Threshers Drop Home Opener 5-2; April 9, 2015

The Threshers opened the 2015 season with a home loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays.  The game featured two rehabbing major leaguers, Michael Saunders as DH for the Blue Jays and Domonic Brown in RF for the Threshers.  Neither figured in the scoring.

These are not the Matt Boyd/Dalton Pompey/Dwight Smith Blue Jays that were so dominant in the FSL last season.  But they have restocked with prospects Mitch Nay (#11), Dawel Lugo (#18), and Matthew Dean (#19) who each hit opposite field home runs.  Pitcher Jairo Labourt (#13) stymied the Threshers thru the first four innings before tiring in the fifth and sixth innings.  The left-handed pitcher struck out Domonic Brown swinging in his only two ABs. Florida Instructional League Game #6; 9/27/2014

The Phillies and Orioles faced off in an Instructional League game this morning. It ended in a 1-1 tie after nine innings. The Orioles managed 2 hits, one an infield single, and scored an unearned run on a hit batsman, error catching a pickoff throw, and another error on a throw to try and get the runner at third. The Phillies amassed 4 hits, one an infield single, and scored their run on an Andrew Knapp ground out after Williams Astudillo singled to right and moved to third on a passed ball and a balk. Threshers; June 1, 2014

We were treated to another pitchers’ duel today. Ethan Stewart and Bradenton’s Jason Creasy battled for 6 innings. Stewart blinked first allowing a 5th inning run. They completed the 6th inning with the Marauders protecting a 1-0 lead.  After a short rain delay, the bullpens took over. Both pens combined to allow 6 runs in the 7th inning.  They settled down and closed out the final two innings without any further scoring.

Threshers; May 29, 2014

This game followed what is becoming a familiar theme as some of the starting pitchers improve. Starter pitches well. Offense struggles. Defense plays unevenly. Threshers lose. Tonight, the victim was Jeb Stefan. He pitched a season high 6 innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 unearned run, 2 walks, 2 strike outs, and 1 wild pitch. He left trailing 1-0. One other bright spot was Lino Martinez. He enetered the 8th inning with one out and the bases loaded. Miguel Gonzalez Begins Rehab with Threshers

Miguel Gonzalez was activated today and began his Major League Rehab Assignment.  He started for the Threshers and was less than impressive.  I went down to the bullpen to watch his pre-game warmups.  It wasn’t pretty.  He was consistently high with most of his pitches.  At one point, the pitching coach (Bob Milacki, I think) stopped him to pantomine a delivery and release.  A few pitches later, Gonzalez launched a wild pitch that Logan Moore could barely get leather on.  The ball rattled around in the walkway and eventually rolled through the open door into left field.

Threshers; May 13, 2014

Brody Colvin started his third game since joining the Threshers.   He struggled with his control all night.  Most of his pitches looked like they were high.   Even his strikes looked like they were up in the zone as he threw 39 strikes and 36 balls.   He pitched from behind on most batters, only throwing 4 first-pitch strikes.

Colvin lasted 3.2 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 4 walks.   His 1 strike out came on the third out of the first inning with 2 runners on base as he ended a Hammerhead threat. Continue reading Threshers; May 13, 2014 →

Threshers; May 12, 2014

The Threshers hosted the Jupiter Hammerheads tonight.  Colin Kleven got the start and pitched well.  Even though he was roughed up for 3 runs in the 1st inning, he was in command of his pitches.  He threw 27 pitches in the first, but 20 were strikes, and 6 of the 7 batters were faced with first pitch strikes.  Kleven settled down and pitched 6 more solid, scoreless innings.
