Jim, a relocated Philadelphian to the CLearwater area was kind enough to provide some insight as to what is happening at the complex:
“I watched the XST game against the Yankees today (April 15th). Giles entered the game in the top of the fourth. He promptly walked the first two batters on 9 pitches. He seemed to have good velocity, but was delivering high to the hitters. After the first two hitters, he settled in and retired the next two batters on 6 pitches, both took called third strikes. He reached a 1-2 count on the fifth hitter, and after a foul ball, surrendered a line drive over the first baseman (Austin Gallagher) down the RF line for a triple and two runs scored. The inning was called after that pitch as Giles had reached 20 pitches. Giles took the mound again for the fifth inning and retired the first batter on three pitches and a called third strike. The next batter struck out swinging on a full count. The the final batter grounded out second to first on a 2-1 pitch. He faced 8 batters in 1.2 innings – 33 pitches/18 strikes, but a very good 24/17 after the first two walks. He looked good once he got the ball down in the zone.
Dugan was walking around in the fenced area, wearing the workout “uniform” of the players who are injured or pitchers not scheduled to pitch – blue gym shorts, gray T-shirt. He looks fine, but isn’t doing any baseball drills where we can see him.
BTW, D. Young was the RF today, again. He made 3 running catches, one was a long run to catch a ball down the RF line about 15 yards behind first base, the kind of ball Utley usually gets to but not Howard.”
We had heard Dugan was to be activated this week. I guess not. Thanks for the update!

Larry plays with group 5, the group that would probably play in the Gulf Coast League. He’s still thick around the middle. I’ve watched him bat 4 times, he struck out each time. In those at bats, he seems slow through the zone. Group 4, the probable Williamsport group, includes outfielders Hiciano, G. Martinez, and Cozens (when D. Young isn’t playing). The other OF are Tromp and Golden in group 4.

That is the 1st time i’ve seen Golden’s name mentioned. It’s somewhat surprising he is in the Williamsport grouping. He is only 18, and they didn’t give him many AB’s in The GCL last year.

I see Kyrell Hudson was sent from Clearwater to Extended Spring Training. This leaves an open roster spot, possibly for Dugan………
