado 20, Adrian Beltre 20. he can be that type of player. Bring him up

      1. Thats some good company you are putting this kid in, but I have never seen him play, so really dont know how good he can become. wish i would have gotten to see him at reading, to see his range at third. there seems to be more than a few scouts who think he isnt going to stay at third, nomatter what asche does.

  2. Id rather the Phillies not play so well in garbage time and actually end up with a top 5 pick and real good second round pick , so maybe call up Gillies as my confidence in him to have an impact is lower than a midgets knees

    1. so true but if you look at the philadelphia sports teams history, they keep doing this, instead of tanking for better pick they win meanless games. the philadelphia 76ers are doing the right thing, san antonio did it for duncan and won 4 titles, cleveland did it to get lebron, Washington didnt try to get better to get harper, and many other examples, if i owned this team, my rotation would be cloyd, kenricks, morgan, minor the rest of season, and not play utley and rollins a lot instead galvis and herdanez in infield, and rest brown and bring up gillies and susdorf to play.

      Like

      1. the permanent mediocrity of the 76ers hopefully ends this year with them being the worst team in the league by a shit ton

        Like

      2. The Celtics also famously tanked for Duncan and wound up with … well, whoever it was, it wasn’t Duncan, and they sucked for another decade. You act as if its a given that if a team stinks badly enough, they will be rewarded with a franchise-altering (I’ll not use the term “generational” here, as it has sparked usage debates) talent. It can’t be ignored that for every Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, there is a Delmon Young and Matt Bush.

    2. sf Dan…..I agree with you…bring up all the detris, let DaFratus pitch every day and end up with a top 7 pick and then sign 8 free agents or whatever… this team is so mediocre that any way to improve through draft choices or even lousy free agents – which is what the 12013/14 class is characterized as, would constitute an improvement – some at least ?

  3. As far as their prospect status goes, midnight draws near for both Tyson Gillies and Zach Collier; might as well take one last look before cutting ties

    Like

  4. Zack Collier is hardly near striking midnight, probably no more than 6 PM. Gillies? Cinderella probably has a better chance of finding the golden slipper before 12 AM than Gillies has of becoming a major league player. And this comes from a guy who absolutely loved Gillies potential and skill set and thought he was going to be the future CFer in Philadelphia.

    1. “I have very little doubt he (Zach Collier)will play in the big leagues,” Phillies director of player development Joe Jordan said. “The fact that he is having a strong August speaks volumes about what he is made of and how tough he is.”
A sandwich pick selected 34th overall in the 2008 draft, Collier, who turns 23 on Sept. 8, credits his late-season surge to his experience and maturity.
“At a younger age I think I would have kind of shut it down [if having a bad season], and this year I feel I have grown up a lot and wanted to continue to work hard,” Collier said.

  5. Anyone got scouting reports on either of the guys we got for McDonald/Young? Just inventory?

    Like

    1. Rasmussen’s height is a concern but from what I’ve read and seen (seen very little), he may be more than inventory. I think he was a second round pick. He’s a lefty. He like many pitchers is a boom or bust but he’s not that far off Ethan Martin level who to me still has a chance to be 4th starter or so.

Rasmussen supposedly has a great slider (at least a few years ago), walks too many, I don’t see games for June and July so I don’t know why. Short pitcher so his plane for fastballs isn’t ideal.

I feel like he is a sort of replacement for Wetzler the 5th round pick they didn’t sign and I think he’s only a year older or so and pitching at the AA level. I have not seen him though except for some highlights from UCLA.

  6. California–The hot end to his season might well buy Collier some more time; he’s had some disruptions because of his wrist injury and his 50 game suspension

  7. FYI I asked a question about Franco yesterday in BA’s Hot Sheet chat – here was the question and answer:

SteveB (Philly): Mikael Franco has been really consistent all year. We keep hearing about an “arm bar” concern with him – but the results have been terrific. Has his performance this year superseded the concern?
J.J. Cooper: Yes. There are concerns about whether he ends up at third or if this move to first is a sign that the Phillies don’t think his range will play at third. But the man can hit, that much is pretty clear.

    1. Quite a turnaround for BA. Next is Keith Law. Or to borrow a phrase – if Franco has an ABS let’s see if we can teach it to some of our other prospects.

  8. Shortstop Malquin Canelo, the next Freddy Galvis?.
The Phillies wanted to have the 5-foot-10, 156-pound Canelo get regular reps at Williamsport. Even though he entered the weekend hitting just .209 in 163 at-bats, Canelo, who turns 19 this week, has shown promise, according to Williamsport manager Nelson Prada. “He’s hitting better than his average shows,” Prada said. “And his defense, I can put him on any level in the minor leagues and he can play defense and he is young and I feel his hitting will come around as he gets stronger.”

    Like

    1. Canelo was known for his fielding but the bat was suspect. He’ll be 19 in a few days. He started in GCL but was quickly bumped to Wlmspt because of Crawford. I was surprised to see he’s hit .438 in his last 10 games and hit his 1st HR yesterday. He has 8 RBIs in those 10 games and has cut down on Ks in that timeframe. If Crawford starts in Lakewood next year, and I’m pretty sure he will, Canelo will be hung out to dry. He might go to CLW but probably starts in Lakewood as Crawford’s caddie and switches to Wlmsprt when the SS opens. He’s only 4 months older than Crawford.

