Box Score Recap – 4/25/2013

Well, I’ve been ignoring it for a while and hoping it would go away, but it hasn’t. Roman Quinn is in a funk. A real, James-Brown-counting-to-eight-but-replacing-the-last-couple-numbers-with-grunting-noises-and-maybe-a-screeching-“woo” funk. He should probably try to get up off of that thing. Perhaps dance ’til he hits better. Ok, now, if you would, please allow me to take it to the bridge. Can I take it to the bridge?

Here’s the affiliate Scoreboard from MiLB. REA and CLR off.

  1. I can’t say I’m concerned about Roman Quinn. We should all be expecting a 4-5 year process with plenty of speed bumps along the way. So long as he can stay healthy, he’ll find a major league career eventually.

This slow start only affirms that we probably won’t see a meteoric rise through the minors.

  2. At least Quinn was a stretch assignment to Lakewood and has remained above the Mendoza line. Joseph and Martin really in severe funks for Allentown. Ditto for Valle. Ditto for Gillies. Ruf showing some signs of stirring, but it will be an awful April for him. Pettibone was bad in Allentown, but good in one start in Philly. Greene left in XST and looking like he will be below Mendoza for April at Lakewood. Gueller XST. Tocci is a real stretch assignment to Lakewood, but has slipped back below Mendoza line and showing no power. For most of us, those guys are at least half of the guys in the top dozen of our prospect rankings. Not good.

At least Franco, Biddle, Morgan, Watson haven’t disappointed.

    1. I don’t think Quinn to LKW was a stretch assignment at all he compiled 306 PA’s at WPT last season. LKW is right where he should be. Having said that no concern from me.

I expect they want Tocci and Gueller getting game experience rather than XST so as soon as WPT opens up it is likely they are reassigned there and then if they do well they can be back in LKW to finish their seasons.

    2. The minor league season hasn’t been that bad. The only ‘difference maker’ prospects that are really struggling, are Roman Quinn and Ethan Martin. Larry Greene and Mitch Gueller don’t look like much so far. But that’s 4 guys. Everybody isn’t going to do well.
There are more guys doing well, than struggling. Biddle, Morgan, Franco and Watson have been very good. There has even been a couple of pleasant surprises from low level prospects: Altherr, Rosin and Perkins. Altherr looks like this years’ Asche.
Joseph and Tocci aren’t in the disappointment category, for me, because they’re way too young for the level they were promoted. There is an adjustment period that should be expected.

    3. You guys always talk about the same prospects that don’t do s%*t, but because the big boys tell you their the next stars everyone believe that crap. Remember their the idiots because they paid all that money for them. How about guys like Coady Overbeck with 5 homers already in April batting 280, the little 2nd baseman, Freddy, Mitchell who is the best all around Defensive outfielder who in last 10 games is hitting 395, how come we don’t here more about these kind of players, it blows my mind look where the Phillies are now record wise and it won’t get much better, you have guys that been there done it the FIRE is gone. It’s time for more young blood and even if they don’t win I would have more fun watching these guys than the ones who make all the money and rant producing….

      1. If you think that young blood is exciting, why don’t you watch a couple of Astros or Marlins games and get back to us.

  3. I don’t read all the comments, so not sure if anyone has noted Ceaser Hernandez’s nice start at AAA at the age of 23. The power is non-existent, though, so really limits any impact he can have in the major leagues.

  4. Asche quietly creeping up on a .300 average and .800 OPS. And it should be noted that while most everyone else (I’m not counting D Young) struggled against a big league pitcher in LHV last night, Asche went 2-4 with a double. He’ll be in Philly by September.

An incredible six of nine Lakewood batters are sporting SUB-.200 batting averages in that box score. Quinn’s .207 is the third best. Disappointing does not begin to describe this team.

    2. I think I’m perceived as anti-Asche because I’ve pushed back against the most extreme pro-Asche comments, but I really like him and am not at all surprised at the trajectory of his season. I still think his upside is limited, and Franco is the better long term prospect, but I am very much looking forward to seeing him in Philadelphia.

