Threshers Recap – 7/9/2019

Bryson Stott and Marcus Lee Sang made their long-awaited debuts Tuesday.  Stott homered in his first plate appearance, and walked in his second at bat.  Lee Sang walked in his first plate appearance and stole second.  Later, he stroked an RBI single to center for his first hit and stole second on a pick off attempt.

The Phillies signed another pitcher from this years Rule 4 class.

DJ Jefferson is a non-drafted free agent out of Desert Oasis High School (NV).  He’s a tall, thin RHP, 6’5, 185.  He’s 18, born January 9, 2001.  I can’t recall any other NDFA the Phillies have ever signed out of high school.  It’ll be interesting to see if he’s assigned to a roster or held back as a future sign.  I first noticed him at the Complex last week.

He was identified in MLB’s draft tracker as DJ Figgins-Jefferson.  He’s from Las Vegas and appears to know Bryson Stott.  Perfect Game lists him as a RHP/1B.  Here’s their scouting report on Jefferson.

DJ Jefferson is a 2019 RHP/1B with a 6-5 185 lb. frame from Las Vegas, NV who attends Desert Oasis HS. Very long and slender build, lots of physical projection. Extremely long and deep arm action, high 3/4’s arm slot, rhythmic delivery with some energy on release, full extension out front, big angle to the plate. Primary fastball pitcher, topped out at 92 mph with lots more there and extension gives him additional velocity, fastball is mostly straight but thrown for strikes and is kept down in the zone. Curveball was much improved since last summer and can be mixed in more, also flashed a change up. High ceiling arm who is still developing skills. Verbal commitment to Southern California.

Clearwater (13-9, 49-39)   beat Palm Beach, 7-3.

Julian Garcia pitched six ininngs,  He gave up 3 runs (all in the third inning) on 4 hits and 2 walks.  He struck out five.  Austin Ross struck out 4 in two clean innings.  Zach Warren pitched a perfect inning.

The Threshers opened the scoring with Danny Mayer’s solo HR (9) in the first inning.  They added a run in the second on Jhailyn Ortiz’ bases loaded walk.  They retook the lead with 3 runs in the third on Daniel Brito’s 3-run triple.  The added another run in the fourth on Simon Muzziotti’s sac fly.  And, they picked up an insurance run in the sixth on Nick Maton’s solo HR (5).

The Crosscutters score 2 runs in the second inning on Nicolas Torres’ RBI bunt base hit and Hunter Markwardt’s sac fly.  They scored a run in the fifth on Markwardt’s second sac fly.  They scored 2 runs in the eighth on Juan Aparicio’s solo HR (1) and a wild pitch.  And a run in the ninth on a fielding error.

Markwardt (.292)went 2-2 with a run scored, 2 RBI, and 2 sac flies.  Corbin Williams stole 2 bases boosting his total to eleven.

GCL Phillies East (5-5)  beat Yankees West, 7-3.

Carlos Betancourt pitched four innings and gave up 2 runs (1 ER) on 4 hits.  He walked none and struck out four.  He threw his fastball 91-93 mph.  Maikel Garrido gave up one run in two innings on one hit and 3 walks.  His fastball was 89-91, t92 mph.  Jose Ulloa struck out two in one inning.  His fastball was 93-94, t95 mph.

Lee Sang stole 2 bases.  One after his second inning walk.  The other after his single when the pitcher caught him leaning and picked him off.  He raced to second and beat the tag.  He also showed a strong arm on a couple throws from deep center field.

GCL Phillies West (8-2)  beat Yankees West, 8-7.

Erik Miller struck out four in two innings.  He also gave up a run 2 walks and a hit.  Fernando Lozano struck out four in three clean innings.  Juan Miranda struck out three in two innings.  Riley Wilson pitched two scoreless innings.

Wingrove went 3-5 with a run scored, HR (3), and  3 RBI.

Brandon Ramsey was removed from Monday’s game in the first inning after five batters.  This was noy because of injury.  The Phillies have a pitch count policy.  If a pitcher reaches 24 pitches in an inning, he is relieved.  That’s what happened to Ramey on Monday.

  1. Great to see Stott start off with a hr then a walk.
Wingrove is one huge man. I hope that power and hit tool continues to grow.

First time I saw both Dsl teams have both solid pitchers and hitters. I think theres some real talent there.

    1. The DSL Teams have guys with 3 of the 5 best ERAs: Puello, Urias and Lopez. Puello is 18 and pitched in DSL last year. His problem last year was BBs and he’s seemed to straighten that out. His Whip this year is .87. Urias is also 18. He gave up a lot of hits last year and he’s cut down on those this year. He’s 6’6″ so he probably needed to grow into his body. His Whip is a stellar .72. Lopez is 19 but he was signed this year. Might be a late bloomer. He limits hits and keeps his BBs down. His Whip is .95. The DSL teams success can be more tied to pitching than hitting. Their team BAs, OPS, OBP are middle to low in the Team Batting. They have some very nice hitters on both teams

    1. Interesting observation….though perhaps the Las Vegas Philly connection was enticing for him…..recent number one pick Bryson Stott went to the same HS as he did, and of course he probably has run into Bryce Harper a few times at the baseball training academies out there in Vegas area.

    2. Lots of potential reasons – cost (he was committed to USC, but presumably w/ a partial scholarship, at best); he may really not be interested in college life (USC MIGHT require him to go to classes for three years…); he may have reasoned that college pitchers have high rates of breakdown – not all promising HS pitchers who go to college survive to be drafted three years later.

There’s an argument to be made that a club should draft college hitters, HS pitchers – because college hitters are more developed, but college pitchers have often been abused, and are arm implosions in waiting. Not universally true, but to the extent it is true, smart HS pitchers might conclude their odds are better going pro.

      1. I liked the whole (Coach) Stolte/(Bryson) Stott alliteration thing. Reminds me of the Flyers Hextall/Hackstol situation.

  3. Could have been found out he was not going to be eligible and didnt want to do the JuCo thing?

    1. They are home tomorrow vs Thunder for 4 games…assume he will go at some point in that series…..then they travel to Bing. for three days and then back home next Thursday…..but being more safe than sorry, they could also sit him out until the 18th.

      1. Don’t be alarmed if they don’t rush him back. Might be a little more than just a tweak. He might need a few more days past his eligibility to be activated.off the IL.

  5. Jamari Baylor had his first two hits (also BB’ed) as a Phillies prospect today. One was a double. Rixon Wingrove also had a double to continue his torrid start to the 2019 season.

  6. Anyone realize that Tyler Carr had 19 shutout innings in a row before giving up a homerun to lead off the 4th inning today in the rain? His numbers are very good. Is he a prospect?

  7. I’ve seen DJ Jefferson play multiple times. He was a big prospect heading into junior year — according to Perfect Game, he topped out at 93 heading into junior year — then didn’t develop much further. He looks like he should develop further — he’s tall and skinny. Reminds me a bit of Pipkin.

The USC head coach was fired a month ago. A top 2020 commit to USC named Lucas Gordon just decommitted from USC. Jefferson was signed there — and once you sign an NLI you have to sit out a year if you transfer — and the coaching change may have played into his decision.
