  2. Ethan Stewart! He’s 20 in the GCL, so a tad on the old side for a legit prospect, but I bet he has not had that much experience, being from Canada. I bet some high schoolers from CA have played more innings than he has. One can always dream…

    2. He was one of those 40 something draft choices last year and didn’t see too much work. It is just this year he has had regular work and he is responding well. I don’t regard him as a prospect, but give it a year or two.

  3. Nice start by Buchanan, I am most impressed by the lack of walks. Is his stuff good enough to make a decent prospect going forward or is he destined for the pen?

    Galvis and Valle with good nights as well.

    1. Don’t know what happened to “Bucky” after his hot start in this season…but it seems he has recovered some of his game now. However, he is a college draftee and should be doing well at this level. For me, he would become more of a prospect if he could raise his strikeouts. He reminds me of our draftee Carpenter whose hold on a MLB job is tenuous.

      Hope Bucky gets it together to become a viable prospect; just not yet, for me.

  4. Some things I’m very pleased to see:
    AA Reading. Freddy Galvis hitting .350 in his last 10games,
    A+ Clearwater. Sebastian Valle with another great game at the plate; 3for4, hr, 2r, rbi
    A Lakewood. Zach Collier continues to prove his bounce-back season coming off an injury
    Domingo Santana keeps the hot bat going…. Hewitt steals another bag.
    David Buchanan had a fantastic performance.
    A- Williamsport. Kelly Dugan in RF tonight, hit a HR. Kyrell Hudson legged a triple. Lino Martinez with another solid outing
    GCL Phils. Brian Pointer ups his avg. going 2for4 & stole 2 bags. 2010 47th round pick Ethan Stewart pitched a great game. Pine Hill NJ’s own James Birmingham notched his 8th save & dropped his era to 0.54 on the season.
    VSL Phils. H-ROD! Herlis Rodriguez went 2for2, h, 2b, r, rbi, bb. he may be one of my favorite prospects.
    DSL Phil. Shortstop Jairo Cardozo went 0for1, but worked 2 walkes. also had 3 errors in the field, yikes.

    I think Collier & Galvis have now jumped back into the system’s top 30. probably both in the 14-18 area. I’d like to see Kyrell Hudson get on that list.

    1. I think Galvis was ranked by readers in the low 20s this year, and some ranked him higher on their own lists (remember the long drawn out arguments on him for like five or six rounds).

      1. I had him higher…but then I’ve always been a Galvis booster. I have a soft spot for no hit, big time glove middle infielders. Now that he’s hitting, I’m genuinely hopeful he can be the next Adam Everett (probably his upside at this point).

      2. I don’t think he made the reader’s list at all, but I had him on my personal list. I think people were too hard on him because it seems like he’s been around forever and didn’t give him as big a break as they should have when it came to his age related to level.

  5. Great pitching up and down the system today. Buchanan is one of those Cisco-, Cloyd-type guys who needs good command to be effective. He was hit hard until his last two starts. He is back again.
    Speaking of Cloyd he had a one-hitter going into the seventh; then three straight hits and he was out of the game. A mistake by Galvis on a fielder’s choice and an under par outing by Zeid allowed three more runs (two inherited runners and a home run) to score, but they pulled it out.
    How about Cesar Hernandez with a walk-off single to pull one out for Clearwater!
    Very impressive.

  6. I’ve heard Buchanan compared to Kyle Kendrick. Now, if you think about it, this is a pretty flattering comparison. Kendrick is making some money and has had some success at the major league level.
    DeFratus is putting together some successful outings.

    1. I remember that article – I think it was in the Inquirer. Basically saying that he isn’t a strikeout pitcher, but has an effective sinker.

      If he could turn into a fifth starter/long man for a few years, that would have to be considered a success.

  7. Good game for the Cutters today in a 12:05pm matchup in which they swept Connecticut.

    Lino Martinez was really solid after giving up a run in each of the first two innings (first one wasn’t his fault as Luis Amaro’s error contributed to a run). Lino wasn’t lighting up the radar gun by any means, but was mixing his pitches effectively enough to keep the Tigers off-balance. The lefty’s fastball was most commonly coming in at 85, although that gun could be slow because I’ve seen him hit 90 at other parks this year.

