Clearwater Threshers Recap – 6/19/2018

The Clearwater Threshers (32-35) beat Bradenton, 5-3.  Adonis Medina had another nice start holding the Marauders to one run in six innings.  He allowed 3 hits and 3 walks, and struck out ten.  Blake Quinn (5.79) gave up one run in two innings.  Ismael Cabrera (7.63) gave up a HR but picked up his second save.

The Threshers scored late.  They took the lead with 3 runs in the seventh on Luke Williams 3-run HR (5).  They added 2 insurance runs in the eighth on two-out, RBI singles by Raul Rivas and Williams.

The bottom third of the order provided the offense.  Rivas (.264) had 2 hits and an RBI. Williams (.232) had 3 hits, a HR, and 4 RBI.  Grenny Cumana had 2 hits and a double.  The rest of the line up had 2 hits.

Henri Lartigue (.265) went 1-1 with 2 runs scored and 3 BB.

  • #1 Sixto Sanchez (4-3 , 2.51): is on the 7-day DL with elbow inflammation
  • #2 Adonis Medina (7-2, 3.99): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 10 K
  • #3 Adam Haseley (.288): went 0-5
  • #4 Mickey Moniak (.254): DNP
  • #8 Arquimedes Gamboa (.261): went 0-3 with a BB, HBP
  • #17 Jose Gomez (.230):
  • #21 McKenzie Mills (0-2, 4.46):
  • #25 J.D. Hammer (1-1, 7.36):

  • Bailey Falter (4-2, 3.08):

The  GCL Phillies West were leading 3-0 against the Yankees East when the game was suspended due to wet grounds.  After a short but heavy downpour, the ground crew convinced the umpires that restarting in 30 minutes wouldn’t make the field any better. After the game was suspended, the sky opened up for another 20 minutes to put an exclamation point on the decision.

The game featured Alec Bohm’s first professional hit.  He jumped on the first pitch he saw and drove it to right field, tight to the line.  The right fielder couldn’t cover the ground to the ball and it bounced to the fence.  He also picked up his first pro RBI as Yermin Trejo scored after working a walk in a ten-pitch at bat after falling behind 0-2.  Bohm scored on Rixon Taylor-Wingrove’s first pro hit, a broken bat single to center.  D.J. Stewart reached on a ground ball back to the pitcher.  His bat shattered on contact and the pitcher dodged pieces of bat before grabbing the ball and hurrying his throw to first.  Wingrove made it to third on the play even though the ball didn’t roll far enough for Stewart to advance.  Wingrove scored on Luis Garcia’s high chop back to the pitcher.

Alec Bohm’s second at bat

Trejo also led off the third with a walk.  He stole second but was caught in no man’s land between bases on a ground ball to the left side by Bohm.  Both were played heads up though as Trejo got in a run down and Bohm never broke stride while gaining second.  Abrahan Guttierez was batting when the umpires finally halted play.

Alejandro Requena made a rehab start for Philies West.  He retired the first six batters including 5 strike outs.  His first batter reached leading off the third with a walk.  The batter, Jose Carrera is generously listed as 5’2.  Requena retired the next three batters.  His FB ranged 91-95 mph.  It sat 93-94 mph.  He also had a high 70’s CB and a low 80s change.

I don’t think Requena would have pitched another inning.  The Phils had a guy warming up during their at bat and before the rain started.

  • Alec Bohm: went 1-2 with a run scored, triple, RBI
  • #24 Luis Garcia: went 0-1 with an RBI

In other action –

Lehigh Valley (41-29) beat Scranton, 7-5.  Enyel De Los Santos went four innings and 94 pitches.  He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, and struck out four.  He gave way to Brandon Leibrandt (3-0, 1.18) who pitched three, shutout innings and picked up the win.  Mark Leiter (4.70) gave up 3 runs in 1.2 innings, and Pedro Beato (4.65) swept in to pick up the one-out save (18), but not before allowing both inherited runners to score.  Good job.

The IronPigs built enough of a lead to survive their bullpen.  They scored 3 runs in the first on a two-run fielding error and an RBI ground out.  They scored 3 more runs in the third on Trevor Plouffe’s 3-run double.  They added an insurance run in the fifth on a throwing error.

Collin Cowgill had 2 hits and scored 3 runs.

33 thoughts on “Clearwater Threshers Recap – 6/19/2018

  1. In addition to De los santos, Edgar Garcia, and Brandon Leibrandt, the Phils will have to protect Adonis Medina on the off-season 40 man roster. Wonder when he gets a promotion to AA ball.

    1. I think it should be considered soon. He’s been throwing well recently. I’d like to see Ranger promoted to AAA and have Adonis go to AA to take his spot. Maybe move Drew Anderson to the bullpen and convert him into another multi-inning relief option.

    2. this will happen eventually, may in <2 weeks. Ranger has a very good FB-CU combo with good command. He might skip AAAif the Phils need LH option from the pen. Although honestly, I think Austin Davis can be a surprise. One of the RH starts (i.e. Lively, Taveras) might be moved for IFA $$ if not included as a throw in as part of a trade. Ranger will eventually move up.

  2. Is it a coincidence that Luke Williams has been on fire since the Phillies went heavy on 3rd Basemen in the draft?

    1. About a month ago, I called out Williams as gone once Scheiner had his fill of A ball. He’s been getting better since. He’s hitting for average. His OBP is above .300 and he’s popped a few extra HRs. I think he started hearing Scheiner’s knocking on the door. The draft, heavy on 3rd baseman, might have been the final knock. He was a 3rd rounder in 2015 with a really nice swing. He’ll be 21 until early August so I understand why the Phils wanted to give him every opportunity to prove himself. In the 2 previous years, he didn’t prove much except he could steal bases (29 SBs against 2 CS last year). This year he has 5 SBs to 4 CS so we can’t call that a plus. As long as he’s hitting the ball, he’s going to be here.

