2019 Instructs, First Week’s Intrasquad Games

The guys here for Instructs are continuing to perform the drills I wrote about in an earlier report.  They ended Saturday’s work outs with bunting and fielding contests.  They played intrasquad games both days at Spectrum Field.  I love watching a game when both teams wear the exact same uniform (Not!).

There are probably more.  Those not specifically here for Instructs are working primarily indoors.

Instructs culminated with intrasquad games on Friday and Saturday.  The squads looked to maintain contiguity from one day to the next.  Manager Greg Brodzinski’s team “won” both games.  Games last as long as the teams have pitchers.  Seven innings on Friday, 6.5 innings on Saturday.  Innings were rolled if pitch count rose too high.  Pitchers threw no more than one inning.

The scoreboard tracked runs but not hits and errors.  I think there were just 4 runs total 2-1 and 1-0), and not many more hits.  Chalk these games up as wins for the 27 pitchers who saw action.  Except for Daniel Vilchez who had his inning rolled after just one pitch.  It was lined back through the box off his pitching hand.  He left under protest.

Friday’s pitchers included – Jonas De la Cruz, Christian Hernandez, Alejandro Made, Carlos Betancourt, Josh Hendrickson, DJ Jefferson, Adam Leverett, Spencer Van Scoyoc, Jaylen Smith, Nick Lackney, Engel Estevez, Carlos Francisco, Juan Gerrido, and Dylan Castenada.

Kendall Simmons went 0-1 with a BB, HBP. Bryson Stott went 0-1 with a BB.  Carlos de La Cruz went 1-1 with a run scored, RBI single, and 2 stolen bases.  Keaton Greenwalt went 1-2.  Luis Garcia went 1-2.  Rixon Wingrove went 0-1 with 2 BB. Ben Pelletier went 0-2 with a BB.  Freddy Francisco went 1-2.  Marcus Lee Sang went 1-3.  Jose Cedeno went 1-1 with a triple.

Saturday’s pitchers included Tyler Burch, Tyler Adams, Francisco Morales, Samuel Aldeghari, Chris Micheles, Andy Reyes, James McArthur, Daniel Vilchez, Fernando Lozano, Gunner Mayer, Victor Vargas, Josh Gessner, and Jeack Perkins.

The only run scored without a hit – 2 walks, a wild pitch and a ground out.  Jose Cedeno tripled again into the RF corner.  Nicolas Torres also tripled.

Morales and Micheles each struck out two batters.  I didn’t watch the radar gun since this is Instructs and guys should be working on things.  But, Sammy Aldeghari threw for the first time “under the gun”.  So, I couldn’t resist.  He throws a loud, heavy fastball.  But it only registered 90 mph the six times he threw it.  He also threw a change up at 83-84 and a curve ball in the mid 70s.

Games against other orgs start this week.

  1. Thanks as always for your hard work and thorough information. Will we be able to see/find box scores for these games starting this week?

  2. I wonder if LHP Sammy Aldeghari had interaction with Nick Fanti who was on the Italian team a couple of years ago.
MLB teams are looking at Italian pitchers it seems…..also the Tigers ….Daniele Di Monte and Cubs….Matteo Bocchi, have signed Italian pitchers to their minor league systems..