      Like

    1. A couple reasons. For one, he’s playing a lot of first base and his bat just hasn’t been good enough to be a legit prospect at 1B. Assuming he can play a respectable 3B, he is somewhat interesting. His overall performance this year hasn’t been that good, but since June started he’s been much better. Still, he’s old for Lakewood, so unless he proves that he can hit at higher levels, he’ll never get a lot of attention.

  9. This post will probably get deleted but here it goes:

The Phils lineup in September should be as follows while Brown is out:

    1 Rollins SS
    2 C Hernandez LF
    3 Utley 2B
    4 Ruf RF
    5 Ruiz C
    6 Asche 3B
    7 Franco 1B
    8 Gillies CF
*Galvis should play 2x per week at 2B and SS each, and 1 game per week vs a LHP at 3B.

    And when Brown returns:
    1 Rollins SS
2 C Hernandez / Gillies CF (split time)
    3 Utley 2B
    4 Brown LF
    5 Ruf RF
    6 Asche 3B
    7 Franco 1B
    8 Ruiz C

    1. Gillies is out with a hamstring injury. Don’t know for how long, but he went on AAA DL, I believe. Certainly wasn’t available for today’s game. I just don’t think the Phillies bring up Franco, but I could be wrong, stranger things have happened.

      Like

    2. Not sure why Utley and Rollins should be playing.
Throw in all the AAAA guys and check on the bench guys in Mayberry and Frandsen who they may not keep. I’d start Rupp most games then bring in Ruiz as PH to work with the relievers.
Hernandez, Utley/Rollins, Brown, Ruf, Asche, Frandsen/Mayberry, Rupp, Gillies/Galvis

  10. Stop it with the Franco being called up talk . . It isn’t going to happen nor should it, makes no sense at all UNLESS they plan on giving him a shot at winning a job out of ST which isn’t going to happen either.

      1. Losing an option is not unimportant, you just don’t know what happens down the road, injury-wise etc. You don’t just throw a chip away for nothing. The bigger problem, however, is putting Franco on the 40-man, when it’s not necessary, means another guy who would have been protected this winter gets exposed to the Rule 5 draft.

    1. RAJ has been quoted as saying that he envisions Asche and Franco battling it out for the starting third base in spring training.

  11. Also I know that it’s a really SSS but does the way Crawfords been hitting bother anyone? IMO it’s just that baseball is a game of slumps and he was going to get into one eventually which is what’s going on now. Still would have been nice to see him end the year like he was hitting before he got promoted.

    Like

    1. An 18 year old SS, who was drafted in June, was double jumped, has a BB% at 12.5% and a K% at 14.3% and you’re bothered by how he’s been hitting? Of course it’s a SSS but come on man.

      Like

    2. Not even a little bit. I think his batting average dropped like .030 points yesterday because of his 0-fer. He still has only 8 Ks to 7 BBs in Lakewood and that’s much more meaningful than his overall line. In fact, what’s even more meaningful is that they sent him to Lakewood in the first place.

      Like

    3. The point of sending him to Lakewood was to give him a taste of what he’s in for next year. His early performance there suggests he’s not going to be overmatched, even with his recent struggles. In fact, I think finishing on a cold streak might be beneficial in the long-run — he’s certainly not going to underestimate the challenge with which he’ll be presented next season.

      Like

  12. HaHa why bc I think he’s in a small slump right now? Bc I would have liked to see him end his season the way he started it? Man you are so right, he’s not in a slump and its good that he’s ending the season on a cold note instead of being hot. What was I thinking? Good God!!! HaHaHa.

  13. Rassmussen looks like a possible MLB lefty reliever. We could use that. Off-season should, among other things, be concerned with fixing the relief corps. Does Bastardo stay? Dieckman has been looking better so the ST competition to locate maybe 3 lefties for the pen should be interesting.

    1. he is non prospect at that point. Why would you want to rush that realization…if its true. He will be given atleast another year maybe two.

      Like

      1. His prospect status takes a hit if he is switched to position player at this stage, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing for him. The Pirates did it with Stetson Allie after just two seasons. If Gueller is the hitter he was projected to be, coming out of HS, he could get himself back on pace in two years.

        Like

  14. Wonder as a hitter, where gueller would have went in the draft, if before draft he said like gose did, he wanted to hit not pitch, would he still be drafted as high??

  15. ,Maybe someone could explain to me . ruf is 28 years old, and he is sitting against tough right hand pitching for who?? makes no sense. if he cant hit tough pitcher, then they better go get a guy who can. second game he is sitting, sidewinder the other day and strasburg tonight. joke. I really think they better look for a right hand bat, a rbi guy, even if they have to move lee.

    1. I took note of that also. he is not 23 like Asche. Actually I think we need an off season signing of a right handed hitting corner outfielder