    2. Mike Trout visited him in his dream and told him that it’s now time to fulfill his destiny to be the next Mike Trout and make roccom calm and happy everyday.

    3. Thomas,

Actually, I’m taking full credit. I saw my first Threshers game of the season the day Williams got two hits and started his run. He also hit some hard outs that day.

I didn’t know what to expect of him given his past performance, but he hit the ball solidly, squaring up and showing ability to drive the ball. Let’s hope it lasts.

  3. Vierling and Marchan at the top of the Cutters lineup are doing nicely.

Bossart and Marchan are 2 of the top backstops in the system IMO. Marchan gunned down a base stealer last night and must be pretty mobile having stolen 3 bases himself already. Bossart is said to be possibly the best game caller/farmer we have. Plus he’s been swinging a nice bat lately.

    1. 8mark…..”Bossart is said to be possibly the best game caller/farmer we have”…..farmer?
He knows a thing or two also! :).

      1. A lot of folks thought the catchers of the future were Alfaro and Grullon.

But with the way they are developing, it could turn our to be Bogart and Bacall. Er, I mean Bossart and Cabral.

  4. Gage Canning filled up the stat sheet last night against Williamsport. He had 2 hits, struck out once, was caught stealing, and had an OF assist. He’s not the perfect prospect, but he’s an exciting prospect. I wish we had drafted him.

    1. I am thinking the Phillies decided to go big in their choice with Vierling.
Unless a right handed bat vs a left handed bat was also another factor since most of their top OF prospects are all LHBs

        1. They cant draft sorry. They do well with 23 yrs old who are good until reading. I am at the point now if they don’t do something with klentak I am done until they change gm. Where is the international money we need? Where are all these good prospect who have us ranked high. Middleton is nuts to continue with klentak. Or he doesn’t care. did you see how empty it was last night. Kids are out of school, but this team isn’t fooling anyone, the fans see how bad its going to get with these two morons in control

          1. “Where is the international money we need?”

Are you drunk? Sixto, Adonis, Seranthony, Ranger, Francisco Morales, and Franklyn Kilome would like a word with you.

And we’ve drafted quite well the last few years, except for the top pick (which sucks, yes, but also there’s luck involved).

            1. My running theory is that where Johnny Almaraz and his team are left more or less alone to make the decisions (lower rounds), he’s done spectacularly well — particularly with pitching (Jojo Romero, Cole Irvin, Parkinson, Russ, Dohy, etc) but also with guys like Jake Scheiner and Nick Maton.

The too-many-cooks picks up at the top of the draft, where ownership and old hands like Charlie Manuel etc are weighing in, seem to be the worst.

            2. @dlhunter – roccom is probably referring to the big $$ IFA signing. The Phils only have one big $$ IFA in Jhailyn Ortiz in 2015 – the one you forgot to mention. Among the names you mentioned, Francisco Morales received $900K in 2016 which is not significant compared to the top IFA prospects. The rest of the names you mentioned are low $$ signees.

The Phils has been consistent with their IFA strategy of spreading the IFA$$ across multiple signees. Klentak called this as buying lottery tickets. The more the higher chances to hit.

However, things changed when Middleton comes to power. Starting with the Dominican Academy and having 2 DSL teams and spending $2.5M to sign Luis Garcia and possibly similar amount to sign Starlyn Castro.

            3. Heard this story before Jlhunter. quite well? Only Seranthony looks like a keeper. the rest are just like the hype we heard on Altheer, who stinks, When they come up and do something I will say I am wrong. but so far the great crop of talent from our system , like altheer, Knapp. Walding. Neris, The great Kingery. Franco stink.

  5. C – is having a rough go. I remember reading an article last year about him, on him figuring things out… doesn’t look like it. Hoping he can turn around just for himself. Every time I see his box score I feel like it is an 0-fer with a Walk.

    1. It’s pretty unusual for a younger prospect to have a good year at Clearwater and then sort of tank at Reading. Reading is where prospects tend to blossom before being really challenged again at AAA. This is not good news for Cornelius at all. Not a really great year yet for our guys drafted in the top 10 but a great year so far for Dallas Baptist alumni.

      1. C doesn’t look like he’ll make it. Hall and List however, plus Bossart, are all making people take notice. Watch Reading’s lineup take off. Unfortunately Clearwater’s lineup is going to feel the loss of Dallas Baptist. MM will be back soon and Scheiner might be up soon but they lack the big bat now, unless Haseley steps up (before he also leaves). Medina should be going to Reading soon. Promotions will continue after the ASGs finish. Some of Lakewood’s rotation will go south but which ones?

        1. LWD’s rotation is pitching so well that everybody deserves promotion. But we know that’s impossible but most likely to be promoted are:

          1) Rosso – due to age and stats.
          2) Parkinson – due to age and stats
          3) Howard – Phils might want to challenge him

Will Stewart is having a breakout year. He is still young compared to the 3 prospects above, so his promotion may need to wait.

    1. Cozens was on the bench in Philly last night, although still on the DL. He’ll go back to LHV shortly, there’s no roster spot in Philly for him.
Jim – any Quinn activity? Is he around? Is he hitting yet?

      1. They were probably just waiting to make sure Williams passed concussion protocol today to option him out.

  6. I am going to go out on a limb and say that Nick Fanti’s start today was not his finest as a professional. I have been high on his ability to pitch. Now I am anxious to see how he responds to getting whacked around.
