Some surprising news coming out of the Carpenter Complex tonight with Mike Stutes among the first group of cuts by the Phils, as he was optioned to minor league camp. Stutes, who has battled injuries over the past two seasons struggled mightily in his early Spring Training appearances, giving up 7 earned runs in 3IP. Also on the list of cuts are RP Luis Garcia, OF Kelly Dugan, OF Aaron Altherr, OF Leandro Castro and C Sebastian Valle. No major surprises except for how quickly Stutes was sent back to minor league camp.
In other news at the minor league facility today, OF Anthony Hewitt came up lame (hamstring) while running out a grounder and was in a considerable amount of pain leaving the field.
Stutes seemed to be on the lip of becoming a force in the pen with some speed on his FB and a good mostly erffective slider.Problem has been that he can’t locate his pitches well…and then has had arm problems that seems to have caused a reduced speed on his FB.
A shame; the pnly way back for him is to try to find placement for his pitches and gully-up his FB.
Wish him luck, but look elsewhere for immediate help. I DO like Rosenberg who can throw it by hitters…supplemented by a sneaky slider.

Shoulder surgeries do in pitchers. Stutes had his done a couple years ago.
Thats why Watson and Morgan could be real concerns.
I cannot think of any pitcher who ever came back from a shoulder surgery do be their ‘old self’. The greats like Halladay and Santana did not.

How could I forget!
You got me…Clemens early torn labrum and Schilling’s injury and they both came back stronger.

You know there was reason for cautious optimism for the bullpen heading into the season. Had some young, live arms to hopefully do their thing. Honestly though I think it’s going to be a complete shambles again like last year. Our guys with good stuff have no control and then there are injuries, etc. For whatever reason we can’t really catch a break in developing our young relievers

thats a defeatist position. They just need to draft higher…which they will for next few years.

But relievers aren’t drafted with primo draft picks.

Just caught that Altherr had a hairline fracture in his wrist. Anyone have any insight?

He did that in the Arizona Fall League. I would think it is healed by now. He was expected to be sent to minor league camp at this time.

He had surgery on it but is due back in late April.

From my untrained eyes:
Cozens – I now understand what they meant about big but not necessarily athletic. Looks like you can get him off-balance fairly easy.
Crawford – that is one sweet stroke.
Green – Already looking too bulky for 3B. Slow hands will be issue going forward.
Tocci – like his bat speed and stroke. Might have to move him up in my ranking as it looks like only thing that will hold him back is strength.

I dont think anyone will confuse Cozens with Billy Hamilton, but I would think you have to be at least a little athletic to play LB in the Pac 12.
