Future Services Contract

I promised to provide an article on Future Services Contracts.  At the bottom, you will find the exact wording from “THE OFFICIAL PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL RULES BOOK”   (Copyright © 1988, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018  The Commissioner of Baseball)

Briefly, an organization may sign, after July 1st, a player who has no previous major or minor league experience to a contract for the succeeding season – a Future Services Contract, MLR 2( j).  The limiting restriction is that they can only sign 12 such players for each team with which they have a PDC (Player Development Contract) in Class A, Short-Season, and Rookie League.  (For the Phillies that would be – Clearwater, Lakewood, Williamsport, two GCL teams, and two DSL teams.) Open Discussion: Week of August 12, 2018

The Phillies went a disappointing 2-4 on their west coast trip.  But, they return home for a seven game homestand.  Although they start off with 2 games against the Red Sox, they then host the Mets for a rare 5-game series.

During the week, the Phillies bolstered their bench with the acquisition of Justin Bour.  The right-handed first baseman is having a down year, but he has impressive numbers against his East Division foes.  The cost was McKenzie Mills.  I’ve seen Mills pitch and liked what I saw.  But, if Bour can strength our bench and help us beat the Braves and Nationals a couple times, then the trade makes sense.  Even if he doesn’t make a measurable difference down the stretch, it’s good to see the front office make a well-thought out trade like this.

Clearwater Threshers Recap – 8/11/2018

Sorry for missing yesterday’s recap.  We drove up from Clearwater and opted to drive straight thru rather than stop half way.  I’m still beat, and my laptop doesn’t have the functionality that I’m used to on my desktop.  So, here’s the start of those really truncated Recaps I promised.

Old news, we traded McKenzie Mills to Miami for 1B Justin Bour.  I got this message while on the road.  Alec Bohm was activated, and made a rehab start in the GCL.  His only playing half of a game is no big deal.  The Phillies do this a lot.  J.P. Crawford was eased back into action recently playing half games his three appearances.

And last night, Wilson Ramos made his first rehab appearance with the Threshers, and played just five innings. Continue reading Clearwater Threshers Recap – 8/11/2018
