Box Score Recap

The Clearwater Threshers (60-52) beat Tampa, 4-3.  Bailey Falter returned to the mound and pitched six, three-hit, shutout innings.  He walked none and struck out two. Bettencourt gave up 3 runs (one unearned) in 1.1 innings.  Jake Hernandez allowed 2 of 3 inherited runners to score, but held on to get his 3rd save.  He struck out 4 in 1.2 innings.  

Crawford went 0-4 with a walk and strike out.  Moniak and Cabral each had 2 hits and an RBI.  Gamboa had 3 walks and an RBI.  Markham had 2 hits.

GCP Phillies East (23-15) beat Yankees East, 10-2.  Jonas De La Cruz got the win with four innings after Mario Sanchez tossed a scoreless rehab inning.  Vilchez, Made, and Lehman combined to pitch four shutout innings.  Juan Aparicio went 2-3 with a triple and 3 RBI.  James Smith, Simmons, and Rivera had 2 hits each.

GCL Phillies West (19-19) lost to the Blue Jays, 11-5.  Jose Conopoima blew a 4-run lead. Ethan Evanko blew a save.  Tom Sutera and Alex Garcia gave up 3 and 1 runs respectively. Garcia, O’Brien, and Matos had 2 hits each.

Lehigh Valley (70-44) lost to Indianapolis, 12-5.  Cole Irvin weakened in the sixth inning where he faced 4 batters but couldn’t get an out.  Tyler Gilbert allowed all 3 inherited runners to score.  He and 2 other relievers gave up 6 additional runs.  Valentin and McBride had 2 hits each. Meneses hit a solo HR in 5 AB.

Williamsport (22-28) beat Auburn, 4-2.  Francisco Morales went four innings, 84 pitches.  He gave up an unearned run on 3 hits and 4 walks.  The back end of the bullpen preserved the win – Austin Ross struck out 5 in 1.2 innings while stranding 2 runners, and Keylan Killgore picked up his eighth save.  Eight starters had at least one hit, Marchan had two and an RBI.  Aklinski, Pelletier, and Holmes had an RBI each.

  1. What are the implications of signing an IFA to a 2019 contract. First year of control doesn’t start till 2019? Bonus counts against 2019 dollars?

    1. I posted the CBA wording for a Future Services Contract a couple weeks ago. I will look it up and devote a separate article on it in a few days. But, basically, since most of the players are 16-years old, it pushes the start time of their Rule 5 and minor league service time clocks back one year. I don’t recall if there is any mention of the bonus money.

      We have a number of players already signed to future services contracts. They are designated with a light blue background in the Organization’s Rosters sheet I attach in the Recaps, and with several designations in the Organization’s Rule 5 sheet. For instance “Sgn Nxt Yr” in the Status column, “2019” in the Effective Season Column, and “2023” in the Year of Rule 5 Eligibility column.

      I came across some interesting information and incorporated it into the Rule 5 sheet, but haven’t published the changes yet. I had to extrapolate for a few guys, and had to check the new info against the previous info I had gathered over the past few seasons. I was going to unveil it in an Open Discussion, but maybe I better address the changes in a separate article. In either case, it should be out this weekend, I hope. Early next week at the latest.

  2. Casimiro was perfect through 6. First 2 hitters BB in 7th and they score a run without a hit. Finally, after BB’ing the first batter in the 8th and then getting the 2nd hitter to pop out, he gives up a hit. They took him out immediately after that. Nice pitching Ranfi!

  3. Sometimes in the DSL guys sneak up on you. They are on the roster but not playing so you don’t pay much attention to them. Then suddenly you open up a box score (thanks Jim) and you see a guy has a 0.00 ERA and 4 for 4 in saves. The guy is Eduar Segovia, a 17 yo pitcher playing on DSL White. He’s only played in 6 games and 4 of them have come with Save Opportunities. He’s pitched 9+ innings and has 10 Ks and 7 BBs. A guy, who pops up out of nowhere, and becomes intriguing.

  4. I am worried about Crawford and who will play short stop next year. Both Crawford and Kingery are young but have not been impressive. There are SS prospects but they are at the lower level.

    2. Willie…obviously, IMO, Manny if he signs on with the Phillies.
      Franco apparently will remain in the org.

    3. Yeah I mean I know hes getting himself back into playing shape but going 0 for every night in single A isn’t a great look for Crawford

  6. Love your stuff;it’s a must read every morning, especially as i was born and bred in Reading. Alex Bohm was on the 7 day DL on 7/14. It’s been near a month. Is he returning anytime soon? Is this another Roman Quinn?? Thankx ________________________________

    1. Well, if Bohm is hurt every season between now and 2023, then he can become Roman Quinn – they are probably just being careful with him. He’s so far off from the majors I’m not worried about it. If he’s still not playing by mid-April, then I’ll worry about it, but not now.

  8. Matt Winkleman says he has Luis at 8 right now and will probably put him in the top 5 towards the end of the season.

    I think the kid might be legit. Would love to see him get a handful of games up in LKW before the season ends.

    Bohm sheesh I hope he’s ok but the Phillies have had no luck with this high picks. Like the Sixers they keep hitting road blocks. I saw where Zaire Smith went down with a foot injury will miss all of the season.

    Hasely of course has done just fine to make it to reading in his first full season of MiLB but outside of him you have to go back to Nola.

