Open Discussion: Week of November 21st

Here’s the open discussion thread for Phillies’ talk and other topics.

The Phillies had a busy week culminating in the submission of their 40-man roster before this past Friday’s 8:00 PM deadline.  First, early in the week and to the surprise and possible annoyance of a lot of fans, Jeremy Hellickson accepted the Phillies’ qualifying offer. Then the Phillies outrighted Elvis Araujo, David Buchanan, and Jimmy Cordero. Only then did the Phillies add 11 prospects to the 40-man roster. With the completion of the Chicago Cubs’ comeback from a 3 games to one deficit in the World Series, the off season officially began at 9:00 AM Thursday morning.  The Phillies started their off season by activating Zach Eflin, Matt Harrison, Charlie Morton, and Aaron Nola from the 60-Day Disabled List.  They followed those transactions by declining their club options on Ryan Howard and Morton.  On Friday, the Phillies took the first step toward bolstering their bullpen when they completed a trade with the Houston Astros for RHP Pat Neshek.  The Phillies will relinquish a PTBNL or cash in the deal.  The Phillies then exercised Neshek’s $6.5 million club option for 2017. No new transactional housekeeping moves by the Phillies this week.  But, Emmanuel Burriss elected free agency on the 15th.

With Dalier Hinojosa and Colton Murray apparently having accepted their outright assignments, only four required roster moves remain.  After the completion of the world series and the return of Zach Eflin, Matt Harrison, Charlie Morton, and Aaron Nola to the active roster, four players will have to be moved off the 40-man to make room.   Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of October 24th

No new transactional housekeeping moves by the Phillies this week.  But they did report the earlier signings of some free agents to minor league contracts – RHP Jose Perez,  C Ronald Torrealba, and RHP Luis Pacheco.  They also announced the assignment of a player to one of the DSL teams who had been signed during the summer, RHP Derwuin Marchan.

Open Discussion: Week of October 3rd

Here’s the open discussion thread for Phillies’ talk and other topics.

The Phillies’ season is over.  They went 1-5 the last week of the season and finished with a 71-91 record.  They were swept by the Atlanta Braves who are probably no longer the worst team in the division.  Then dropped the first two games of the final series to the New York Mets at CBP.  They won the last game of the season, but the Mets had clinched a home playoff game with their win Saturday night.  After a 42-48 first half, the Phillies were 29-43 after the All Star break. The Phillies went 3-3 last week.  They won both games of a two-game series against the White Sox, beating White Sox’ ace Chris Sale in the getaway game.  They traveled to New York to play the Mets and lost 3 of 4.  Their record stands at 70-86 (28-38 since the All Star break).   Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of September 26th
