Threshers Recap – 8/29/2019

Reading has already locked up a playoff berth.  They still have a chance to win the second half division title.  They are ahead of Trenton by 3.0 games and play a 4-game series against the Thunder this weekend.  Hartford is 4.0 games back and cannot win or tie for the division title because the two teams ahead of them are playing each other and there is no scenario of wins or cancellations that will propel them to the title. Threshers Recap – 8/28/2019

The Phillies’ Arizona Fall League attendees have been announced.  The Phillies will send six of their top 30 prospects – Alec Bohm 3B/1B (No. 1); Spencer Howard, RHP (No. 4); Mickey Moniak, OF (No. 8); JoJo Romero, LHP (No. 10); Nick Maton, SS/2B (No. 14); Connor Seabold, RHP (No. 30) as part of the Scottsdale Scorpions.  They will join prospects from the Braves, Mets, Giants, and Blue Jays.  The Phillies have to send at least one more pitcher, and may send another player who would be on a taxi squad.  If Spencer Howard is promoted to the Phillies, he will likely be replaced on the Scottsdale roster. Threshers Recap – 8/27/2019

Reading lost and Trenton won.  The Phil’s lead is 2.5 games.  Both teams have 6 games remaining, including 4 with each other in Trenton this weekend.  The elimination number (1) on Reading’s home page can’t be right.  I calculate their magic number to be three.  Hartford lost, so the Phils have clinched the second best record in their division, so they have secured a playoff spot regardless how the division race plays out.

The GCL Phillies West game was cancelled after it was rained out in the top of the fifth inning.  Thant cancellation clinched the division championship.  Both the Phillies and the Tigers West have 4 games remaining.  The Tigers trail by 4.5 games.  Congratulations to The Phillies West! (Note that changes after publication are in red text) updated 9/1, 9/4, 9/26, 9/30, 10/9, 10/31

As baseball teams play their way out of post season contention, the attention of their fans turns to other aspects of baseball.  Some begin to fret over draft position.  Other, more insightful fans, begin to look toward the Rule 5 Draft and the roster maneuvering that precedes it.  One such diversion the Rule 5 Draft provides for me is determining the status of players as the draft draws near. Open Discussion: Week of August 26th

You don’t need me to elaborate on the Phillies recent play.  But, their schedule gets tougher from here on out.  They have seven games against the Pirates (3) and Reds (4), both of whom have better records than the Marlins (haha).  They have five inter-league games against the Red Sox (2) and Indians (3).  They have 18 games against division foes – Mets (6), Braves (7), Nationals (5).  And then, they finish the season with a 3-game series against those pesky Marlins.  Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of August 26th