    The offense was still asleep until the eighth inning, when they banged out five hits to take a 4-2 lead. Dugan’s home run was cranked over the wall in right…Franco missed his 2nd homer of the year by about a foot or two and settled for a double off the wall. Brock Stassi with a relatively surprsing 3 for 4 including a perfect bunt single down the line in that inning. Asche with a couple of hard-hit baseballs.

    Neris was really solid in his inning. He’s got great strikeout stuff – radar had him at 92, and if it’s a slow gun, then Hector was throwing even harder. Arias has scuffled a little bit lately – he nearly coughed up the lead but was able to strike out a pinch-hitter looking to end the game and strand a couple runners.

      1. Nope, he’s purely a left-handed hitter now. He’s made solid contact all year, the power is eventually going to come, especially with the small swing adjustment he’s made. I still think he needs to get a little bigger, maybe get on Galvis’ weight-lifting program in Florida over the winter. Defintiely like what I’ve seen out of him the past couple weeks.

        1. I think we can attribute a lot of Galvis’ improvement to his off-season training. I saw him in each of the two previous years and when he hit the ball, it didn’t seem to go anywhere. I saw him get two seeing-eye basehits that really never left the infield. It didn’t look like he could hit it out of the infield. He seems to have a lot more pop and he is fast enough to leg a single out once in a while. I don’t even need to mention the glove. I’d like to see him continue his training regiment this off-season. And I don’t mind if a few other guys do the same.

  8. A few thoughts from looking at the box scores:

    1) Josh Zeid has been great since moving to the pen. Even after he was double jumped, he is still somewhat old for Reading at 24. I would like to see him moved up if he has a few more good games out of the bullpen.

    2) He’s not really a prospect but it seems like Fidel Hernandez has been doing pretty good the past few days. He was doing good in Reading but then hit .160 after getting sent down to Clearwater. Now he is doing better than he was in Reading before he got sent down which doesn’t really make any sense. Maybe he was just really upset when he got sent down and it was just really bad for his confidence.

    3) Susdorf continues to hit, Cloyd continues to not walk anyone, and Cisco continues to be lights out.

    4) Overbeck and De Fratus are also doing much better than they were before in Lehigh.

    1. Indeed, I’ve observed Overbeck taking a much better, more patient approach at the plate of late. I’ve been happy with his play at first. I’m not sure this portends anything long-term, just my personal observation.

      DeFratus has been doing better of late, as well; however, I’ve been absent from the stadium the last couple times he pitched. Reports are favorable. Closed two nights in a row, too, so that’s interesting.

  9. I still can’t believe the improvement Galvis has made since last year. 21 doubles on the year is more than anyone has on the big league squad. Last season his OPS didn’t even crack .600.

    2. Weight lifting program in Clearwater over the winter with a trainer. Added muscle–says he feels lots stronger.

      1. Yup…he reportedly put on 15 lbs over the winter. He’s built more like Rollins now as a result. Before that, he was a weak slap hitter. He’s finally able to turn on pitches and drive them. He’s naturally filling out as he gets older and more mature physically.

        1. He’s still young for his level, right? I imagine they’ll move him up next year, but if he were to repeat, he’d only then be at typical age. I’m trying not to get too excited, as I don’t think he’ll ever be more than an average offensive player, but then again, who knows?

  10. Good night for the system – pitching rules as they got shut out pitching from Bump at Lehigh, Buchanan at Lakewood and Stewart at GCL. Plus Cloyd pitched well at Reading 3hits (3 runs) in 6 innings, Pettibone 2 runs in 6 innings for Clearwater, and Martinez pitched well at Williamsport. Galvis with 2 hits and Susdorf 3 hits for Reading in a walk off win. Valle with 3 hits and a HR and Ruf with a HR. Santana had 2 hits and a rbi for Lakewood.