I don’t think it will be before September. As skeptical as I am about M. Young being able to continue at quite the same pace, the combination of (a) his expected rebound as a hitter, and (b) his below average but adequate play at third base makes it unlikely that Asche will be called up sooner. I may even end up having to admit being wrong about M. Young (though it is too soon to do so yet).

Though come to think of it, M. Young is someone who I haven’t seen on anyone’s list of possible trade candidates if the season remains dismal, but who I assume would definitely be on the block. (Not that they would get much for him, but why hold on to him if they are out of contention.) So maybe we will see Asche sooner.

      Like

      1. I think that if this season continues to go south Young would definitely a prominent trade candidate, especially if his batting numbers hold up. and if that happens, well Asche may be here in august

      2. “M. Young is someone who I haven’t seen on anyone’s list of possible trade candidates if the season remains dismal”

If the Phils fall out of contention, Young may be one of the first players to go if he continues to hit .300+. I’m sure an AL team would love to have him though we obviously wouldn’t get a big return for him regardless of how well he’s performing come July

        Like

      3. Agree that Young would be a trade candidate. But even if he sticks around I could see Young in a September platoon with Asche just to get his feet wet for next year.

      1. Lakewood has had a number of good teams in recent years. The 2010 squad was one of the best teams in the history of the SAL

      2. Won the league in 2006, 2009, 2010. The 2011 team was hurt by a 2010 draft that had some shining spots but a lot of raw players (went 68-69). The 2012 Blueclaws team was weak because the College guys were jumped past it and the highschool guys only made it to Williamsport (losing Wright, Morgan, and Asche was bad for them and good for the org).

    1. Keep major league talk out of the box scores, please.

As for “the whole organization stinks” you conveniently excluded Biddle, Franco, Asche, Altherr, Hernandez, Morgan, etc. Most prospects are going to fail. That is a fact. Even the prospects who eventually make it to the majors are likely going to experience some trouble and setbacks along the way. I’d say the fact that we have 4 prospects (Biddle, Asche, Hernandez, and Morgan) that are relatively close to the majors either meeting or exceeding expectations is a pretty good thing.

  6. I agree how bad the organization is. So since the parent club is not going to make the playoffs this year it is time to clean house at the trading deadline. Between Ruiz, Utley, M Young, Rollins, Lee, Papelbon, they should be able to get a decent prospect or two. Look what we got for Jim Thome. When teams are in dire need at playoff time they will talk turkey. Besides these players are no longer any use to the Phillies after this season.

    1. Highly doubt anyone would want Rollins. Paplebon would be attractive if not for the fact that he’s making $12 million. Detroit might like him.

      1. Rollins to the A’s and hometown…not sure Lowrie is their answer for this year and next.
Howard to Rangers…not sure Rangers are sold on Berkmann and Moreland, and Ryan wants to win now. They also have the money to pay the contract, after all its Texas!

  7. Sell the whole team. Utley too. Let him come back as a free agent, I don’t care. Pay someone 60 million to take Howard. Fire RAJ and Charlie. Start fresh next season and the fans will come out.

    1. That has historically not been accurate. Casual fans fill the stadium. Casual fans don’t like watching losing teams. It’s why they’re not selling out any more.

      Like

      1. I think the casual fans are tired of seeing over the hill guys looking like shadows of their former selves. They can easily do a Red Sox one-year rebuild by getting a bunch of pieces in free agency and mixing them up with the younger guys on the roster and high minors.

        Like

        1. This is wrong on so many levels that I could write a short novel in response. Being short of time I’ll simply respond to the “Red Sox one year rebuild” absurdity: given the state of the system and the very poor coming free agent market, following that strategy would, far from a Red Sox style one year rebuild, result in a team much worse than this year’s Marlins. If everything broke right, the team might “only” lose 105 games. It could be much worse.