    1. I didnt think Smith was going to miss all season but knowing the Sixers, I would not be shocked.

      1. same injury as Ben – Jones fracture. I would be surprised if he plays a minute this year for Sixers.

        1. Zhaire’s injury happened nearly 2 months earlier than Ben’s. Ben was also either 1. held out once healthy near the end of the season, or 2. had a setback. depends on who you believe. either way, Zhaire will probably be ready to go about a third of the way into the season.

    3. @DMAR – i normally agree with MattWinks prospect evaluation and I do believe that Luis Garcia has a legit case to be #5. If I remember it correctly, Hinkie and I already ranked Luis Garcia at #8 and if Garcia finished the year the same, he will jump up just behind Sixto, Medina and Bohm.

  9. I’ve seen Cole Irvin only a handful of times live. I’ve seem a lot of similarities to Cliff Lee but the one thing I haven’t seen is a really good change up. Wondering if anyone has a scoutting report on that pitch as it will likely mean the difference between big league success or not.

    1. Irvin has an underutilized CU which flashed as average. Irvin utilized mostly his Cutter as the off speed pitch – which some of the reports I saw, the Cutter can be above average.

  10. I know there’s a stats guru out there – what does Moniak need to hit (and walk) to get his OBP to .300 for the year?

  11. I’ve never posted anything here before, but I read the site and all the commentaries religiously. At this point is there any reason to believe Crawford can hit at all?

    1. I just don’t see it. I hope I’m wrong. Bat seems like it’s 100 lbs in his hands. Plus, he will make some outstanding plays in the field but is prone to boot a few easy ones. Time will tell. He needs to get stronger though. Freddy and Jimmy were little guys but had some thickness about them.

    2. Hi Bill. Fangraphs has a stat called wRC+ that compares your hitting to the average hitter in your league. If you have a 100, you are equal to the average hitter in your league. Higher than 100, you are better.

      In 2017, JPC had a wRC of 114 in AAA. In 2016, he had a wRC of 128 in AA. In 2015, he had a wRC of 121 in AA. In 2014, he had a wRC of 119 in A+. This continues back to 2013 too in rookie ball. Basically, he has been an above average hitter in the minor leagues every year. I think that is solid evidence that he can hit.

      This year has been rough. He has not hit at all. Then again, he has been injured a lot. Since he is 23 (8 months younger than Kingery; only 15 months older than Haseley), I think he has more time to prove himself at the major league level.

      1. I’m still high on JPC for the reasons you cite. You don’t get through the MiLB levels the way he did without having some bat to ball skills and his eye has always been superb.

        For one reason or another he never got comfortable at the start of the season. Never seemed to have his timing. Age is on his side so I’d try to get him back to LHV as soon as possible and let him find it again.

        He’s gotta want it though.

  12. Clearwater: 25 meant left on base last night, 8 hits, night before no hits. Pitching once again strength. Any hopes of Lakewood hitters? Scheiner ?

  13. I really liked the Rule 4 Day 3 haul by Johnny A. I already talked about Logan O’Hoppe a lot, but there’s interesting arms that I’m started to get excited about – McArthur, Kinney, McKay and Keylan Killgore is the arm that I liked the most. Killgore is pitching exclusively from the pen and he’s been lights out. He can be a fast tracker and join Kyle Dohy as the emerging LHP pen arm that the Phillies desperately needs.

    1. Theres gold in dem dar hills Kuko. A deep farm is currency and currency allows you to acquire stud MLB talent when the time is right.

      1. @DMAR, agree with you. I’ve mentioned in my previous posts that prospects are not only serve as pipeline but also as a currency to acquire talent. That’s why I always advocate for high risk high reward prospects in Day 1 and 2 of the Rule 4 draft. In 2015-2017, Johnny A. tend to lean towards the safer prospects in Day 1 and 2 (except for Gowdy) and reserve most of the risky picks in Day 3.

  14. Two hit game today for Joey Meneses. Last 29 games slashing .372/.417/.638.
    Maybe a September call-up. Gabe will need to work him in if he is put on the 40.

    1. There always seems to a some minor league non-prospect who becomes the darling that needs to be called up immediately. Joey Meneses appears to be the man in 2018.

      If they call him up, where are they going to work him in? He can play 1b and he’s not going to replace Santana. If they want to call him up in September as an extra bench bat that’s great but he’s not moving anyone out of the line-up…

      1. And I should add Romus that I’m not directing this at you specifically, I’ve seen multiple posters pushing the idea that it’s a travesty that he hasn’t been called up already…

        1. it may be telling that unlike, for example, Rhys, they are not practicing him at other positions.

          1. Joey Meneses has played the bulk of his innings at first base this season, but he has also played 22 games/186 innings in RF this season.

          He has had a year like Victorino’s last year in minors. Victorino was 25. No expected much from Vic. Meneses is 26.

          1. I think Meneses could fill the Plouffe/Cozens role… which is basically pinch hitter only.

            Can Lively be promoted then put on 60day DL to get a roster spot?

            Will be interesting to see how many players pulled up on Sept 1.

          2. Victorino could play all 3 OF positions, run, and steal bases. Not a very good comparison…

            As for spelling Santana, I’d rather they use Hoskins to spell Santana and then play Quinn in the OF but I’m fine with his being called up in September as a bat off the bench.
