A look at the current starting rotation at each level in the organization. Clearwater, as expected, standing out.
Lehigh Valley
Vance Worley, 23, 5 starts, 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA; 25.2IP 26H 7BB 26K, 1.28 WHIP, 5 HR allowed, .260 opp. avg., 0.96 GO/AO; .143 with RISP; .257 vs. LH, .262 vs. RH. Clearly the Phils #6 starter, he has pitched well in Lehigh Valley excluding his last outing.
Nate Bump, 34, 8 starts, 2-3 with a 5.44 ERA; 43IP 60H 11BB 23K; 1.65 WHIP; 1.51 GO/AO; .335 opp. avg., .397 vs. LH, .292 vs. RH, .352 with RISP. It simply hasn’t been pretty for Bump this year, with slight improvement over his last two starts. He is getting hit hard and often.
Eddie Bonine, 29, 9 games, 8 starts, 3-3 with a 4.46 ERA; 38.1IP 46H 8BB 35K, 1.33 GO/AO, .297 opp. avg., 1.41 WHIP, .262 vs. LH, .319 vs. RH, .342 with RISP. It was announced that Bonine was going to the bullpen but he may have gotten a reprieve with the likely callup of Vance Worley. Until his most recent couple of starts, he had been throwing well.
Brian Gordon, 32, 7 games, 4 starts, 1-0 with an 0.36 ERA; 24.2IP 14H 5BB 16K, 0.81 GO/AO; .165 opp. avg., 0.77 WHIP; .122 vs. LH, .205 vs. RH, .077 with RISP. Gordon was supposed to get just a “spot start” but has been so effective in the Lehigh Valley rotation that he has been impossible to remove. Just four starts in, lets see how long it can last for the former outfielder.
Brian Bass, 29, 8 starts, 2-2 with a 5.57 ERA; 42IP 49H 19BB 27K; 7 HR allowed, 3.04 GO/AO; .295 opp. avg., .296 vs. LH, .295 vs. RH, .267 with RISP, 1.61 WHIP. A horrible first month of the season, followed by a couple of good starts have given reason for hope for Bass. Has given up a ton of homers, and has had control issues.
Ryan Feireabend, 25, 7 starts, 2-2 with a 5.73 ERA; 33IP 36H 13BB 23K, 8 hr allowed, 1.48 WHIP; 1.11 GO/AO; .281 opp. avg., .172 vs. LH, .313 vs. RH, .400 with RISP. Feireabend has been fairly effective in his last three starts after some fairly lousy outings in his first four. A young lefty, he probably has a bit more room for error than others in the Lehigh Valley rotation.
Reading
JC Ramirez, 22, 7 starts, 5-2 with a 2.93 ERA; 40IP 31H 11BB 13K, 3 HR allowed, 1.05 WHIP, 0.82 GO/AO; .212 opp. avg., .246 vs. LH, .182 vs. RH, .212 with RISP. The numbers look real good, but the low K rate is a concern.
Austin Hyatt, 24, 8 starts, 5-2 with a 4.19 ERA; 43IP 40H 15BB 42K, 1.27 WHIP; .247 opp. avg., 0.91 GO/AO; 4 HR allowed, .238 with RISP; .161 vs. LH, .292 vs. RH. Hyatt had a rough outing his last time out but has generally continued to look good. Certainly less dominating then at High A, but some hope nonetheless.
Josh Zeid, 24, 7 starts, 1-3 with a 6.28 ERA; 28.2IP 31H 13BB 22K, 2HR allowed, 0.76 GO/AO, .287 with RISP, .381 vs. LH, .227 with RH, .303 with RISP. Zeid came into the season with a good deal of promise and he has had his struggles, being partly hampered by a back issue.
Ryan Edell, 28, 8 starts, 3-1 with a 4.18 ERA; 47.1IP 56H 7BB 30K; 1.14 GO/AO; 6 HR allowed; .295 opp. avg., 1.33 WHIP; .275 vs. RH, .300 vs. LH, .366 with RISP. Edell has been serviceable, but not much more. He is giving up alot of homers and gets pounded with RISP but hasn’t gone less than five innings in any start, unlike others on the Reading staff.
