Phillies Announce Non-Roster Invites, 1/4/2018

After what seemed like an interminable delay, the Phillies have announced the signings of several players to minor league contracts and the extension of invitations to spring training to same.

  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies signed free agent 3B Will Middlebrooks to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies signed free agent RHP Pedro Beato to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies signed free agent C Eric Fryer to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies signed free agent C Matt McBride to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies signed free agent OF Danny Ortiz to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies signed free agent 3B Heiker Meneses to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies signed free agent RHP Steve Geltz to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies signed free agent CF Pedro Florimon to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies invited non-roster 3B Mitch Walding to spring training. (signed an MiLB FA contract back in September)
  • 1/3/2018 – Phillies invited non-roster C Logan Moore to spring training. (signed an MiLB FA contract back in November)

    1. Yes. I don’t think this is necessarily the end of free agent signings and non-roster invites. Last season the Phillies invited 62 players to camp. That’s 22 NRI. About 13 were from within the organization. Daniel Nava and Brock Stassi made the roster out of camp, I think.

      Some of these guys will stick in the minors, some will be released. Last March, LHP Sean Burnett, C Bryan Holiday, OF Chris Goghlan, and C Ryan Hennigan were released out of major league camp; Alec Asher was sold to Baltimore; and Tyler Goeddel was claimed off waivers. Not to mention the 2 minor league trades in January (Severino Gonzalez to Miami for PTBNL and Joey Curletta to Seattle for Pat Venditte) and the 21 minor league players released by opening day.
