Phuture Phillies 2016 Reader Top 30 #25

Deivi Grullon was selected the Readers’ Poll 24th prospect.  He received 61 of 331 votes (19% our lowest plurality so far). He finished comfortably ahead of Darnell Sweeney (51 votes, 16%).  It looks like Sweeney and Alberto Tirado will be the favorites in the next poll with Victor Arano close behind.  Tom Windle is the only player to receive votes in every poll.  However he is also suffering the biggest drop, from 9th in last year’s poll to “still falling”. Nick Pivetta was selected the Readers’ Poll 22nd prospect.  He received 91 of 346 votes (26%). He finished comfortably ahead of Jhailyn Ortiz (77 votes, 22%).  Deivi Grullon, Tom Windle, Victor Arano, and Darnell Sweeney with votes in the twenties and between 6-8% of the vote. Malquin Canelo was selected the Readers’ Poll 20th prospect.  He received 85 of 386 votes (22%).  He finished comfortably ahead of Ben Lively (69), and Nick Pivetta (51), and Jhailyn Ortiz (50).   Each received at least 13% of the votes cast. Thomas Eshelman was selected the Readers’ Poll 19th prospect.  He received 80 of 409 votes (19.6%).  It was a close race with Malquin Canelo (63), Ben Lively (51), and Nick Pivetta (46), each receiving over 11% of the votes cast.  All but two of the players listed on the poll received at least one vote (Garcia and Paulino).  Five write-in votes were cast (K. Jimmy Cordero was selected the Readers’ Poll 18th prospect.  He received 100 of 391 votes (25.6%).  He out distanced a closely bunched group of three who contended for second place – Malquin Canelo (48), Nick Pivetta (48), Thomas Eshelman (45). Weekend Discussion, January 29, 2016; MLB Top 100

MLB announced their top 100 prospects tonight.  Seven players from the Phillies’ organization made the list.  Since I’m sure this will generate some discussion, here are our seven top prospects and a place to discuss.

  • #5      SS, J.P. Crawford
  • #55   RHP, Jake Thompson
  • #64   OF, Nick Williams
  • #70   RHP, Mark Appel
  • #84   OF, Cornelius Randolph
  • #96   C/1B, Jorge Alfaro
  • #99   OF, Roman Quinn

Crawford still at #5.  Quinn was not ranked in 2015.  Randolph moved up one slot from #85 to #84.  The others dropped slots, some significantly – Appel from #43 to #70, Thompson from #51 to #55, Williams from #55 to #64, Alfaro from #59 to #96.

Adonis Medina was selected the Readers’ Poll 17th prospect.  He received 165 of 380 votes (43%).  He was a runaway victor over second-place finisher Jimmy Cordero.

Tyler Goeddel was selected the Readers’ Poll 16th prospect.  He received 121 of 408 votes (30%).  He finished 8 votes ahead of Adonis Medina.

Goeddel was selected out of high school by Tampa with the 41st pick of the first round, a Comp A pick, of the 2011 First Year Player Draft.  He signed on August 15th of that summer.  He began his pro career in full season A ball at Bowling Green of the Midwest League as a 19-year old, the equivalent of Lakewood.