BJ Rosenberg, 25, 12 games, 1 start, 0-0 with a 1.90 ERA; 23.2 IP 23H 5BB 29K ; 1.18 WHIP; 1.47 GO/AO; .264 opp., .233 vs. LH, .281 vs. RH; .250 with RISP. Rosenberg made his first start in minor league baseball and looked good giving up just a run in four innings, while on a 65 pitch count. He has replaced Chris Kissock in the Reading rotation. Once considered a legitimate bullpen prospect, Rosenberg may have improved his secondary pitches enough to be considered for the Reading rotation in a more permanent position.
Clearwater
Jarred Cosart, 20, 9 starts, 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA; 54IP 42H 19ER 19BB 38K. Cosart didn’t throw more than six innings in his first 7 starts, but has thrown 7 and 8 innings in his last two, and has recently looked exactly as expected. Now, simply praying the arm holds up.
Jon Pettibone, 20, 8 starts, 3-3 with a 2.03 ERA; 48.2IP 42H10BB 34K, 1.12 GO/AO; .231 opp. avg., 1.06 WHIP, .230 vs. RH, .232 vs. LH, .217 with RISP. Has been consistently excellent.
Trevor May, 21, 8 starts, 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA; 44IP 34H 21BB 54K, 2 HR allowed, 1.25 WHIP; .215 opp. avg., 0.85 GO/AO; .260 vs. LH, .176 vs. RH; .286 with RISP. May is dominant when he has his control, which currently is a little more than half the time. Needs to continue to hone his consistency with his command.
Brody Colvin, 20, 3 games, 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA in just over 10 innings. Colvin has been slowed this year by a back injury, for which he was supposed to just miss a start or two, and ended up being close to a month on the DL.
Julio Rodriguez, 20, 8 starts, 5-2 with a 2.44 ERA; 44.1IP 31H 17BB 39K; 0.61 GO/AO; 1.08 WHIP; .200 opp. avg., .205 vs. LH, .197 vs. RH, .208 with RISP. Very constient for JROD.
Lakewood
David Buchanan, 22, 8 starts, 5-2 with a 2.29 ERA; 51IP 42H 14BB 29K, 1 HR allowed, 1.09 WHIP; .232 opp. avg., 0.96 GO/AO; .257 with RISP; .243 vs LH, .224 vs. RH. Buchanan has been excellent with his latest start being the blip of the radar screen.
Jesse Biddle, 19, 8 starts, 2-5 with a 4.70 ERA; 38.1IP 37H 22BB 38K; 1.53 WHIP; 0.66 GO/AO; .253 opp. avg., .194 vs. LH, .270 vs. RH, .275 with RISP; 1 homer allowed. Biddle has generally struggled until his most recent outing, in which he threw six shutout innings. Most significant has been control issues.
Garrett Claypool, 22, 10 games, 6 starts, 1-2 with a 2.48 ERA; 40IP 30H 11BB 48K; 0.46 GO/AO; 1.02 WHIP; .205 opp. avg, .217 vs LH, .195 vs. RH, .111 with RISP. Claypool has looked very good as both a long reliever and more recently, as a starter, solidifying his spot in the Lakewood rotation.
Mario Hollands, 22, 8 starts, 2-3 with a 4.43 ERA; 42.2 IP 53H 13BB 37K, 4HR allowed, 1.13 GO/AO; .308 opp. avg., 1.55 WHIP, .281 vs. LH, .322 vs. RH, .278 with RISP. Started strong but has come back to Earth and then some recently, and the 10th round pick in 2010 has been getting hit around pretty good recently.
Ervis Manzanillo, 20, 8 starts, 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA; 39H 30H 21BB 36K, 1 HR allowed, 0.77 GO/AO, .214 opp. avg., .212 vs. RH, .216 vs. LH, .211 vs. RISP, 1.30 WHIP. ALthough an ERA higher than what you would hope for, his peripherals look pretty good.
You forgot to put Josh Zeid’s ERA

