Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 4, 2018

Sunday marked the beginning of the Phillies minor league spring training camp.  Schmidt and Ashburn Fields were reserved for the major league camp, so Groups 3 and 4 hiked over to DiMaggio Field for their morning work out.  Groups 1 and 2 took up residency on Roberts and Carlton Fields,

Today is the beginning of my favorite time during spring.  Tons of activity and lots of players at the Complex.  And sparse crowds.  Especially when the Phillies are playing next door.   Continue reading Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 4, 2018

Spring Training at the Complex, Mar. 2-3, 2018

The Phillies played a home game Friday and two split squad games Saturday.  Both days, they sent players over to the Complex to work out.  Friday’s group consisted of the players who weren’t scheduled to play in the game.  They stretched, tossed and took batting practice.

As I entered the Complex on Saturday, two buses departed for Bradenton.  Soon, the players who remained in Clearwater came out on Ashburn Field to work out.  The players taking BP were those in the home line up.

Some Pre-Spring Training Videos, Feb. 26, 2018

With the Phillies playing a night game, the early reporting  minor league players got to take to the fields before noon.  There are a lot here.  New faces include Darick Hall, Quincy Nieporte, Danny Meyer, Nick Maton, Gunnar Buhner, Ben Pelletier, Yahir Gurrola, Connor Seabold, David Parkinson, Kyle Martin, and Josh Stephen among others.

Open Discussion: Week of February 25, 2018

Practice has been truncated and games are being played.  One unanswered question, Where’s Doobie?

Crowds at the Complex remained small through the end of spring training workouts.

The minor league players already in Clearwater will be joined by the rest of their team mates for their first full squad workout on Sunday, March 4th.  Their workouts until then will be dictated by the needs of major league camp.  Minor league games begin on Tuesday, March 13th.  A link to their schedule is in the Spring Training section below.

I’ll close the book on my opinion on the subject of an Arrieta signing, for now.

Let the (Spring) Games Begin, 2018

Spring training shifted from the Complex to Spectrum Field when the Phillies took on perrenial Division II powerhouse, the University of Tampa Thursday afternoon.

The Phillies used nine pitchers and added 4 minor leaguers to the roster for the game – Zach Green, Cack Coppola, Garret Cleavinger, and Tyler Viza.  Two saw action.

First Full Squad Workout, 2018

Finally, the Phillies full squad began their spring workout.  Sixty-three players took to the fields at the Carpenter Complex Monday morning in front of a sparse crowd.  In another break from recent tradition, the players broke up into groups on three fields for stretching and throwing. Open Discussion: Week of February 18, 2018

Pitchers and catchers began last week in front of a small audience at the Carpenter Complex.  Monday their first full squad practice will be held, and the Phillies’ baseball world will return to normalcy for seven months.  #Phly Phillies Phly!

Another opinion on signing Arrieta.  This time from the Shredder!

The Phillies continue to sign players to minor league contracts who might help the team if they make the major league roster.

Pitchers and Catchers, Days Two and Three, 2018

Days two and three of pitchers and catchers were the same as day one.

On day two, the only difference in the routine was that Wednesday’s non-pitching group threw from the mounds, and the pitching group went through the PFP stations.  Newly signed Drew Hutchinson, was present, in uniform, and taking part in the workout.  The groups were –  Continue reading Pitchers and Catchers, Days Two and Three, 2018

Pitchers and Catchers, First 2018 Workout

The start of 2018 Spring Training finally arrived.  Pitchers and catchers came onto the fields at the Carpenter Complex at 11:00 AM and began their spring workouts.

Under the Kapler Regime, spring training will look very different to those who became familiar with the camps held by Charlie Manual and Pete Mackinon.  The first noticeable change was the later start.  Other changes include greater use of all fields.  More involvement by coaches and staff.  Shorter, more intense sessions.  And a distinction between “throwing” pitchers and “non-throwing” pitchers.

Here’s what I saw (or didn’t see) today. Continue reading Pitchers and Catchers, First 2018 Workout
