According to Todd Zolecki’s twitter, Freddy Galvis has been promoted to AA Reading. The reasoning for this escapse my grasp. Even if you concede that Galvis is a defensive wiz, he’s only 19, and he wasn’t hitting all that much in the FSL, where he was 2 years younger than the average prospect. Now he moves to AA, making one of the biggest jumps for a hitter, from A ball to AA. Your guess is as good (or better) as mine.
As I mentioned in the box score roundup, I’m intrigued by Leandro Castro. I don’t know much about his backstory, I just know he was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic. He made his US debut last year in the GCL at age 19, a year or two later than most big time Latin American prospects. His line for the season didn’t look particularly impressive; .298/.317/.422 with 9 2B, 3 HR and 9 SB, but only 4 BB and 25 K in 161 AB. He struggled at Lakewood before being placed back in the NYPL where he’s compiled an impressive batting line; .357/.395/.585 with 14 2B, 5 HR, and 12 SB, with a 25/9 K to BB ratio in 171 AB thus far. The power spike is notable, and though he’s been caught stealing 9 times, he obviously does have some speed. So seeing an intriguing guy who I didn’t know much about, I got in touch with a good friend of this website, Kevin Goldstein over at Baseball Prospectus and asked him if he had any good info on Castro. Check below the fold for his brief report
The Phillies 2007 first round draft choice, Joe Savery, was called up from AA Reading to take a place in the Lehigh Valley rotation. Savery, 23, was taken 19th overall of the 2007 draft out of Rice University with the 19th pick in the draft. After a dominant first half of the year, during which he went 12-1, Savery has struggled during his last several outings, going 1-3 with a 8.71 ERA in his last 4 starts. On the year, Savery is 12-4 with a 4.41 ERA in 21 starts. He has walked 53 and struck out 77 in his 112.1 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .262 against him (just .183 with RISP) and he has given up 13 home run balls. Continue reading Daily Discussion, Savery Called Up to AAA
Well, so far the month of July has not been kind to the Clearwater Threshers. The team has a 4-7 record on the month, and has been outscored by a margin of 78-38. The team went scoreless in four consecutive games from July 6th to the 9th, although one of the games was called due to rain after 3.5 innings of play. (Over that four game streak the team was outscored 29-0.)
The team had ended the month of June on a hot streak winning the final six of the month, and then won the first two of July to extend their winning streak to eight games. Unfortunately since that time the team has fallen on hard times losing seven of the last nine games by an average margin of nearly eight runs.
Some good news can come from the fact that Freddy Galvis has returned to action playing with the Gulf Coast League team, and has hit .400 in four games. It is expected that Galvis will return to the Threshers roster when the team returns to action at home after the MLB All-Star break this coming Wednesday night.
Needless to say it has been the pitching staff that has suffered the most for the Threshers lately, although the offense has been mediocre at best.
Seems like a new article pops up every day talking about what he will or won’t be. The latest from Marcus Hayes is here.
As someone who has backed Savery when everyone else turned on him and suggested he was bust, its nice to see that he’s altered his way of thinking at least. He’s still got another season after this one before he has to be protected on the 40 man roster, and if he stays in shape and focuses on his command and control, he’ll still be a starting pitcher for the big club at some point. The Phillies gambled with that pick. They knew that if he rebounded 100% from surgery, he’d be one of the steals of the draft at 19. He obviously hasn’t come back to what he was as a freshman, so it looks like a “failed gamble”, but if you look at the rest of the first round, we didn’t pass up on a can’t miss guy to take him other than Porcello, who we had no interest in paying for. Tim Alderson would have been a nice pick, Chris Withrow too, but that draft class looks kind of sketchy right now after the top 10 picks or so.
I hope Savery can maintain his focus and sharpen his pitches. We can still use him.
West coast trip. I’m going to attempt to focus on Bastardo’s raw stuff tonight, as well as his mechanics and what I see. I’ll update this post during the game. Discuss his start here.
Here is the Gameday link, which will allow you to see his velocity and the break of his pitches.
Im going to put a break in here, and I’ll start updates below that.
First off, apologies for having not cranked out A Closer Look piece in a little bit, though big thanks to governator for his interesting piece on Matt German in the meantime. Not sure if I’ll have a chance to write anything before I head on vacation this weekend, but I’ll definitely be back at it when I get back.
In the meantime, the system got some pub from both BA and BP today. Check below the jump for the goods.
No, it wasn’t quite the banner day that last Tuesday was, but Saturday night was still an impressive night for 3 of the 4 minor league pitchers who took the bump in the Phillies organization.
Reading: Antonio Bastardo (5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K)
Clearwater: Yohan Flande (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K)
Lakewood: Tyler Cloyd (7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K)
Moved back to the rotation from the bullpen, Bastardo responded with 5 frames of no hit ball before being lifted, presumably for reaching his pitch count. The 23-year old Flande, meanwhile, ran his scoreless streak to 18 innings after jumping straight to the FSL from the GCL, and Cloyd turned in perhaps his finest outing as a professional in the BlueClaws’ 1-0 win.
Obviously this trio isn’t nearly the caliber of prospect as the Carrasco/Drabek/Knapp group, but they certainly have a future if they continue the path they’re on this year. Now if only those bats would warm up a bit…
Things in Clearwater have looked pretty sunny through the first four games of the season, despite the fact that Tuesday night’s game was rained out. The team is loaded with talent this season, including seven of the Phuture Phillies Top 30 Prospects plus three players listed as near misses. The team’s new manager Ernie Whitt is a night and day difference from the 2008 manger Razor Shines (with Shine playing the part of night), and the team’s 3-1 record is the best of any Phillies minor league team so far in this young season.
