GCL, FSL, and Biddle; August 13, 2014

I attended my first GCL game in several weeks today.  Denton Keys pitched a solid 5 innings against the GCL Pirates.  He scattered 5 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batter allowing 2 runs, only one of them earned.  The defense was a little shaky all day.  The 3 errors charged were a little generous.  A couple more could have been charged.

Austin Davis and undrafted free agent Kyle Bogese combined to pitch the final 4 innings.  Davis allowed 3 hits in 2.1 innings but was aided by a pick off and a caught stealing.  Bogese got the win with 1.2 innings of no-hit ball.  Each reliever recorded 3 strikes out.  The Phillies won 3-2. Crawford Clubs Cubs; August 8, 2014

J.P. Crawford belted 2 home runs as he went 3 for 4 with a stolen base to lead the Threshers to an 8-7 victory over the Daytona Cubs.  Crawford’s 2 home runs sailed over the Oakley sign in right field for those familiar with Bright House Field.  The first cleared the back fence and left the stadium. Nunez Stifles Cubs, Threshers Lose, Yada Yada, Biddle; August 5, 2014

Miguel Nunez pitched another gem tonight, and the Threshers lost 3-1.  Nunez faced a Daytona line up that featured 3 through 6 hitters – Kyle Schwarber (#4 overall in 2014), Dan Vogelbach, Rock Shoulders, and Bill McKinney (#24 overall in 2013).  They are all built like blocks of granite and all bat left-handed.  Vogelbach and Shoulders have combined for 27 home runs in the FSL this year.  Nunez’ line was – Continue reading Nunez Stifles Cubs, Threshers Lose, Yada Yada, Biddle; August 5, 2014 →

Mets Drub Threshers; August 4, 2014

Nic Hanson made his first start of the season with the Threshers after 3 rehab starts in the GCL where he pitched 5 hitless innings in his last appearance. Hanson pitched well in Lakewood last season before being promoted to Clearwater for 5 so-so August starts. He’s tall at 6’7 and features 3 pitches – a high 80s fastball that ranges from 86-90, a change up, and a slider. Leiter Struggles Against Mets; August 1, 2014

The Threshers 3 game winning streak came to an end when they returned home Friday night. Mark Leiter was coming off 2 solid starts where he had allowed only 2 runs in 16 innings, one his complete game shutout of Charlotte on July 20th. Nola/Quinn Lead Assault on Fort Myers; July 31, 2014

Aaron Nola 2-hit the Miracle through 5 innings and the Threshers scored 9 runs in the second and third innings as Clearwater beat Fort Myers and took the series against the FSL South, first half division champions, three games to one. In the process, they helped drop the Miracle into a second place tie in the second half standings.

Aaron Nola pitched another good game. He allowed one run on 2 hits and a walk. He threw 73 pitches, 47 for strikes. He relied heavily on his fast ball, throwing predominantly 2- and 4- seam fastballs through the first 3 innings. Crabs beat Threshers; July 22, 2014

The Threshers were stymied in their attempt to take the third game of the four game series against the Stone Crabs. Jeb Stuart started and did a KK impersonation, allowing 3 runs on 1 hit in the first inning. The Threshers rallied for 4 runs in the fifth inning to tie the game but Stefan and Ethan Stewart combined to surrender 3 runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Crabs held on for a 7-5 victory.

Stefan has struggled in the first inning this season. Going into his 12th start, his first inning ERA was 14.34. After tonight’s first inning he had pitched 11.2 first innings and allowed 20 earned runs, raising his first inning ERA to 15.42. Guth Guts Crabs; July 21, 2014

A day after Mark Leiter shut out the Charlotte Stone Crabs; Jordan Guth pitched 6 strong innings in his longest outing of the season. Guth and 2 of the 3 pitchers who relieved him pitched the Threshers to a 4-3 victory. Art Charles and Brian Pointer provided the offense.

Jordan Guth had been used primarily as a reliever since his call-up to Clearwater last season. He posted a 3-3 record and 6.28 ERA in 26 appearances in 2013. Guth had made 24 relief appearances before making his first start this year on July 4th at Dunedin. He pitched 4 innings and didn’t figure in the decision. The arrival of Cliff Lee for rehab temporarily squeezed Guth out of the rotation. He pitched a hitless 3 innings against Palm Beach on July 13th. Continue reading Guth Guts Crabs; July 21, 2014 →

Staying optimistic about the future in center field

In what has been a disappointing 2014 season for the Phillies, one thing has become abundantly clear: the team’s future in the outfield is muddled. Ben Revere, Domonic Brown, and Marlon Byrd have struggled as a unit, and out of those three guys, the only one who has provided much of anything may not be here past July 31.

Brown’s problems are another story for another day, and Byrd’s story may be written over the next few weeks if Ruben Amaro, Jr. finds a taker for the right fielder.

There is one big question here: What is the team’s future in center field? Set aside Brown for a second. Forget about Byrd. Just block the corner outfield out of your mind. Where does this team plan to go in center field?

Threshers; June 8, 2014

We’ve all heard the term “a heartbreaking loss”. Well, if there is such a thing as a “heartbreaking win”, the Threshers put their fans through one this afternoon. Actually, heart wrenching or gut wrenching are probably better descriptive terms

The Threshers hitters were facing a young hurler making his Florida State League debut for the Daytona Cubs. Right hander, Justin Amlung, was 4-0 with an ERA of 1.54 with Kane County in A ball. It seems that most of the games I cover, the Threshers run into guys with sub 3.00 ERAs who shut them down, or plus 4.00 ERAs who pitch their game of the season. Not today.