While on vacation, I decided to see Clearwater play in Bradenton last Monday. Pettibone throws hard, but doesn’t mix his pitches that well. By the second time through the lineup, he lost a bit off of his fastball and was getting hit a bit. Singleton is smaller than i expected and seems to be more of a line drive hitter. Leandro Castro has good tools, especially speed-wise, but can’t read pitches all that well and looked fooled and off-balance on breaking pitches. The rest of the players were nondescript. That Utley kid might be player, though.
Just my observations; I don’t pretend to be a scout.

Utley’s an org guy at best…dude’s in his 30s playing A ball. Kinda sad really when these career minor leaguers hang around like that.

Sad thing is that he’s taking up the spot a legitimate prospect could be using to develop.

A gap in pitching development with the Lakewood rotation averaging almost a year older than the Clearwater rotation.

Manzanillo’s peripherals marred by about 5 BB/9 IP. Better control and the ERA likely comes down a lot.

never understood why you always have negative things to say about Cosart….
There has not been one thing mention about his arm this year. All pitchers have some sort of injury from time to throughout the year but you seem to make that an emphasis with Cosart.
It is your site and guess you have your favorites. This is just my opinion as well.

forgot to mention the reason for some shorter outing is that all of the starters are on pitch counts…

Observing he has a history of arm problems is a fact. Hoping he can maintain performance seems like a positive.
Btw… Players with injury histories tend to get injured more often. So it is a legit concern. The Phillies have been careful with him, even shut him down at the end of last year. They sent him to specialist, which said his arm is okay…
Let’s hope it stays that way.

history? no issues in high school and one issue last year. He could have come back but organization decided not too…

Cosart had to be shut down the previous year at the end of short season as well due to a groin.
BTW, when he injured his elbow last year he was sent to Dr. James Andrews for diagnosis. I think a lot was made a the time because the doctor performs a lot of surgeries on high profile athletes. People were worried…
Anyways, here’s hoping Cosart stays healthy and progresses.

Biggest surprise is Rosy being a starter. When he was drafted, the scouts said he’d move fast through the system as a reliever. He and Schwim were the guys drafted to do that. There was talk during last year’s ST that Rosy could get a bullpen spot or be the first guy called up. Then he got hurt and lost almost the whole year (2010). Now they think he might be a starter? I guess with Bastardo, Herndon, Stutes, Schwim, DeFratus, Zagurski and somebody I probably forgot, someone should be tried as a starter.

I read somewhere that Dubee told Ramirez to pitch to contact. He has gotten a decent number of strikeouts before in his career. I think the drop in strikeouts is a result of Dubee’s advice rather than some deficiency on Ramirez’s part.

thanks, someone else finally gets it. same for Cosart

Whatever happened to Morgano and Garner?
It seems likely that Biddle will develop slowly over the season at Lkwd and by the season’s end will have continue to rise among the prospects.
“Bucky” Buchanan seems to get them out without striking them out, so far…but how will that tendency play out at Clwtr?
P.S. Who has info on that SS playing at Lkwd, Duran? His offensive numbers look really good.

You mean Morgado- injured. Percival Garner is still in XST.
Duran comes from Valencia, Venezuela- same as Cesar Hernandez, just a little younger. Took over for Hernandez at SS in VST when he signed. The previous season Hernandez had around 2 assists per game, Duran the next season played 6 more games than Hernandez had the year before , but had 41 more assists.

Ramirez seemed to have a little sharper break on his curve ball today which resulted in a few more strike outs. Overall he was sharp going eight innings only to give up a Reading Special home run to left in the eight that resulted in the 3-2 loss for him. The ball, a high pop, got up in the wind and just cleared the left field wall. Freddy Glavis remains an enigma. Saturday night he hits a homer and a triple. This afternoon the strikes out three straight times. Because of his inconsistency still don’t see him yet as an every day major league short stop. Derrick Mitchell who got off to a great start hitting with runners in scoring position earlier in the season has struggled recently with base runners and today was no exception. They need him to generate some RBIs from the lower half of the lineup.

I think Morgado and Garner will play at Williamsport, which starts in June.
