The GCL Phillies West play tomorrow.  The game starts at 11:00 AM.  Kyle Young is scheduled to throw two innings.

A lot of the Phillies development staff has arrived in Clearwater.  I imagine they will be discussing who to invite to Instructs and who should participate in the AFL.  The AFL announcements should be coming in the next week or so.  Look for guys who missed substantial innings to be selected.  Especially among the pitchers.

Clearwater’s  Aaron Fultz, will serve as a pitching coach as part of the Scottsdale Scorpions staff.  The team will include members of the Reds, Astros, Mets, Giants, and Phillies.

The Clearwater Threshers (70-56) walked off against Dunedin, 5-4 on Raul Rivas solo HR. David Parkinson labored through five innings.  He gave up one run on 5 hits and 2 walks.  He struck out two.  Jonathan Hennigan blew the save opportunity with two runs in one inning.  Trevor Bettencourt pitched two scoreless innings.  Addison Russ blew the save but got the win with Rivas’ heroics. So, I’m walking toward the backstop on Ashburn Field and I’m overtaken by Sixto Sanchez. I say, “Hi, Cito!” and he says “How’re you doing, man.” and chucks me on the shoulder. Day made.  I’m very aware of Sanchez’ presence at the Complex.  I watch when he is around to see if I can pick up on anything.  Well today, after talking with his friends among the GCL players, he disappears.  As usual.  I go about watching the game and anything that might be peripherally interesting.  I tweet out things of note.  (I’ll get to those later.)  When what do I see coming out of Spectrum Field.  Sixto Sanchez.  And it looks like he is carrying something.  A glove?  A glove!  A baseball glove! And he’s not carrying it.  He’s wearing it! On his left hand!  And what’s that in his right hand?  A ball.  A baseball!  He veers toward Schmidt Field.  I watch him like a cat.  He veers around the fence into the bullpen area between the fields.  I get ready to change positions.  He continues to the dugout and chats with somebody irrelevant.  Not me.  Not Ray Burris.  He restarts his journey and exits the dugout through the gate.   He has to pass me to get to the club house.  As he approaches, Isay”Great to see a glove and ball in your hands.”  Sixto smiles and says”Yeah, mah” as he chucks me on the shoulder with his glove.  I’m barely audible as I ask, “Wanna have a catch?”  This should have been my lead as I’m sure he didn’t hear me.  He stops to talk to his buddies again as I try to determine where he’s likely to throw.  He’s wearing athletic shoes (sneakers) so the mounds are eliminated.  I suspect that, if he does throw, it’ll be on the back of Roberts Field.  But, it starts raining and the game is halted for about 20 minutes.  Sixto peeks out of the club house once but never comes out again.  I make several sortees to the other side of the Complex building to see if there is anything to see. Nada.  Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.

I was back at the Complex after an absence of about four weeks.  It was good to see the kids play although the outcome was a disappointing loss.  It was good to speak with the players again, and some of their parents.

D.J. Stewart had been hit in the mouth with a pitched ball back on August 7th and required 40 stitches.  He returned to the starting line up today.

Kevin Gowdy has been throwing off a mound for a while now and will continue his rehab at Instructs.

Luis Garcia had two text book at bats with the bases loaded.  He passed both times.

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I attended the Phillies/Mets game on Saturday.  I don’t know where we stopped, when we got back on the road, or when we arrived home.  I expect that we will have driven about 14 hours on Sunday and that I will be arriving home in the early evening.  I’m sure that I will be in no condition to sit at a computer for a couple hours.

Hopefully, I’ll be at the Complex Monday, and Recaps will be back to normal Monday night.

I attended the Phillies/Mets on Saturday.  It was the Phantasy Camp Reunion.  After the game we began the trek back to Clearwater.  I don’t expect that I’ll be able to provide even a basic recap.  But the link is above and this should automatically post some time after midnight.

The Clearwater Threshers (67-55) lost to Bradenton, 3-2.  Alejandro Requena gave up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out seven in seven innings.  Jonathan Hennigan gave up s olo HR in one inning that proved to be the winning run.  Rehabbing Pedro Florimon went 0-4.  Kyle Martin went 1-3 with an RBI.  Mickey Moniak hit a solo HR (5).  He now has an eleven game hitting streak. The Clearwater Threshers (67-54) shutout Bradenton, 5-0, and opened a 4.5 game lead in their division’s second half race with 16 games to play.  David Parkinson picked up his second win with six, two-hit, shutout innings.  Grant Dyer and Trevor Bettencourt tip-toed around six hits over the final three innings to preserve the shutout.  Bettencourt struck out four in his two innings. 

Pedro Florimon went 3-4 with a double, triple, and RBI in a rehab start.  Mickey hit a 2-run double.  Kevin Markham had an outfield assist at second base.
