An area that probably deserves a bit more discussion is the back end of the bullpen. Have at it. Continue reading Daily Discussion

Clearwater Threshers Review
It’s been a couple of weeks since we took a look at the Clearwater Threshers, and for that I appologize. I was out of town on business, almost immediately followed by being out of town another week for a funeral, so I haven’t had a lot of time to dedicate to baseball lately. This week’s report won’t be a comprehensive as I normally like to be, but I did want to get something up, so here we go.
The Clearwater team continues to hold onto second place in the Florida State League, after leading their division for most of the month of April. The team is now going into an off day on Wednesday after a six game road trip, including a sweep of the first place Brevard County Manatees (Brewers) to pick up some much needed ground as they look to regain first place.

Just a few quick notes to get the day started:
In Lehigh Valley, Justin Lehr was named the International League Pitcher of the Week (5/10–5/10) for the second time this year, while in Reading Vance Worley was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the same time period.
In Clearwater last night, Kyle Drabek had another solid outing in CLearwater’s extra inning win, going 5 innings and allowing one run. He did not get a decision. Dominic Brown has been on fire as well, hitting above .325, with a 6RBI game over the weekend.
In Lakewood, Anthony Gose stole his 19th base of the very young season last night. Impressive.
Relief Pitcher Matt German, who has been outstanding this year for Reading, was placed on the DL with a strained oblique muscle.
Lehigh Valley Weekend Game Report
5/08/09– After an eight plus hour bus trip into the early hours of the morning, the ‘Pigs jumped out early on Toledo with a RBI single by Mike Cervenak in the first and a two run double in the second by Jason Ellison to take an early 3-0 lead over the Mudhens. That is when the homerun ball came back to haunt Drew Carpenter once again, who, after leaving in the sixth had given up two more homers, accounting for a 4-3 Toledo lead. Carpenters’ line was 6IP 3H 4ER 4BB 6K. Toledo took that lead into the ninth when the ‘Pigs scored two on an RBI double by Rich Thompson and a bases loaded walk by Andy Tracy gave the ‘Pigs the 5-4 win. Mike Koplove threw two strong innings to get the win, with Pablo Ozuna, Rich Thompson and Jason Ellison contributing multi hit games. Continue reading Lehigh Valley Weekend Game Report
Reading Phillies Weekly Report (5/04 – 5/10)
It was yet another good week for the Phils as Reading went 4-2 on the week and now sit at 17-10, good for 3rd in the entire Eastern League. A pattern emerged this week as the Phils continually rode good pitching and good enough hitting to their 4 victories. The offense was without Taylor for most of the week, so that may have been the final blow to an already lackluster bunch. Oh well, the pitching prospects shined and with the Philadelphia Phillies struggling with run prevention, this group has got to bring a smile to your face when you think of the future. The game recaps and prospect highlights are after the break. Enjoy.

Double-Teamed: Love from BA and BP
First off, apologies for having not cranked out A Closer Look piece in a little bit, though big thanks to governator for his interesting piece on Matt German in the meantime. Not sure if I’ll have a chance to write anything before I head on vacation this weekend, but I’ll definitely be back at it when I get back.
In the meantime, the system got some pub from both BA and BP today. Check below the jump for the goods.
Rough Day
Already for the Phillies Minor League affliliates with losses in both Lakewood and CLearwater. Kyle Drabek did pitch well, however, going 6.1 innings and giving up only one earned run on six hits. He walked one and struck out nine.
This evening, Antonio Bastardo on the hill in Reading, with Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco pitching in Allentown, in their doubleheader.
