Threshers; June 8, 2014

We’ve all heard the term “a heartbreaking loss”. Well, if there is such a thing as a “heartbreaking win”, the Threshers put their fans through one this afternoon. Actually, heart wrenching or gut wrenching are probably better descriptive terms

The Threshers hitters were facing a young hurler making his Florida State League debut for the Daytona Cubs. Right hander, Justin Amlung, was 4-0 with an ERA of 1.54 with Kane County in A ball. It seems that most of the games I cover, the Threshers run into guys with sub 3.00 ERAs who shut them down, or plus 4.00 ERAs who pitch their game of the season. Not today. Threshers; June 3, 2014

There were a few more roster moves before tonight’s game.

  • Herlis Rodriguez assigned to XST.
  • Justin Parr assigned to Clearwater from XST.
  • Shawn Camp promoted to Lehigh Valley.
  • Pete Lavin promoted to Reading.
  • Anthony Hewitt assigned to Clearwater from Reading.

I don’t know what is normal for an affiliate, but the Threshers have 86 transactions.  By comparison, the Bradenton Marauders pre-game fact sheet lists 25 as of June 1st.  So, 86 seems a little high to me.  And there should be more in the next couple weeks if signed draft picks are assigned, if anyone is promoted from Lakewood, if anymore are demoted from Reading, and if anyone is released to make room for signed draft picks. Threshers; May 31, 2014

Tonight, over 5,000 people were treated to an old fashioned pitchers’ duel. Left-handed Orlando Castro of the Bradenton Marauders held the Threshers to 3 hits and 1 run in his 6 innings. He was bested by Miguel Nunez who allowed 3 hits in 6 scoreless innings. The Bullpens matched goose eggs and the Threshers made a first inning run by Roman Quinn hold up. Threshers; May 28, 2014

The Threshers rebounded this afternoon with a gutty 5-4, 11 inning win over the Fort Myers Miracle. For 8 innings, it looked like another 4-hit loss with a decent outing by starter Colin Kleven. But the team staged a two-out rally in the 9th inning to tie the game and eventually won the game in the 11 innings.

Kleven was greeted in the first inning by a Jorge Polanco triple on the second pitch of the game. The Twins #8 prospect scored on a single by the next batter. Kleven responded by retiring the next 3 batters, one via his first of five strike outs. He continued pitching well over the next 3 innings, facing the minimum, allowing 1 hit and recording 2 more strike outs. Kleven pitched into trouble in the 5th inning when he hit a batter after recording his 4th strike out. The Miracle executed a hit-and-run and scored the runner with out a throw on a double. Afterward, his only walk of the game, a sac fly, and his 5th strike out ended the 29-pitch inning. Kleven responded with a tidy 9 pitch 6th inning to close out his afternoon with the following line – Continue reading Threshers; May 28, 2014

Miguel Gonzalez Begins Rehab with Threshers

Miguel Gonzalez was activated today and began his Major League Rehab Assignment.  He started for the Threshers and was less than impressive.  I went down to the bullpen to watch his pre-game warmups.  It wasn’t pretty.  He was consistently high with most of his pitches.  At one point, the pitching coach (Bob Milacki, I think) stopped him to pantomine a delivery and release.  A few pitches later, Gonzalez launched a wild pitch that Logan Moore could barely get leather on.  The ball rattled around in the walkway and eventually rolled through the open door into left field.

When the game started, Gonzalez’ control problems continued.  Continue reading Miguel Gonzalez Begins Rehab with Threshers

Threshers; May 12, 2014

The Threshers hosted the Jupiter Hammerheads tonight.  Colin Kleven got the start and pitched well.  Even though he was roughed up for 3 runs in the 1st inning, he was in command of his pitches.  He threw 27 pitches in the first, but 20 were strikes, and 6 of the 7 batters were faced with first pitch strikes.  Kleven settled down and pitched 6 more solid, scoreless innings.
