Savery Moved to the Bullpen

As first reported by Jeff Schuler, the IronPigs beat writer for the Morning Call, former first round draft pick Joe Savery has been relgated to the bullpen by Lehigh Valley, with Brandon Duckworth to take his spot in the rotation.  Savery has made four relief appearances in his professional career and each of the four have come on the heels of early inning rehabs by Phils on the DL.

Savery has had a major problem in the first inning of almost every appearance this year, with an ERA now topping 9.00 in the opening frame.  In fact, as Schuler notes, Savery has an ERA over 9.00 in the first two innings of his 13 starts, with an atrocious WHIP of 2.16.  The hope is the work in the bullpen will help resolve the issues in the first few innings of games.

Brown and Cosart headed to the Futures Game

UAS roster is here, the world roster is here.

Jarred Cosart Low Class A Lakewood (SAL)
Noted as a two-way player as an amateur, Cosart has blossomed since
focusing on the mound and now dials his fastball up to 96 mph. He’s
just 20 and in his first full season, but Cosart could move quickly.

Domonic Brown, of Double-A Reading (EL)
Brown’s tools put him among the best prospects in the minors, with his ability to hit for average and speed rating as his best tools. He should be ready for the Philadelphia outfield by next season.

Scott Mathieson designated for assignment

According to Todd Zolecki. Who doesn’t normally make up nonsense.

Unless the Phillies have a trade lined up for him, and the team just wanted to make sure he was healthy (hence, him pitching last night), this move makes absolutely no sense at all.

Thanks for the memories Scott, we wish you well.

Update —>; If this is truly a 40 man roster issue, wouldnt you rather risk losing Drew Carpenter, at best a fringe swingman, instead of a guy who throws 96? And why not move Ryan Madson to the 60 day DL?

This makes no sense at all.

Update #2 –> Here is the explanation. Weird.

Overbeck Promoted

Just a very quick note that Cody Overbeck was promoted from Clearwater to Reading the Reading Phillies announced today. Overbeck, 24, was hitting .302/.380/.553 with 11 HR and 41 RBI in 215 AB’s with Clearwater and is coming off a Florida State League All Star appearance.

Q and A with Cosart and Colvin

I know most of you are wrapped up in draft mania right now so I thought I would distract you with another column idea.  I will be the middle man in a Q and A with Jarred Cosart and Brody Colvin.  I read a lot of posts and comments regarding both of these players, so I thought it would be interesting for them to answer your questions.   All questions MUST come to me via email at mschwimer@yahoo.com.  If you ask a question in the comments section I can promise you that it will not be answered by them.

It’s draft day

Draft day is one of the highlights of the year for me, and with the Phillies actually having a first round pick this year, its all the more exciting. The draft will kick off around 7PM tonight on MLB Network. I will attempt to post updates as they are available this evening leading up to the pick. After the pick is made, Ill create a separate posting to discuss the player taken. Check below for more, and all updates will come below the fold

Some new prospect videos

Colby Shreve, June 3rd

It looks like he’s a bit more over the top than he was before the surgery, but he’s much more under control here and his delivery seems less violent. Its going to take him time to rebuild his arm strength and come all the way back, but his delivery looks good.

Matt Way, June 4th

To my untrained eye, I’m not a fan of the stabbing motion he makes with his arm before he comes toward the plate.

Sebastian Valle, June 3rd/4th

He has a bunch of moving parts and a big leg kick that serves as his timing mechanism, and I have a feeling that as he learns to repeat his swing mechanics more, and is able to maintain his timing, that he’s going to hit because he has strong wrists. But when he gets out of sync, its easy to see why he might struggle.

News of the Day

The Phillies have signed OF Willy Taveras, as assigned him to Triple A Lehigh Valley, filling in the hole created by the departure of DeWayne Wise.  Taveras was most recently in the Nationals organization and hit .200 for the Nationals in 37 plate appearances this year. Taveras, still just 28, is a .274 major league hitter in over 2400 at bats.  Additionally, he has stolen over 20 bases five times at the major league level.

On the injury front, reliever Brian Rosenberg, who has struggled with injuries all year was placed back on the DL with a Right Lat Strain by Reading.   Taking Rosenberg’s spot on the Reading roster is Pitcher Ty Taubenheim.

Pitcher Nelson Figueroa, has accepted his assignment to Triple A and will be shortly reporting to Lehigh Valley.  This will leave the ‘Pigs with a roster decision to make on their pitching staff.

Jayson Stark on Jon Singleton

Jayson Stark was on 97.5 yesterday and at the end of his interview, he started to talk about Jon Singleton. And lets just say he had lots of good things to say about him. You know how Stark can get when talking about the Phillies, so maybe take it with a pinch of salt, but its pretty impressive that Singleton is already on the national radar. Check out the audio here. Hat tip to “Mark” for passing this one along.
