Final Practice; June 10, 2014

A truck was backed up to the doors of the Carpenter Complex.  Bags were being loaded even as the last intrasquad was being played.  This afternoon the truck will head for the airport to begin the long trip to Williamsport.

They only played 5.5 innings today.  Six pitchers made brief appearances.  The most notable was Brody Colvin.  The former member of the “baby aces” was hit around in 1.1 innings, giving up 5 hits and 4 runs, 3 earned.  In Colvin’s first inning, Robinson Torres dropped a bunt down the third base line.  When Luis Encarnacion missed on his bare-hand attempt, Torres continued to second while Encarnacion chased down the ball.  He moved to third on a ground out and scored on Malquin Canelo’s sac fly to center.  Colvin retired the first batter in his next inning, but gave up 3 more runs on a single by Jan Hernandez, single by Herlis Rodriguez, two-run double by Torres, and a single by Jesus Posso before the inning was “rolled”.

Miscellany –

  • Cord Sandberg went 0-4.
  • Trey Williams went 0-4.
  • Robinson Torres went 2-2 wit a walk, 2 R, and 2 RBI.
  • Malquin Canelo went 2-2 with a sac fly and an RBI.
  • Luis Encarnacion went 2-3 with a strike out.
  • Jake Sweaney went 2-3 with a double and 2 R.
  • Jose Pujols went 0-2 with another walk and a strike out.

Zach Green played first again.  He struck out looking in his first at bat.  He drove in a run with a ground out in his second at bat.  He picked up another RBI with a sac fly in his third at bat.

I didn’t see Cody Asche outside today.  I saw Kelly Dugan’s rental, so I assume he was getting treatment/working out inside.  Gonzalez and Galvis arrived for treatment at the start of the game.

I can’t wait to see the Williamsport roster.  I heard that Williams and Pujols aren’t on it.  I haven’t been able to confirm that.  I thought both played well enough to be included.  If this is true, I guess they are the first 2 casualties to the college heavy draft.

  1. I think you got it right. When 28 of the first 29 guys are college guys, the Phillies can justify leaving the still very young Pujols and the relatively young Trey Williams down in GCL. Hope they both mash though. I just hope Sandberg and Jan Hernandez go to Williamsport.

    1. Haha, you think? Actually, I was parked next to him at the Complex one day. I didn’t recognize him as he put a bag in his trunk. I thought he was one of those autograph guys that are at the fields all the time. A couple I watch the workouts with did recognize him and told me of my “brush” with celebrity at the game that night.
