Activities started around 10:00 AM Saturday morning. Players from major league camp came out and took BP on Ashburn Field. Minor league catchers began their day with BP on Carlton Field. I watched a little of each, waiting for some scheduled pitching on Roberts Field. Victor Arano was first on the mound. He threw a simulated inning, facing Cornelius Randolph and Matt Vierling twice each. Continue reading Spring Training, Minor League, Mar 7, 2020
(Edited 3/6/2020 at 9:30 AM – Players on the roster whom I have actually seen in camp are noted in bold red text. )
The Phillies began their minor league spring training on Wednesday with their full squad at 2:00 PM. Position players trekked over to the fields at DiMaggio Park. Catchers took BP on Carlton and Roberts Fields. Afterward, they ran through several fielding drills – pop ups and throws to bases among others. During these drills, 45 pitchers began stretching in the outfields. Another 45 pitchers were on Schmidt preparing to throw from the Seven Mounds. The pitchers on Carlton and Roberts were still running PFPs when I left at 4:30 PM. I learned today that they were still on the fields at 5:00 PM. Here is some more video from Sunday’s scrimmage. The pitchers are Arrieta, Dominguez, Medina, Morgan, and Sanchez. Batters include Stott, Muzziotti, Bruce, Garcia, Rojas, Guzman, and Randolph. Continue reading Spring Training, 3/2/2020
The Phillies bolted out to a 6-1-1 record in Grapefruit League games. The play during the games is more important than the scores and victories. More than 30 players from the minor league mini camp have been assigned to the games. Those among them who have gotten playing time, as well as others of their minor league brethren who were among the non-roster invites have acquitted themselves well. Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of March 2nd
With the Phillies on the road in Fort Myers, the minor league players in town for their mini camp were able to begin practice at 10:00 AM on multiple Complex fields. Of more importance, the minor league spring training game schedule was finally made available. Continue reading Spring Training, 2/26/2020; Minor League ST Game Schedule
Day 4. So, a Saturday schedule is the same as the week day schedule … this week. Position players came out at 9:30 AM and after stretching, they started BP at 9:50 AM. While the stretching was taking place on Ashburn Field, a group of pitchers came out on Rollins Field and went threw some of their non-throwing exercises. Continue reading Spring Training, Pitchers and Catchers, 2/15/2020
Day 3. Happy Valentines’s Day, y’all. I arrived at the Complex at 8:30 AM. Learned that the position players would come out at 9:50 AM and that the minor league mini-camp was moving back to the Complex with a 1:00 PM start.
While mingling with security and the other early arrivals, I could see a group of pitchers on Rollins Field going through their towel throwing exercise. A short time later the early reporting position players came out of the club house and began stretching in left field on Ashburn Field. Continue reading Spring Training, Pitchers and Catchers, 2/14/2020
Day 2. I arrived at the Complex at 8:30 AM. Earlier than the workouts were scheduled to start, but last year the coaches had players out as early as 8:00 AM and sometimes earlier on the half-field in front of Spectrum Field. A field I used to refer to as Bowa Field, but which I have recently started referring to as Rollins Field. Continue reading Spring Training, Pitchers and Catchers, 2/13/2020
Today marked the beginning of my ninth Philiies’ spring training. Pitchers and catchers were scheduled to come out at 11:00 AM, so I was there at 9:00 AM.
Since a lot of position players were among the early reports, they came out at 9:30 AM and performed their stretching exercises before breaking up on Ashburn, Schmidt, and Roberts Fields for BP. The groups batted for about 15 minutes and had coaches and instructors on each field. Continue reading Spring Training, Pitchers and Catchers, 2/12/2020
More new faces. Monday, we spotted pitchers Addison Russ, Vince Velasquez, Ranger Suarez, Damon Jones, Andrew Brown, Ramon Rosso, Deolis Guerra, and position players Mickey Moniak, Adam Haseley, Scott Kingery, Austin Listi, Darick Hall, Luke Williams, Grenny Cumana, Henri Lartigue, and Coach Bob Meacham.
There are probably a few more here, I just didn’t see them. One noticeable face I have seen is the new manager. I imagine he was inside meeting with staff and getting acclimated to the Complex. (Note that the Complex includes Spectrum Field. I have developed the habit of referring to just the four minor league fields at the Paul Owens Training Facility as the Complex. I’m probably not going to change.) Continue reading Spring Training Update, 2/10/2020