I don’t think the fans would be happy with that.

  8. Quinn is on the young side for Lakewood, but I’m still a little concerned. It’s one thing to be hitting poorly and another to be overmatched. He’s making Angelo Mora look pretty good right now with his 15Ks and 10 BBs, even though the other numbers aren’t good.

    1. Jesse Biddle, lhp, Phillies

    Team: Double-A Reading (Eastern)

    Age: 21.

    Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00. 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 16 SO; also 2-for-3 with 2 2B, 1 R

The Scoop: It’s not often that a pitcher has feel and command for all of his pitches, but when it happens, it can be a very special day.

Reds lefthander Tony Cingrani had one of those moments on Opening Day, which earned him the top spot of the season’s first Hot Sheet. Biddle was even better on Monday night. He struck out 16 batters in seven scoreless innings, carrying a perfect game into the seventh before losing it on a walk and single.

The performance was easily the best game of Biddle’s career, topping a pair of 12-strikeout games he had at high Class A Clearwater last year. Biddle’s game is also one of the best strikeout performances we’ve seen in the minors in the last seven years. His 16 strikeouts equals the highest total in a minor league game since Ian Snell’s 17 strikeouts in 2009.

15 OR MORE STRIKEOUTS IN A MINOR LEAGUE GAME SINCE 2007

    Dan Straily Midland TL 5/18/12 23 7.0 3 1 1 1 15

Everything was working for Biddle on Monday, but it was his curveball that was especially nasty. He used to struggle to throw it for strikes, but it’s now turned into a true weapon for the lefty.

But if we needed any further sign that Biddle was in the zone on Monday, just look at what he did at the plate—2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. On Monday, Harrisburg didn’t have a chance.

    13. Aaron Altherr, cf, Phillies

Team: high Class A Clearwater (Florida State)

    Age: 22

    Why He’s Here: .522/.593/.739 (12-for-23), 6 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 5 RBIs, 4 BB, 4 SO, 2-for-2 SB

The Scoop: Altherr has been one of many physical, toolsy prospects the Phillies have collected in the draft in recent years, but since signing as a ninth-round pick in 2009 he’s never been able to fully translate those tools into skills. That may be changing. Altherr is hitting .372/.437/.551 in 20 games to rank third in the Florida State League in hitting, while tying teammate Maikel Franco for the league lead with nine doubles.

    2. Not to be Debbie Downer, but technically, there are three included on the sheet:

      Not Hot
Ethan Martin, rhp, Phillies: Last year, Martin seemed to take a step toward conquering the control problems that have held him back since the Dodgers made him a first-round pick 2008, but the early returns this year haven’t been good. Martin, 23, has walked 16 in 17 1/3 innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, including 10 in eight innings this week, during which he also allowed 11 earned runs on 11 hits.

      1. To be honest, I’m lost as to why peeps have renewed confidence in his control. In 2012, his BB/9 with Chatanooga in 120 IPs was 4.7; In less than 40 IPs with LV (2012) it was 4.1. Certainly too small of a sample at LV to draw conclusions let alone enough of a sample to believe this could be anything more than random variation. Perhaps publications are referring to prior seasons when his BB rate regularly exceeded 6.

He’s still young, won’t turn 24 til June. But as of today I find it difficult to be bullish on Martin as a MLB starter.

    1. roccom…..’The Phillies drew 513,147 fans for their first 14 home games in 2013. That is 117,031 fewer fans than in the first 14 games of 2012. Their average decrease of 8,359 fans per game is second-most in baseball; only the gutted Marlins are worse. If the trend continues, it could have a serious effect on the team’s finances. An average decrease of 8,359 fans projected to 81 home dates is a total loss of 677,079. The team’s average ticket price is $37, according to Team Marketing Report and Forbes. That could represent, on average, a $25 million loss in revenue. And that’s just in ticket revenue alone. When fewer people are in the ballpark, less money is spent on concessions and merchandise’.