  11. Interesting game for Herlis Rodriguez.
    Great to see Pointer get on base twice and steal second both times. Dominant line from Stewart- not only 9 Ks but also 9 groundouts/ no flyouts. And only four baserunners.
    Home run Dugan is nice. He needs more extra base hits.
    Good game for Santana, and great line from Buchanan. Love seeing good Ks and no walks.
    Home run Valle is good, as are multihit games from Mattair and Hernandez.
    Go Galvis! Double single walk steal is always welcome. And Cloyd pitched decently.
    Nice inning DeFratus.

    1. He’s so young, especially for a catcher, there doesn’t seem to be much reason to push him to AA this year.

    2. I see zero issue with a level a year approach for Valle. Catchers take longer to develop as they need to learn defense and how to call a game too. Keeping with the Baby Aces works fine IMHO.

  14. We are beginning to establish great depth in the system. All the sudden, guys that were being close to written off; Mattair, Collier, Hudson, etc. are showing some good signs. It is exciting to see prosperity within the system.

    1. I would say Collier & Hudson were close to being written off. Hudson jumped from GCL 2009 to Williamsport in 2010. He had to adjust to the league. Now with a full season at Williamsport in the books, he’s improved greatly(his K:BB in 2009 was 9to1, this year its 3.5to1). Collier was just injured last season, many people forget that he’s still only 20yrs old.

  15. Made it to the Reading game. Late night after the almost 2 hour rain delay. Cloyd looked outstanding. He retired 17 guys after just one hit and even got a hit for himself. Susdorf went 3 for 4 but was taken out after he got hurt, not sure what happened. Hope he’s back asap since he’s hitting .339 now. Nice walk off ending to the game. Article in today’s paper:

    1. It may be a blessing in disguise that Susdorf got hurt. They then had to put Mitchell in the game and his mere presence in the field, as well as getting thrown out at the plate in the 8th, inspired the team to came back and win. (This is sarcasm folks)

      1. If you were at the game you forgot Mitchell stoled 2nd and on the bad throw got to 3rd one out and the ball was hit to shallow R-F the coach sent him and it was a perfect throw. So why are you throwing in the sarcasm stuff, keep it to your self if you can’t stay positive.

  16. I’d like to see Cesar Hernandez moved to the two-hole in the CLW lineup. I’m not trying to push him or anything like that. I’d like to see what damage could be done with James, Hernandez, Singleton, Ruf, Valle and then whoever you want to round out the lineup. James and Hernandez can put a lot of pressure on pitchers if they’re on base. Cesar also handles the bat pretty well so hit and run or run and hit would open up some holes that can create big innings. Singleton, Ruf and Valle would have a lot of ducks on the pond.

    1. Until he learns to consistently take a walk he ranks behind Singleton and in the middle of the pitchers for me. But I think that is not a negative to Valle so much as an indication at how good the rest of the system is at that level.

        1. Depends on who graduates to the majors, but I don’t view him as a top 50 but I don’t think he is that far off (safely within the Top 100)

        2. Don’t know enough about other system’s players, but probably not. He has, all considered, actually taken a small step backwards in terms of his hitting this season. OTOH, simply standing still at a higher level (especially given the pitching friendly nature of the league) is progress of a sort, and his defense has reportedly improved. The fact that the “experts” mid season top 50 lists still don’t include him also means something to me.

          Top 100 though, most likely.

            1. Yes. His K% is also up a tad, albeit not significantly. Against that, ALL we have is an increase in BA driven entirely by an absurd .402 BABIP. Now, I’m perfectly willing to believe that part of that is sustainable (in terms of higher LD%), but most of it is not. Valle, who isn’t fast, probably has an upside of a .330 BABIP in the majors; assuming his other metrics stay the same, that would translate into a .261 BA. Well, that was before yesterday; now closer to .270.

              Now, it’s true that context (league effects) enters into the equation. That’s why I say “small” step backwards.

              He’s still a fine prospect – certainly his defensive improvement outweighs his slight hitting regression.
