A strong start from Hoby Milner – 1R on 3H, 0BB and 7K in 7 IP. After a slow start to 2013, he’s had a really good May. His overall season numbers show K/9 of just over 9, and BB/9 at 2.3. That’s good stuff. Too many HR allowed, and his GO/AO is pretty low – flyball tendencies so far this year, not unlike 2012.
Kelly Dugan went deep for the second straight game, his fifth of the year, Roman Quinn went 2-3 with a walk and his fifth, and Leandro Castro was 2-5, including hit his fifth bomb.
A second look at the middle infield around the system. It is frankly a bit frightening with Cesar Hernandez not included as he is in Philadelphia. The real bright spot is Carlos Alonso who is a 25 year old, 32nd round draft pick, playing High A. Roman Quinn continues to gives inconsistent rays of hope with the bat, but is currently on a pace for 60 errors this year.
Troy Hanzawa, 27, Phils 16th round pick in 2008; .357/.379/.464 in 84 AB’s between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 1HR 9RBI; 1/2SB; 3%bb/13%k rates; Hitting .435 in 23 AB’s since getting called up to Lehigh Valley. 15 games at SS with 2 errors (.964); 3.53 R/F. 9 games at 2B with 2 errors (.957); Hanzawa was called up to compensate for the loss of Martinez and Hernandez and has done a good job. He is a slap hitter, weighing 150 at best, but has done that well and played a solid SS. Continue reading Around the System–Middle Infield→
A mild improvement from last time for Austin Wright – he did give up 4 walks and 5 hits, but he got through 5.1 IP. He threw 73 pitches, 41 for strikes, which needs to get better. To me, he’s a candidate to go to the AFL as a starter – if he’s completely healthy, of course. He missed some time, and so would likely have some innings left under his season limit, and seeing him against some better competition probably couldn’t hurt in evaluating his ceiling as a starter.
Cameron Rupp with another homer – he’s up to 8 on the year and his OPS for May sits just over 1.000. A bit of a clunker from Perci Garner – couldn’t get out of the fifth inning while allowing 4R, 6H, 4BB and striking out just 2. Kelly Dugan with his 4th HR – his OPS sits 20 points higher than where he finished 2012 as he gets to a pretty significant sample of around 125 PAs. The guy can rake a little bit – no doubt about it. A look at the time period of May 23-29. Some random thoughts…It is time to start paying some significant attention to Seth Rosin…17 year old Carlos Tocci has begun really holding his own in Lakewood….Can Josh Fields help the Phils?….Larry Greene continues to be unproductive at best…David Buchanan with two encouraging starts after struggling battling back from injury….Yoel Mecias is a name worth watching in Lakewood (just 19 and has a very live arm)…Severino Gonzalez(20 years old) has not allowed an earned run in his first 12.2IP for Clearwater, spanning 5 outings.
Hot Hitters:Jon Roof (.462, 4R 3RBI), Cameron Rupp (.417); Justin Dallas (.417); Josh Fields (.379, 7R, HR 3RBI, 2SB); Carlos Tocci (.381);Leandro Castro (.357, 5R HR 7RBI, 3SB); Tommy Medonca (.333); Chris Serritella (.316) Honorable Mention:Perkins, Hanzawa, Susdorf, Hewitt Continue reading Hot or Not→
Very solid night from Yoel Mecias – 4H, 1BB, 8K in 6 scoreless innings. In the same game, Larry Greene somehow stole two bases. Wacky. (note – I couldn’t find the second one in the recap, then I realized he just stole one – it was his second of the year – I will leave my mistake here for all of you to shame me if you like).
Elsewhere, Carlos Zambrano was upstaged by Severino Gonzalez, though I bet Big Z rises through the system faster. Also, David Buchanan on the unlucky side of a pitcher’s duel in Bowie, with each team managing just 4 hits, while Leandro Castro homered and Ethan Martin was pulled after 50 lackluster pitches in a game that was suspended in Rochester. A good week for Lehigh Valley who went 4-1,after their game against Rochester was suspended with Lehigh Valley ahead 6-5 in the fifth inning last night. The ‘Pigs now stand at 24-26 and in 3rd place of the Northern Division of the International League, 6.5 games behind division leading Pawtucket. The ‘Pigs short road trip continues with two more in Rochester on Wednesday and Thursday before returning home over the weekend for four games against Gwinnett.
‘Pigs Leaders:(Hitting):Cesar Hernandez is 9th in AB’s (185), 6th in hits (57); 6th in stolen bases (15) and 1st in triples (6);Jermaine Mitchell is 2nd in triples (4); Cody Asche is tied for third in triples (3) and is 10th in RBI’s (31).
There is no good way to do a Mock Draft for the baseball draft because teams don’t draft for need and one pick can destroy an entire mock. The purpose of this activity is step through as many picks as we can before the draft on June 6. I will update the poll for the next team every so often, when I have time for the next pick in the draft. The goal is to put yourself in the mindset of the team making the pick and choose the player you would take in their place. Lets see who could be available at #16.
I kept looking around the boxes for good stuff to talk about, and kept landing on Vance Worley. So I left that line in for us to check out. Aside from that, Lakewood pitchers shut down the Delmarva Shorebirds – Miguel Nunez allowed 1 R on 1H and 2BB in 6 IP and Jordan Guth got the three inning save. Also in that game, Roman Quinn had a triple and 3Ks. Fun.
