Day 4. So, a Saturday schedule is the same as the week day schedule … this week. Position players came out at 9:30 AM and after stretching, they started BP at 9:50 AM. While the stretching was taking place on Ashburn Field, a group of pitchers came out on Rollins Field and went threw some of their non-throwing exercises. Day 3. Happy Valentines’s Day, y’all. I arrived at the Complex at 8:30 AM. Learned that the position players would come out at 9:50 AM and that the minor league mini-camp was moving back to the Complex with a 1:00 PM start.
While mingling with security and the other early arrivals, I could see a group of pitchers on Rollins Field going through their towel throwing exercise. A short time later the early reporting position players came out of the club house and began stretching in left field on Ashburn Field. Day 2. I arrived at the Complex at 8:30 AM. Earlier than the workouts were scheduled to start, but last year the coaches had players out as early as 8:00 AM and sometimes earlier on the half-field in front of Spectrum Field. A field I used to refer to as Bowa Field, but which I have recently started referring to as Rollins Field. Continue reading Spring Training, Pitchers and Catchers, 2/13/2020
Today marked the beginning of my ninth Philiies’ spring training. Pitchers and catchers were scheduled to come out at 11:00 AM, so I was there at 9:00 AM.
Since a lot of position players were among the early reports, they came out at 9:30 AM and performed their stretching exercises before breaking up on Ashburn, Schmidt, and Roberts Fields for BP. The groups batted for about 15 minutes and had coaches and instructors on each field. Continue reading Spring Training, Pitchers and Catchers, 2/12/2020
More new faces. Monday, we spotted pitchers Addison Russ, Vince Velasquez, Ranger Suarez, Damon Jones, Andrew Brown, Ramon Rosso, Deolis Guerra, and position players Mickey Moniak, Adam Haseley, Scott Kingery, Austin Listi, Darick Hall, Luke Williams, Grenny Cumana, Henri Lartigue, and Coach Bob Meacham.
There are probably a few more here, I just didn’t see them. One noticeable face I have seen is the new manager. I imagine he was inside meeting with staff and getting acclimated to the Complex. (Note that the Complex includes Spectrum Field. I have developed the habit of referring to just the four minor league fields at the Paul Owens Training Facility as the Complex. I’m probably not going to change.) Continue reading Spring Training Update, 2/10/2020
More bullpens Friday, twenty-three!
Now, my last weekend off. Then, players begin arriving on Monday. Pitchers and catchers take their physicals Tuesday. And, spring training officially opens on Wednesday.
Baseball nirvana on a Tuesday in February, 19 pitchers throwing bullpens.
Today’s new faces include Andrew Knapp, Edgar Garcia, Zach Eflin, Adonis Medina, and Austin Davis. Coach Ernie Whitt has also arrived. And, Rafael Chaves has also been here, I neglected to mention him earlier. Continue reading Spring Training Update, More Bullpens, 2/4/2020

More players have arrived at the Carpenter Complex this week, a few more catchers and a lot of pitchers. In addition, to their daily routine of weight, exercises, tossing, and running, some position players are taking ground balls and batting practice. A cold snap ripped through Florida today. It was 49 degrees when I climbed into my car to drive to the Complex … in shorts, because I’m not a native Floridian. And, it was bound to warm up. It did, a little. Starting times still fluctuate a little, but arriving around 9:00 AM is good practice for spring training. Continue reading Spring Training Update, 1/20/2020
